OP, being of Muslim upbringing (however agnostic deist), I am horrified if these numbers are true. Seems a bit exaggerated, however definitely a major issue. You care correct in saying this is an African cultural black phenomenon, as you are not going to find this practice in Persian countries, Indo-Asian, or Mediterranean regions. Both are unnecessary practices, but FGM is beyond barbaric. I don't even know how else to describe it. The vagina is sewn to such a small hole, intercourse is virtually impossible and urination takes place through that opening, resulting in massive infection in the tissue behind it by leftover urine and the resulting bacteria. When it's time to give birth, these women are then sliced open, then sewn back up.

I'm sorry for you too, Phoenix. We didn't circ our kids. The pros outweigh the cons and it's their body. I believe in self-autonomy. I realize it's worse as an adult, but if surgery is needed in the future, so be it. They might have testicular cancer too, and I'm sure that's no walk in the park either, but no surgical procedure is; but we felt no reason to be "proactive" living in a first world country with sanitation and the ability to teach proper hygiene.
