Rifles don't kick like a shotgun. Not even close. Rifles have little recoil if chambered in a smaller round like .22 or .223/5.56. Can get more recoil when in .308 or 30-06. Stay with a .22 or .223/5.56

.223 is a good choice for smaller people like women and teens. I'd trust the effectiveness out to 300 yards.

if you believe your target will be further,
then 308 is best bet but takes more training,
and get a heavier weapon, I prefer HK-91 or FN-FAL
they weigh around 10-12 lbs.

forget the mini-14, mags are way too pricey and hard to get from ruger.

there are litterally billions of AR 15 mags out there already as well as every other parts for the AR.

The AR had been perfected over the past 60 years and that is the main reason it is the choice of NATO and millions of Americans today.

I want a rifle. for a girl.

any suggestions?
what are the advantages, disadvantages?
 Quoting: nikki nikita

Find a range. Many will allow you to rent a firearm and will help you with familiarization on safety, loading, etc.

Guns are not one size fits all. What works for GLP posters may not work for you. That is why it is best you actually get some hands on at a range with a weapon before you buy one. For example, my wife likes her 9mm. I like my 44 black powder pistol-don't laugh, most self defense situations don't require more than 6 shots and I can shoot it faster than a semi auto pistol can cycle.

Anyway, OP, find a range and try a few out before you run out and buy.

Re: guns? best gun to buy?
AR15's are perfect for females. Compared to other rifles, the AR15 can be smaller and lighter with less recoil and easier magazine handling.

Advantages found in other rifles? Stopping power, cheaper ammo and reliability, but those shouldn't be of worry with the right AR15..

-Reliability is great if you stay away from bottom barrel parts and cheap ammo.
-Great ammo can be found for $300/1000 rounds.
-Stopping power is more than acceptable; youtube 5.56 wounds if you'd like to be convinced.

Unless you're a strong/athletic women, I'd stay away from anything more, including shotguns. Start by purchasing a lower receiver from a gun store and then work on buying the rest of your parts on the web. It's easier than you think.

Why build instead of complete purchase? A built rifle will be much lighter and satisfy your functioning preferences. For instance, you can purchase a shorter barrel (lighter, quicker) and a thinner grip and rail for female hands.

It will be necessary for you to know how to take apart and fix/clean your firearm, so building it from the lower receiver up isn't far fetched. In fact, a great many AR15 owners have done just that.

Re: guns? best gun to buy?
Ruger mini 14 is my personal preference. I guess everyone loves the black AR though. They are pretty nice.

Its too bad that 22-250 eats barrels for lunch because id love to have an AR chambered in toofitty.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 957862

Need a .476" boltface to shoot .22-250; that requires an AR-10. Lots more money and weight... Am not much on varmint guns with light bullets. Really want a 4000fps 50gr shooter? Not a whole lot of even intermediate range accuracy there; least not over 200yds...

6mm XC, 6.5mm Grendel will work in AR-15 bolt carrier, but must have the 7.62x39 bolt. Grendel is The Ticket. Got the heavier bullet weights and super high ballistic coefficiency.

Ar-15 is a great rifle.
What matters is the barrel twist rate and bullet selection.
1:8 or 1:7 twist allows heavy match bullets which are good out past 500yds.

Even a 16" Colt barrel with 1:7 twist will deliver the precision. Chrome-lined barrel and chamber will be longer lived, especially if you go "mad minute" blasting mode.

Gonna buy an AR? Get plenty of magazines and a decent sight. If you really want to learn to shoot, the A-2 style with carry handle receiver is capable of superb accuracy. Talking from a decent manufacturer, not an el-cheapo blaster. Colt, Rock River, Armalite, old Bushmaster, Olympic, Sabre; then there are hoity-toity boutique makers like LMT and Noveske/Wilson/Knight's...

Smart move is to buy gun at same time you get your ammo.
The cheap US generic stuff is good and yields reloadable brass empties. 62gr green tip surplus stuff is good, but for real effect and versatility, the 68/69 & 75/77 grain match bullets will hit harder and deliver 500 plus yard accuracy. Expensive to buy at $30/20, but cheap to handload using best components.

Gonna own a rifle you want to depend on?
Learn to handload and make your own ammo.

The .223/5.56mm will kill deer and larger animals if you use heavy bullets and place your shot well. The Nosler and Barnes specialty bullets will enable much more game taking performance than you might imagine.

Gonna shoot small game? Get a 1000fps .177 pellet gun and a bunch of quality pellets.

Don't go with this. I have had a Soviet and a Norinco for quite awhile and have been wanting a Yugo to round out the collection. I finally got one...and as much as I love the SKS platform, I totally despise this make. The grenade launcher is simply a novelty to the civilian user and it makes the front way too heavy. I have some pretty crazy stuff, but the Yugo is the hardest of them all to hold steady on target. By far, it is my least favorite out of my collection.

Are you crazy? Blackpowder revolver faster than a pistol? Lotta smoke, obscure your vision and aim... Blasting ain't same as hitting...

Try a .44 Schofield light load in an S&W model 29 if you want "fast". 200gr flatpoint bullet. But... that ain't for defense, much less offensive fighting use.

target loads in a .45acp match gun will make your head spin with the speed and accuracy they deliver; plus No Smoke!

Nothing like a S&W J frame 5shot .38special for concealment and speed; if you are moved for a hideout revolver.

While on topic of "speed", I've fired an A-2 sighted AR-15 at 200yds in match conditions, 10rds in 7sec and kept all rounds under 2". Light recoiling AR is a masterpiece for precision. A 77gr match bullet at 500yds delivers more energy than a .357mag 158gr at 25yds. Big energy delivery and fast precision is a great combination...

Re: guns? best gun to buy?
I am sure I'll get a lot of backlash over this, but I would not hesitate a moment to recommend the Hi-Point .45 Carbine. I bought one on a whim awhile back and am actually very pleased with performance, the forethought on some of the features, pricing and availability. I've fired more round through it than either my ARs (or any other rifle recently for that matter) and have not had one issue. Being American made and lifetime warranty is just icing on the cake.

[link to www.hi-pointfirearms.com]

Their handguns are pretty heavy and I don't care for them as much, but I have yet to see an issue with their carbines.
