Re: Earthquake in NJ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71338076

The Ramapo Fault sits on the North American Plate, which extends past the East Coast to the middle of the Atlantic, where it meets the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an underwater mountain range in constant flux. The consequences of this intraplate setting are huge: First, as Gates points out, “The predictability of bigger earthquakes on…[such] settings is exceedingly poor, because they don’t occur very often.” Second, the intraplate setting makes it more difficult to link our earthquakes to a major cause or fault, as monitors in California can often do.

You damn right it does. Ever been beneath a jet breaking the SB at 500 feet. It makes you tremble. It puts fear into to you.

You fuckers have no right to talk until you have worked on a flight line with F-15s.
Just the takeoff from 300 yards in afterburner will rattle your insides like a sub woofer on steroids.

I buy the sonic boom

That was the Mythbuster's video I was trying to post....but it wasn't in that earlier clip posted.
They did successive passes with and F16 Hornet at 500 ft intervals from 1500ft to 500ft and showed how it can damage glass and the "test house" they setup too.

I'm going with sonic boom.
The question still remains though....WHO or WHAT was it. hmm

"Aircraft flying faster than 761 mph — the speed at which sound travels — create deafening booms that sound like explosions."

...As others have chimed in here, I heard no 'deafening boom,' from inside the house, anyway; just the intense house rattle, 7 or so times over 1 1/2 hour.

Little Egg Harbor, NJ; a shore town.

I did go outside and saw nothing in skies. No one else I know said they saw anything either.

How far off shore could this supposed boom have been to have such an impact? People in middle of NJ felt this.

We are used to occasional jets using the proving grounds in nearby Warren Grove. Those jets, you definitely see and hear.

Jets in the air.

Except... NORAD flip flopped on their story. I'm relatively certain that they ^^^ know what is in the air.

Assuming that said jets were over the ocean...could it be that those jets were chasing something?

Which then dominoes into a shitstorm of unintended public awareness that couldn't be surpressed, hence the backstepping.

As I said before these were felt in PA. A good 75 miles from the coast. Sonic booms can be felt 1 mile away for every 1,000 feet in altitude. If the jets were on the coastline they would have had to have been flying at least 75,000 feet.

Max altitude for an F-35 is 50,000 feet

So I guess we can speculate that either...

The jets went supersonic over land

or

It was something that can fly much higher than an F-35

or

It wasn't a sonic boom

Here's what you are missing

These Booms/Shaking in NJ happened today during the afternoon.
At the time it was in the upper 30s across most of NJ.

For a "frost quake" to occur the ground has to be saturated with water and then rapidly freezes during a quick vast drop in temperature.
Today when the event happened in NJ the sun was out and it was in the upper 30s meaning if anything the ground was thawing.

There can't be a frost quake when it's above freezing temp which it was in NJ when all this happened.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47045624

I live in south Jersey. The ground isn't thawing yet since it's been 17- 20 degrees every night. The 20-25 inches of snow everywhere is melting. I am just reporting what the geologists have said happened. ....frostquake.

A cryoseism, also known as an ice quake or a frost quake, is a seismic event that may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. As water drains into the ground, it may eventually freeze and expand under colder temperatures, putting stress on its surroundings.

Just don't call me a dumbass when YOU don't have the answer!
 Quoting: nutmeg

A frost quake is a rare weather occurrence that happens when temperatures fall to cold extremes.

Extreme cold temperatures are required for a frost quake

frost quakes are caused by a sudden rapid freezing of ground and bedrock, usually when temperatures go from above freezing to below zero.

(Cryoseisms are very locally felt," said Dr. Jon Ebel, senior research scientist at Weston Observatory at Boston College. "Just a few miles away, people won’t notice it. But people right next to it will feel it.")

USGS @USGS
The Navy has confirmed testing of supersonic aircraft offshore from where sonic booms and shaking were reported.
 Quoting: Gaelic

If the military is testing supersonic aircraft in the NY/NJ there is always some kind
of PRE-warning ahead of time so the public does not barrage 911 with calls.
They didn't do that this time....which means it wasn't them and they are now just making a cover story.

Also....
Someone called into one of the NY/NJ area radio stations this afternoon at the exact time of the BOOMS and said
he saw a tiny silver dot with some kind of halo around it very high up in the sky headed south/southeast at high speed.

Who or what it was is unknown, but it sounds like the military is creating a cover story saying it was theirs.

You're right - being anywhere near them overhead is unforgettable. the sound is very distinct and unmissable for a good long while before and after the jet passes by.

I can be in my basement and I'll hear one coming, have time to get up and get outside and then look for it to pass by. I'll hear it for a time after it passes as well.

Not to mention also that they do not rattle my home.
