I have read that the rebellion was financed by Qatar so that a gas pipeline could be run through Syria to get natural gas to Europe so that it would not be dependent on Russia for natural gas. This is why Putin is propping up Assad as well as why the Europeans established their power structure in the Ukraine. Yes, once the rebellion started, Assad committed atrocities against his own people. Where the Syrian people stand, one cannot know without free elections. |
