The Curious Case of Ted Cruz and Jose Medellin
Why did George W. Bush endorse David Dewhurst instead of Ted Cruz for the vacant Kay Bailey Hutchinson Senate Seat...

Why? Cruz, as a long time Texas Republican, worked on George W. Bush's Presidential Campaign, was even a hired attorney in the Florida debacle, but still the Bush's were always sour on Cruz...

Here's why...

In 2003, Jose Ernesto Medellin was on death row for his subhuman crimes a decade earlier: the rape and murder of two young girls, ages 14 and 16. Medellin was an illegal immigrant and sought to have his execution stayed, claiming that during his trial he was not notified of an international law through which he could have obtained legal aid from the Mexican consulate. Mexico then sued the United States on behalf of Medellin and 50 other illegal immigrants that were incarcerated in the U.S. for crimes they committed on US soil, citing the same loophole.

District and appellate courts threw out Medellin’s requests, but the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case. Before the case could be argued, however, the Bush administration stepped in.

Bush took the position that as president, he had the authority under the Constitution to order states to review the convictions and sentences of foreign nationals in order to advise them of their rights according to international law.

Prompted by the Bush memorandum, Medellin re-filed in Texas state court. Who was the state's solicitor general? Ted Cruz.

After the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed Medellin’s second appeal, the Supreme Court once again said they would take up the case. Ted Cruz argued the case before the Supreme Court in what was a quite contentious back and forth, recounted below from a summer 2014 issue of the New Yorker:

He (Cruz) argued that the President could not order Texas to reopen the cases without the specific authorization of Congress. Cruz duelled with Stephen Breyer and other skeptical Justices for well over the allotted thirty minutes. Breyer ribbed Cruz: “As I read the Constitution, it says all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States shall be the supreme law of the land, and the judges in every state—I guess it means including Texas”—the audience laughed—“shall be bound thereby.”

“Certainly, Justice Breyer,” Cruz answered. “Texas, of course, does not dispute that the Constitution, laws, and treaties are the supreme law of the land.” But, he went on, the President’s order, in this case, was none of these. The questioning of Cruz became so raucous that, at one point, Justice John Paul Stevens felt compelled to interject, “You said there are six reasons. . . . I really would like to hear what those reasons are without interruption from all of my colleagues.” Cruz won the case, six-to-three, with Stevens joining the Court’s conservatives.

Jose Medellin, illegal alien, rapist, and murder, was put to death in Huntsville, Texas in August 2008, despite a "stay of execution" from the World Court and repeated attempts by the Bush Administration to have his case re-heard...

Not so much after Cruz whipped the Bush Admin, and U.N.'s ass in SCOTUS...

George W. never forgave him for that...

Bush was trying to make nice with the Mexicans, who for some reason always need to be made nice with, at the expense of those two dead girls. Bush should be ashamed.

Good for Cruz for standing up for those girls.

Bush was pissed too, he thought it was a walk. Here he was the former Governor of Texas, he thought he could just tell them to do it and everyone would bend over...

How'd that shit work out for him?

I recall maybe a few months ago, I heard it reported that George W. Bush said of Ted Cruz, "I just don't like the guy." Even though I voted for Trump, that makes me like Cruz, especially that he fought and won against yet another globalist sellout by Bush.

I'm from College Station. I remember seeing how betrayed those little girls families felt by Bush doing that. It was all over the news when Cruz won the Supreme Court ruling in it. I remember neither girls families could even talk to the media after the ruling, they were just weeping in relief.

Medellin was a world class piece of shit, there was no doubt about his guilt, he confessed and knew all the details...

He deserved to die for that.

Glad Texas stood firm on that fact.

Cruz is the most conservative candidate the GOP has had in years. But he is a politician. And his name is not Trump so good luck converting anyone around here.

I am now rooting for a Trump-Clinton race. Which would open the best opportunity the Libertarian Party has ever had.

I think if people would look at the Nine Cases Ted Cruz argued before SCOTUS, the brilliance of the arguments, the reasons for the cases, and the fact that he won all NINE!!!

Ted does come across pretty scripted, people need to see a more personal side to him, his reasoning.

Yeah Cruz is not as charismatic as Trump, he comes across as Scripted and even wooden a lot of times. See I knew him from his time as Solicitor General, and I knew his ideology and frankly his intelligence...

You can see it if you look back at his SCOTUS cases, he's absolutely brilliant. But just to listen to him on a stage it doesn't come across as well.

I'll tell you this about Ted Cruz (for anyone who's interested, and I know a lot of you aren't), the guy is a Constitutional Genius. He knows it backwards and forwards, and he's voted in that vein for the four years he's been in the Senate.

If he doesn't get to run for President I hope someone will consider him for a SCOTUS seat at some point...

There's a lot of disinformation out there about Cruz, but there's a reason he's very well loved here in Texas. We like him in the Senate sure, but we also remember the things he did before he took the Senate seat.

Greg Abbott called him a Constitutional Genius. He lives, breathes, and votes it. I don't see him changing that as President.

I think he's our best chance for a return to true Constitutional Government.

Re: The Curious Case of Ted Cruz and Jose Medellin
I remember when the Jose Medellin thing came up. There was actually a connection to this guy and a death in my family...this after he was in prison (but that's a story for another time), and I was Shocked Bush came out with the stance he did on that. After being Governor and presiding over so many executions then to come out in favor of Mexico, the U.N., and the International Court...

Bush sold the fuck out, then got butthurt when his allies like Perry, Abbott, and Cruz abandoned him on that issue.

It's not a big deal to me one way or another, but I do think Cruz gets a raw deal on a lot of disinformation a lot of the time. If people knew about his personal accomplishments they would identify with him better...

That's partly the media's fault, and it's partly Cruz's fault for not getting those Nine SCOTUS cases out there for people to look at.
