We have filed just fine every year but this year we got a letter asking my husband to prove his identity. We have tried to use the Identity Verification Service, call the #s provided and none work! Calling the IRS is a joke they just end up disconnecting call. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I hope Trump gets elected to kick some butt. Dealing with identity theft is a nightmare, especially if it involved medical files. Someone used my sisters information when getting admitted to the hospital and she has been fighting to get her records cleared up for over 10 years. They won't delete records just add more information to them. She goes to a new doctor and they say oh I see you had cancer 10 years ago. She says no I did not. The nightmare just keeps coming back.

Good luck.

Taxpayers Receiving Identity Verification Letter Should Use IDVerify.irs.gov

Español

IR-2015-54, March 18, 2015

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded taxpayers who receive requests from the IRS to verify their identities that the Identity Verification Service website, idverify.irs.gov, offers the fastest, easiest way to complete the task.

Taxpayers may receive a letter when the IRS stops suspicious tax returns that have indications of being identity theft but contains a real taxpayer’s name and/or Social Security number. Only those taxpayers receiving Letter 5071C should access idverify.irs.gov.

The website will ask a series of questions that only the real taxpayer can answer.

Once the identity is verified, the taxpayers can confirm whether or not they filed the return in question. If they did not file the return, the IRS can take steps at that time to assist them. If they did file the return, it will take approximately six weeks to process it and issue a refund.

Letter 5071C is mailed through the U.S. Postal Service to the address on the return. It asks taxpayers to verify their identities in order for the IRS to complete processing of the returns if the taxpayers did file it or reject the returns if the taxpayers did not file it. The IRS does not request such information via email, nor will the IRS call a taxpayer directly to ask this information without you receiving a letter first. The letter number can be found in the upper corner of the page.

The letter gives taxpayers two options to contact the IRS and confirm whether or not they filed the return. Taxpayers may use the idverify.irs.gov site or call a toll-free number on the letter. Because of the high-volume on the toll-free numbers, the IRS-sponsored website, idverify.irs.gov, is the safest, fastest option for taxpayers with web access.

Taxpayers should have available their prior year tax return and their current year tax return, if they filed one, including supporting documents, such as Forms W-2 and 1099 and Schedules A and C.

Taxpayers also may access idverify.irs.gov through www.IRS.gov by going to Understanding Your 5071C Letter or the Understanding Your IRS Notice or Letter page. The tool is also available in Spanish. Taxpayers should always be aware of tax scams, efforts to solicit personally identifiable information and IRS impersonations. However, idverify.irs.gov is a secure, IRS-supported site that allows taxpayers to verify their identities quickly and safely.

IRS.gov is the official IRS website. Always look for a URL ending with “.gov” — not “.com,” “.org,” “.net,” or other nongovernmental URLs.
There will be a time in the not so distant future when they will hunt Liberals with DOGS.

IRS computer problem shuts down tax return e-filing system

The IRS stopped accepting electronically filed tax returns Wednesday because of problems with some of its computer systems. The outage could affect refunds, but the agency said it doesn't anticipate "major disruptions."

A "hardware failure" forced the shutdown of several tax processing systems, including the e-file system, the IRS said in a statement. The IRS.gov website remains available, but "where's my refund" and other services are not working.

Some systems will be out of service at least until Thursday, the agency said. "The IRS is currently in the process of making repairs and working to restore normal operations as soon as possible," the IRS said.

IRS hacked using stolen Social Security numbers
Thieves were trying to generate E-file PINS, the agency said
02/10/2016

Crooks have been using stolen Social Security numbers to try to get information that could be used to steal tax refunds, the Internal Revenue Service said.

Most of the automated attacks were aimed at generating E-file PINs, the IRS said. The PINs would then be used to generate phony returns or to waylay refunds.

The Social Security numbers were used in abot 464,000 automated attacks, of which about 101,000 successfully generated a PIN, the IRS said.

The agency, which is no stranger to hacking, said that no personal taxpayer information was disclosed in this incident and said that affected taxpayers would be notified by mail.

Sometimes they just do this kind of crap. I was trying to go visit some of my wifes family out of the country all summer and my passport wouldn't go through, finally they asked me for all these old yearbook and old drivers license pictures and I got it in the fall.

Had to take a late vacation with the family and my son had to miss two weeks of school over their stupid crap.

Hacking of Tax Returns More Extensive Than First Reported, I.R.S. Says

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service said Monday that hackers had gained access to the tax returns of more than 300,000 people, a far higher number than the agency had reported previously.

In the coming days, the I.R.S. will send 220,000 letters to taxpayers whose returns were probably viewed by the hackers, the agency said.

The agency had said in May that criminals using stolen data gained access to tax returns for 114,000 people through software called “Get Transcript” that allows taxpayers to retrieve their returns from previous years.

Relying on personal information — like Social Security numbers, birth dates and street addresses — the hackers got through a multistep authentication process. They then used information from the returns to file fraudulent ones, generating nearly $50 million in refunds. . .

I was born in the United States too, but I had to prove my identity several times in the last few years. Every time I had a license to renew. What made me feel vso mad was when I spent maybe 35 on certified copies of legal documents, and I am standing there explaining my life history to a DMV official, when a Mexican walks up with a green card and nothing else and they take his picture, hand him a license, and he is on his way. I am still waiting while they get another lady to look at my stuff and scan everything in.

For what it's worth I live in WA state and I updated my voter registration because I moved and wanted to make sure everything was legit before the deadline and I was required to input my drivers license # and social security information. So some states on requiring it.

But no, the irs did not give me hassle when I did my return this year.

There is a literal cottage industry of people stealing identities and filing false income tax returns. I had it happen to me several times...I even had the IRS confiscate MY bank account because THEY gave a $6,000 tax refund to someone filing as me. I have NEVER gotten a return anywhere near that big in my life, even when I was married and my children were dependents. You would think that might have tipped them off, but no...So, I had to go through a nightmare, and I now have to get an ID theft pin number from the IRS every year to file.

Someone probably filed a return using his social security number. Once you get through to the IRS, they will probably give you an identity protection pin. Next year they will send you a letter with a new pin number to file for 2016 taxes. There is a spot in Turbo tax to enter this.

The Aussie is correct.

Someone may be using your husbands SS#.

If you do get a hold of a human being at the IRS, ask how much total income has been reported. If it's more than what is on his W-2, someone else is using that number.

Check it out.

Also, identity theft issues here. Only talk to IRS agents that you call on their numbers. Don't send anything by mail or answer any questions if they call you. It's probably not them.
