The experiments were able to measure the cerebral spinal fluid. I am reading a biography of Tesla and he used to have hallucinations so real that he had to have his brother tell him if that image was real or not.Later in the inventive time of his life he could hallucinate the machine he was inventing and it would work like a real one. This allowed him to test the machine he was inventing before making a material one. He only slept about 3 hrs per night. Interesting man. |

Ran seven wrecks, three shootings, a full code, about a half dozen nursing home runs, a few medicals, and a snake bite. Yes, a snake bite! I worked two jobs, one with 12 hour shifts the other with 24s. I was psychotic by then end of it all. I mean loony. |

Quoting: YanceyDoodleDandy Your brain does weird things when it goes too long without sleep. I remember friends regaling me with military tales of hallucinations from sleep deprivation training. Stories of talking to people who aren't there, dreams merging into reality, and pink elephants. [link to bigthink.com] When you click the above link, there is also a video "This is Your Brain on No Sleep" I once stayed up for 3 days writing a econ research paper. At the end, the walls started to melt and my brain started to drift of onto really odd tangents. Then I think I started having afib due to too much dexedrine, nicotine and coffee... I thought I wouldn't wake up ever again. Last time I did that. Now can you imagine what meth heads go through?! GEEEEEZ, you saw the matrix melting! So far, I'm only experiencing a slight sideways feeling. Nothing major but I am a light weight. Only 28 hours but I'll probably be seeing Elvis soon. Or, quite literally, stare down a hole into the wall. Yes, I can imagine it because I've seen pictures. It's scary. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 42067050 Malaysia 05/09/2016 02:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was doing a project and didn't sleep for more than 48 hours. When the work was done, I decided to go to sleep and take my bath. While showering, I had a shock of my life when I saw something on my breasts. At first I thought they were maggots or some sort of caterpillars. I immediately shook them off my breasts and seriously, almost had a heart attack. After a few seconds, I realized it was still there. I looked closer and to my surprise, they were not maggots or caterpillars, but the arteries beneath my skin. What the fuck? I was able to see MY OWN ARTERIES as if my eyes were some sort of X-ray machine. As if I was able to see through and I kid you not, that scared the hell out of me. Enough to end my shower as quickly as I can and got the hell out of the bathroom and went to sleep, trying not to think what I just saw. Until now, I still don't know what happened that night. But I sure do NOT want to experience the same thing again. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 71964057 United States 05/09/2016 02:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As an aside, but still VERY relative: What are the benefits of not sleeping for an extended amount of time? Quoting: YanceyDoodleDandy All I see is how bad it is but, having learned a couple or so things about this life, there are two sides to a coin. Hmmmm...I think I'll try to find the answer from a few sources and post any interesting findings here. As someone who's a bit bipolar, I've struggled a lot with sleep (having stayed awake past 24 hours many times), I can confirm that there is a deep spiritual benefit. The effects sleep deprivation has on the brain are very similar to that of LSD and DMT. In fact, when deprived of sleep long enough, the brain will manufacture more DMT than normal in an attempt to compensate, basically causing the person to have a waking dream. A lot can be learned while in this transcendental state, but it can also be very dangerous to the individual experiencing it (think bad trips on acid) for their perception of reality can be so altered that they unknowingly put themselves in dangerous situations (thinking you can fly, jumping off a building, etc.) |

And the last time I lost this much sleep, I was very young. I had to work the next day and fell asleep on my feet, at times. That was HORRIBLE! Too funny. I've stayed awake for 3 days. and the same damn thing happened to me. was literally falling asleep standing at my machine due to not working fast enough lol. I used to hang out with a guy exactly 1 year younger than me (same birthday). Aside from me he was the only guy I knew ever that could outlast me in staying awake (he's done 5 days, I've done 4) |

It seems that the longer you remain awake, the more active the pineal gland/third eye becomes. I had an experience where I could see my hands moving in front of me, with my eyes closed, in a pitch black room. Also, light was much more vivid in detail and color, almost like I was experiencing an extra dimension to it or something. |

When I go to bed I'm excited to see what's happening on "the other side." I have a house, friends, problems, joys. It's not like dreaming: IT IS LIVING LIFE. What do you think is going on there? I look forward to sleep all the time and love my sleep life so much, it's such a rich experience. I learn a lot of things over there too and can use them here. I also sometimes can "touch" the other side when I am very tired. It's like smelling familiar home made cooking. But I can't quite slip over there while conscious and awake in this world. It has to be one or the other. |

User ID: 72130907 United States 05/09/2016 04:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When I was young & stupid one of my hobbies was experimenting with drugs. I had been reading Stephen Kings Insomnia and decided to see if I could replicate the experence by staying awake on meth as long as I could. Id lost count of the days after a week and my wife and friends told me Id gone as long as 16 days. During the days Id worked like a mad man doing impossable amounts of work & at night I would see the shadow people following me, watching around corners & and whispering in my ear secrets and conspiracies when I stopped moving. I knew at first I was hallucinating but as the days went on & on I wasn't completely sure they weren't real and the people around me weren't the hallucination. Today all those people are gone from my life, gone their seperate ways. But sometimes out of the corner of my eye I can still see the shadow people watching me, waiting for me to sleep so they can whisper in my ear again Reality leaves a lot to the imagination... Got to bed at 9am, get up around 2pm everyday then nap for 2 hours in the evening and back to normal sleeping hours fri/sat night. On weeks we get slammed with ten hour shifts I don't get the evening nap. Results? Last week I took my breakfast to the bathroom and was eating it while I was taking a dump on the toilet waiting for the epson salt bath to fillup. Moments later I awoke when I dropped my brkfst on the floor and the tub was overflowing several feet from the tub. Conclusion: there's now way getting out of sleep you're a machine and need your batteries recharged just all there is to it. |
