China is currently engaged in a large-scale buildup of nuclear forces and missile delivery systems that include new missiles and a hypersonic glide vehicle—a weapon that can maneuver to avoid missile defenses in delivering nuclear or conventional warheads.

“There will initially be two types of DF-41s, a road and rail mobile version, indicating the PLA could be fielding several brigades of this ICBM,”

“In addition, there may be a new MIRV equipped version of the older DF-31, called the DF-31B.”

China also is expected to add multiple warheads to its new submarine-launched missile, called JL-2C or JL-3.

“The DF-41 program appears to be in the advanced stage of research and development,” said Mark Stokes, a former Pentagon specialist on the Chinese military.

The US has expressed concern over the rising militarisation of the South China Sea after China landed a defence aircraft on one of its artificial islands in the disputed region
China has grown increasingly assertive on maritime territorial disputes with South East Asian nations in recent years, with the country claiming most of the South and East China seas as part of its sovereign territory.

Beijing has built several artificial islands in the midst of a reef system in the South China Sea known as the Spratly Islands – increasing tension with Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei, who all have overlapping claims on the territory.

It is also involved in a separate dispute with Japan over a group of eight uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

China tests ICBM capable of striking US within half an hour

Beijing has successfully tested a new long-range ballistic missile capable of engaging any potential target worldwide. The rocket takes just 30 minutes to cover its maximum 12,000km range and can deliver multiple strikes on any nuclear-capable state.
The launch of China’s Dongfeng-41 (East Wind, DF-41) missile was registered by the US satellite tracking system in real time, the Washington Free Beacon reports, although the location of the launch was not immediately revealed. The launch was made from a new road-mobile platform, and is reportedly the seventh test-firing of the DF-41.

China Confirms Multiple-Warhead Missile Test in South China Sea
China’s Defense Ministry on Thursday confirmed that Beijing fired its newest long-range missile in a test this week into the South China Sea, amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing. The DF-41 test was closely monitored by U.S. intelligence satellites, and other sensors and came amid growing tensions with the United States over disputed islands in the South China Sea. The new missile will be equipped with between six and 10 MIRVs, representing a major increasing in China’s nuclear arsenal. The missile has an estimated range of up to 7,456 miles.

Until it began MIRVing its strategic missiles, China was estimated to have around 250 to 300 strategic warheads, many of them very large yield “city-busters.”
The nuclear buildup by China has raised concerns that China is developing a first strike capability using large numbers of mobile missiles with multiple warheads.
