I am wondering if zika sticks around in the body like some other viruses do -- like herpes & chicken pox?

Could, for instance, a 13 year old girl pick up zika, maybe a mild case and does not even realize it is zika. Fast forward, she is 26 years old and decides to have her first baby. Is the virus still present? Could it damage her baby all those years later? That is even before we get into the issue of this thing being sexually transmitted.

Our family will be vacationing in the tropics this summer. I plan to be very insistent on my daughters wearing skeeter repellent with deet -- we usually wear Avon Skin So Soft to deter bugs, gonna go more hardcore this year. Not worth the risk until we know more about this virus.

what's scary is that the mutations of this virus are unprecedented. as the symptoms unfold they are more complex.

so now an adult gets Gillian Barre', which causes paralysis. babies not only have microcephaly but now skulls are like jelly.

I agree, this seems like the virus lays dormant and is connected to the nervous system like herpes, chickenpox and can resurface until humans build up immunity which takes 100 years.

zika is even transmitted through breastmilk.

and since it's sexually transmitted, it's forever now.

my daughter is 26 and wanting to get pregnant. these are scary times.

Time will tell.

Viruses with less morbidity/mortality than Zika, herpes, varicella stick around in us for our lifetime.

An example is the Coxsackie virus that can cause Hand, Foot and Mouth or Herpangina.

Studies show that children in remote areas such as the Arctic, who are not exposed to other children, can develop these illnesses. The theory is that their parents shed the virus and expose their own children.

Hope Zika is not able to do this. It would be a horrible way to depopulate the world and a terrible burden on the parents caring for these devastated infants/children.

I suggest that these designer viruses have built in genetic codes, markers to protect certain populations.
