50ft deep 'sinkhole' forces closure of all train lines between East Croydon and London Bridge
All train lines between London Bridge and East Croydon are blocked due to an enormous hole in the Forest Hill area.

A spokesman for Network Rail has told the Crawley News it is 50 feet (15 metres) deep and six feet wide and is expected to cause significant disruption.

There is some dispute over whether or not it is technically a sinkhole. Network Rail reportedly called it that at first but have since reclassified it as a hole.

Thank God for Network Rail ,someone mighta fell down that not knowing its a hole ....

If that pic in the article is the pic of the hole, looks more like 2 feet wide, doesn't it?

Why close the lines? Is the 'hole' right under the track? If it's just a hole, and not a sinkhole, it's not going to grow. And I doubt it's under the track directly.

Sink holes are not from crust displacement.

Sink holes come from harvesting gases in the pockets.

It's just Thames water failing to maintain their Victorian water pipes for a change. Doesn't stop them putting up the bills though. "Under the custody of Thames Water, London's water mains leak at least a quarter of its water" [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)]
