Tropical Storm Colin slams Florida (1000s without Power)

I heard it was going to be nothing more than 50 mph winds - a crap load of rain. But 1000's without power? WTH?

I know. My Aunt lives in Tampa Bay and is in the hospital, ATM. Not because of this storm, other issues.

Meh. State of Emergency over a tropical storm?

Wait until a bigger one comes along then millions will be without power. I swear this country is becoming a bunch of pussies. They wouldn't know what in the hell to do if a big 4 or 5 hit.

Tropical Storm Colin lashes parts of Florida, Georgia

MIAMI -- The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Colin brought rain and high winds to northern Florida as it made landfall very late Monday and very early Tuesday.

It says the center of the storm was about 110 miles northeast of Jacksonville early Tuesday, moving northeast at about 31 mph, into the Atlantic east of Georgia.

cloudy all day in Key West - we got hit by a TS wave about 2pm that lasted for about 3 hours - it was pretty solid so I am sure this little guy hit pretty good up North

I live in Jacksonville, FL. I can tell you that it got pretty windy and the rain came down really hard, but it was no more than our normal summer storms. The biggest difference is the amount of water and the length of time it took to blow through. The reason people are without power is just wind. It doesn't take hurricane force wind to blow down some trees into transformers.

All in all, it wasn't that bad. It just woke me up a couple times. Our garden and lawn finally got some decent rain and the wind blew down all the old weak branches. These types of minor storms are actually beneficial for us. They keep our trees strong.

simple question: why does the power go out so easily?

simple answer: lightning strikes on transformers on telephone poles.

What does that mean in practical terms? Or is it just a statement? Do they build flood defences? Do they mobilise the army to the places where sandbags are going to be needed? Or does it just mean 'sit and wait'? These states are declared so quickly and readily they really have no credence, do they? Has this governor prepared a new budget accordingly and forecast the damage from the storm so that people can get last minute insurance? No. He just says 'it could be bad' and then stands at the window.

Pointless state, pointless state.

It's been rain and wind here in Navarre for the last three days, didn't even know it was a named storm until this morning.

Most of Central and South Florida is full of East coast transplants and they're a bunch of sissies.

Up in the Redneck Riviera we don't even notice Sally Storms.

My hubs and I just moved away from Florida to be closer to family a couple or so months ago.

I had a very odd feeling about parts of FL right before we left but...I get goosies at the most idiotic stuff so, meh.

Sick w/stomach bug. Will check in here and there.

We got a shit ton of rain in SC from it! It is sunny again today, so it was a needed event for food and medical.....

We lost sattelites in Michigan, also cold and cloudy too.
