Hell, the place is loaded with contaminated soil bags and hastily constructed water tanks full of radioactive waste.

A moderate wave would warrant my attention at this point.

I believe this. I routinely post breaking news here on GLP, and it often happens that the original source of the breaking news will update the information as it becomes available, thus changing the original information from before.

This is the nature of the way breaking news works. Information changes as it becomes more available, and news websites will update their original information to reflect new data that they receive.

I believe the OP is telling the truth that the information originally said 6.6 at the beginning, but it was changed when more information came in.

This happens with the news sources all the time.

On the USGS website it has at 5.8

Just upgraded it to a 5.8

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 has struck off north eastern Japan, the US Geological survey has said.

The quake was centered around 60 miles south east of Sendai, Honshu, near where a devastating quake and tsunami struck in March 2011.
