Today I was scammed and my bank account emptied.

oh I am sorry, but I would never even give bank info to a friend like that

I was confused if it was a Message through facebook messenger or a text

Unknown to me, the code was a code that reset my online banking details for that account. The reason I don't use the account was because I prefer to do my banking in branch.

I received a message on my phone from my friend, asking if she could have a payment put into my account from something she had sold on ebay. She had told me earlier in the day (via email as I was working away from the building at that time) that her phone had been taken and her social media had been hacked. She was worried about her banking app being broken into.

Anyway I got a message from her saying she had sold something but because her bank account had been closed, could she ask the buyer to send the money into my account, and I give her the cash when we are next in work.

I said yes, and she asked for the account number and sort code - which is usual if someone is paying into your account.

She said because her bank account had been hacked, I will be phoned by paypal or her bank, an automated phonecard with a 4 digit code that authorises the account to receive the money will be given to me.

I gave her the details of a bank account that I hardly use (as mentioned before it only had a small amount of money in it) as I don't like doing things online - I much prefer face to face.

This person was doing a very good job of impersonating my friend, even down to the phrases used and business things we had discussed earlier that day via email.

I got suspicious when the person started to get really aggressive as the account wasn't an account that had my wages paid into it.
They actually said "That isn't your real account..I need the details of the account that your wages go into. "

My first thought was - the cheeky cow, I am trying to help her out here. Then it changed to why does she need an account where my wages are paid into? Then I thought the whole thing was really not sounding right.
I ended the messaging and phoned my husband who came to help me out.

I got my husband to go into my phone and change my online banking password, and lo and behold it was the same kind of phonecall I had recieved earlier on

I changed the passwords to sonething very complicated and went into the nearest branch of my bank, told the woman what had gone on and that I had changed my passwords and do I need to do anything else. She said that would be sufficient

I have in the last few hours found out that the whole account has been blocked by the fraud dept of my bank as someone had applied for a large loan on the account. Just before the loan application they had transferred money out of my account.

Hard earned money gone in a sec. SHIT. CALL THE COPS!

I am registered blind, so doing everything via voice or voice activated messaging is the only way I can communicate if not face to face.

As I mentioned in my original post, there wasn't much money in it as it was a spare account.

I don't see how your problem could be much different in the solution.

Your story doesn't add up. What made you think you needed a code from someone you barely knew to have money put in YOUR account by a third party, because of something that happened to THEIR account? Where did they get this magical code from? What did you do with it? What exactly did it reset on your internet banking? Why did "resetting" your online banking details give a stranger access to your internet banking? Who do you bank with?

Is this a test for GLP to see if we're gullible?

In the UK you use different details for paying in and cashing out so problems like this can't happen.

The only way they could take money out is with your PIN number or the code on the back of your bank card.

If you gave them either of those then it's your fault.

I am furious.

My friend had her Facebook account hacked, and the scammer had contacted all the people on her friends list and then blocked them.

I only use Facebook for our business page.

I received a message from my friend, saying her mobile had been stolen and the thieves had gotten into her bank account, email and social media through the apps, and that she was having to use her laptop to contact me.

She said she had sold something online but because the bank had closed her account due to the hacking, could she have the money sent to my bank account until I see her at work the next day? (I was only expecting it to be a tenner or something -after all we are quite new friends and surely no one would trust a new friend with a large amount of money)
Yes, it seems stupid now.

I am so angry at myself because I am usually a very vigilant person and always wary of scams and generally very suspicious of people - but the conversation was so convincing....even carrying on conversations we had had earlier and asking for my date of birth for that work registration thingy" (that we had actually been discussing earlier that day via message)

I started to get suspicious when the person started to get angry at me because the bank details I had given was for an account I hardly use - it only had a small amount of money in it at the time, luckily.

I changed my online banking details and went into my bank branch, told them what had happened and that I had changed my log in details, and would that be sufficient? The woman at the counter said yes it would.

I now discover that my account has been emptied, my access to the account has been suspended.

I'm going back into my bank tomorrow to see what can be done about it.

I just wanted to vent and let off steam.

I DON'T use Facebook.

I have access to the business Facebook page but have never posted on it . It is too difficult for me to navigate as it doesn't work well with the speech program I use.

The messages were direct to my personal phone and read out to me by my speech programme.
