Cognitive Dissonance and the Human Mind
Remember Robbie the Robot?

When "Robbie" the robot was told to shoot a weapon at a man in the movie Forbidden Planet, his electronic brain sparked and short-circuited. His creator had programmed him to never harm a human and so the conflicting ideas paralyzed him.

Human beings often are presented with opposing thoughts also, but our brains have developed a way of resolving these conflicts through a process call cognitive dissonance.

We are taught, like "Robbie," that killing is prohibited -- but what about war? And many anti-abortionists support the death penalty... conflicting behavior is all around us. So how exactly does that work?

What is Cognitive Dissonance?

Simply put, congitive dissonance theory states that when you have two opposing ideas (or ideologies) at the same time, you will act upon the one that causes the less distortion to your ego.

According to Wikipedia:
Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The "ideas" or "cognitions" in question may include attitudes and beliefs, and also the awareness of one's behavior.

The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, or by justifying or rationalizing their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Cognitive dissonance theory is one of the most influential and extensively studied theories in social psychology.

Dissonance normally occurs when a person perceives a logical inconsistency among his or her cognitions. This happens when one idea implies the opposite of another. For example, a belief in animal rights could be interpreted as inconsistent with eating meat or wearing fur. Noticing the contradiction would lead to dissonance, which could be experienced as anxiety, guilt, shame, anger, embarrassment, stress, and other negative emotional states.

When people's ideas are consistent with each other, they are in a state of harmony or consonance. If cognitions are unrelated, they are categorized as irrelevant to each other and do not lead to dissonance.

I am anti-abortion because the babies are innocent of any wrong doing and their lives should be protected.

I am a death penalty proponant because they have committed very serious crimes and shouldn't be allowed to continue their lives.

That doesn't cause me cognitive dissonance because it is a guilt/innocence thing.

Re: Cognitive Dissonance and the Human Mind
In war, the rule against killing people is subverted by dehumanization of the opponent. To be effective, the soldier has to believe those he kills are less-than-human. This is what makes 'subhuman' propaganda such a dangerous and filthy mentality to spread.

Abortion has the same idea - dehumanization. Whether or not you believe it is acceptable to kill a human fetus depends upon whether or not you regard that fetus as human. In the case of the death penalty, I suppose you could say that some do not regard murderers as subject to the same protections as non-murderers - that they are , again, less-than-human.

And yes, the process of dehumanization is indeed a facet of cognitive dissonance.

Anti abortionists are in FAVOR of murder-they sat on their asses with their dicks in their mouths as Bush murdered thousands of our troops by lying to them-as well as the murder of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

To me that is so hypocritical, that i consider them 'fair game' when at a rally or if you catch one alone.

Have at 'em, boys!

I certainly believe this is a rampant phenomenon in our current society. I think a key aspect of its implementation is keeping the ego in a very fragile, insecure state.
A high amount of cd in a concentrated area can also breed a separate but related dissonance. Please watch your step and don't trip over the numerous manifestations on this site.

To expand a bit on my above comment, people are purposely lead into states of dissonance through controlled conflicting information to implement/progress certain agendas.

If you care so much about innocence how about all the innocent lives ended by the death penalty and a system that convicts them. I am against all killing especially by the government. How can you live in a society that says killing is wrong but its ok for the government to do it. How do you live with yourself when a wrongly convicted innocent person is put to death. It has happened many times and will happen many times more. Just when does a soul enter a baby anyway.\>
