E. coli outbreak in U.K. 2 dead.
Two die from E. coli outbreak linked to salad.

Two people have died after becoming infected with E. coli following an outbreak of the bug in England.

Public Health England (PHE) has said the disease, which has infected 151 people in Britain, may be linked to eating mixed salad leaves.

The health body is investigating whether rocket imported from the Mediterranean has caused the outbreak of E. coli o157.

PHE did not reveal where the two people died but said there have been 144 cases in England, mainly in the south west, six in Wales and one in Scotland.

Testing of samples from those who had fallen ill also indicated the strain of E coli 0157 was likely to have been imported, possibly from the Mediterranean.

Outbreaks of E coli 0157 poisoning are relatively rare compared with other food poisoning diseases. The bacterium is found in the gut of many animals, particularly cattle, and can contaminate food and water.
