Many of these folks are homeless by choice. They are ferrel people. We have had congregations of them around here. They camp on vacant property. Burglarize homes. Buy booze, litter the ground they stay on. They are illiterate and just plain do not want to work. What you do is walk up to any group of them and say really loud, "anyone here want a job?" See how many takers you get. That will tell you whether or not you should waste your time, let alone money on them. |

The last time I visited Las Vegas I was watching all these crowds of people, oblivious to anyone and everything outside of themselves. It was like that crowd scene in the movie "Matrix" all in a big hurry to get nowhere. They seemed so unreal to me. I started observing everything around me and *saw* for the first time, all these poor lost souls, the homeless ones, lying on park benches right in front of the expensive hotels and casinos. I spent the next several hours handing out all my $20 bills to these folks, rarely saying anything but making eye contact. I *saw* them and they *saw* me, soul to soul. Later that night, at my hotel, out of boredom, played one of their slot machines and promptly won thousands of dollars. The machine attendant told me she had worked at this casino for ten years and never saw this particular machine pay anything, lol The moral of this story? I don't know. In the gap between your thoughts shines something far brighter than the sun, more profound than all of the universe...and too beautiful to even imagine |

When I was driving the expressway every day I used to carry an extra lunch with me. Not for those who just beg and beg, but if I saw someone with a will work for food sign or a homeless bag lady walking with her cart, I would give it to her. Make a sack of sandwiches and give them to people pushing a cart with all they own in the world in it. Take a few bags of food to the local food bank. They can always use more especially this time of year. They get lots of donations during the holidays but they run out of food on other months. Open your eyes and look around. You can help the world one person at a time. |

Many churches have outreach programs. Habitat for Humanity builds houses for people. Collecting canned foods for people is good at this time of the year. Mentoring young people though Partners program. At one time our family adopted an elderly lady that had no local family. She lived alone and was eating dog food when we first found out about her. We did her shopping for her, bought groceries for her and took them to her home. She was able to cook for herself and keep her home clean, but couldn't drive. She had little money, and the bit that we did made sure that she always had fresh food to eat, and a ride to the doctors office, etc. It meant so much to her. She was like a family member to us. There are hospice organizations too where they train you to help families of terminally ill people. The opportunities available to help others are endless, you just have to seek them out. Good luck in your journey! He who thinks they are happy probably are, but he who thinks himself wise is probably the greatest fool |

User ID: 148164 United States 10/25/2006 06:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Since you live somewhere that is very cold in the winter, how about buying a few blankets and giving them to the homeless? When I lived in the San Francisco area, I used to always buy a few extra groceries when I was at the store and give them away. I also decided that if someone asked me for money, and I had a dollar in my purse, I would give it, no questions asked, no trying to figure out if they deserved it or would spend it the way I thought was best. I decided if the person was in the position of begging, they must be in a bad place in their lives, and I would show kindness if nothing else. I hated trying to decide who I should or shouldn't give to, so I stopped judging and just helped. I never went without what I needed - giving a dollar when I had it never seemed to mean I had to go without even a cup of coffee when I wanted one. And I hope, that if I ever find myself in a really bad place in my life, someone will help me and be kind. Quoting: maluthat is what paying it forward is all about, but you can never count on the help being there, just hope and pray It's a sad but true statement that you can't count on help from others. One day I was paying my electric bill at the grocery store and they charge a $1.25 service fee that can't be included in the amount you write a check for, if you are paying by check. So, you either have to pay $1.25 in cash, or write another check. The man in front of me only had one check with him and no cash, so I offered to pay the $1.25 for him. I had it in change in my purse, no big deal. The man couldn't believe I would offer to do this - he was actually nearly in tears thanking me. I thought how sad it is that we as a society have come to this, where we can't even expect the least bit of kindness from strangers, that paying someone's $1.25 service fee is considered a huge kindness, when it should be just common decency to help in a situation like this. Anonymous Coward User ID: 113248 United States 10/25/2006 06:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Does your area have a place like a Lighthouse For the Blind? Many blind individuals have such a difficult time getting around town to buy groceries, pay bills, etc. Read to them from the newspaper or a magazine. Go to a retirement center and just spend time with the elderly. Maybe someone who doesn't get many, if any visitors. Volunteer your services at the local library, reading to the younger kids at storytime. Volunteer to work the telephones at a battered women's shelter. I wouldn't recommend handing out sandwiches to the homeless on your own or when alone for safety reasons and don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying all of the homeless are dangerous. But working in a soup line is something else to think about. BEST BET? Call your city hall and ask for a list of places that are in need of volunteers, then call all of them, get some info. and pick the one sounds right for you. That's important because some people don't enjoy being around the elderly, some don't enjoy working a soup line. The environment is different at all of these type of places. If you volunteer at one and are not comfortable, try the next one on your list. You'll find the one that's right for you. |

People care more of their pets than homeless citizens; probably crime woild go down if there would be some kind of a dole for homeless/workless...it's about humanity. They don't want food, they want money, and some of them make 300 to 500 a day from kind hearted suckers, and they drive new cars too, altho they usually have a bicycle parked behind the bushes. Some of them are not so smart and have been caught getting into some nice cars. |
