“It almost sounds like a cannon ... so deep and just like, echoey.”

- Danielle McManus, earwitness, Fair Lawn, NJ, January 15, 2016

Friday night, January 15, 2016, residents in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, along the
Passaic River reported to police and media very loud, metallic booming sounds
between 6 PM and 2 AM Eastern that remain unidentified after investigations. Police
received other loud metallic boom reports earlier in the week as well, but have no
answers. Why have there been repeating cycles of booms, metallic scrapings and
trumpet sounds throughout No. America and other parts of the world since January 2011?

Fair Lawn, New Jersey, is 17 miles north of Newark and 18 miles
northwest of Manhattan along the Passaic River. For more
information: CBS2-TV, Manhattan.

And wouldn't NORAD know about it? They explicitly stated on their Twitter feed that there was no NORAD or USNORTHCOM activity there.

Edited my post to reflect their tweet:

NORAD & USNORTHCOM ‏@NoradNorthcom 1h1 hour ago
NORAD & USNORTHCOM Retweeted USGS
No NORAD or USNORTHCOM activity in the area.

No mention of Air Force or other branches...still I think NORAD should certainly be aware of any type of training exercises in progress. Isn't their job to guard the skies?

NORAD Claims ‘No Combat Activity’ in Area of Reported Sonic Booms

NORAD spokesperson Michael Kucharek said that there has not been any reported combat or military activity in the vicinity of the sonic booms felt in the states of New York and New Jersey.

Re: Earthquake in NJ?
Sonic booms from fighter jets flying offshore were mistaken for earthquakes by residents along coastal New Jersey and Long Island on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Residents reported that buildings shook and the ground trembled — but the US Geological Survey said there was no seismic activity in the area.

Aircraft flying faster than 761 mph — the speed at which sound travels — create deafening booms that sound like explosions.

An official for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst told News12 they did not hold exercises Thursday that would have caused a sonic boom, but the USGS blamed the noise on aircraft breaking the sound barrier....

Here's what you are missing

These Booms/Shaking in NJ happened today during the afternoon.
At the time it was in the upper 30s across most of NJ.

For a "frost quake" to occur the ground has to be saturated with water and then rapidly freezes during a quick vast drop in temperature.
Today when the event happened in NJ the sun was out and it was in the upper 30s meaning if anything the ground was thawing.

There can't be a frost quake when it's above freezing temp which it was in NJ when all this happened.
