In Louisiana, A Nuclear Power Plant Just Had An Emergency Shutdown(SCRAM) You Won't Belive WHY
The plant in question is RiverBend, and it just had an emergency SCRAM on the 9th of this year.

It is located near the town of St. Francisvillie. Of note, 4 days ealier, on Jan.5th of this year, the plant also had a "Seconday Containment "Inoperable" Event with a Radiation Release.

What caused the SCRAM?

Lightning. That's right LIGHTNING.

Here's the info and links:

"“AUTOMATIC REACTOR SCRAM ON MAIN STEAM ISOLATION DUE TO ELECTRICAL FAULT

On 1/9/16 at 0237 [CST], River Bend Station sustained a reactor scram during a lightning storm. An electrical transient occurred resulting in a full main steam isolation [MSIV] (Group 6) and a Division II Balance of Plant isolation signal. During the scram, level 8 occurred immediately which tripped the feed pumps. A level 3 signal occurred also during the scram. Subsequent level 3 was received three times due to isolated vessel level control. The plant was stabilized and all spurious isolation signals reset, then the MSIVs were restored. The plant is now stable in Mode 3 and plant walkdowns are occurring to assess the transient.”

During the scram, all rods inserted into the core. The plant was initially cooled down using safety relief valves. Offsite power is available and the plant is in its normal shutdown electrical lineup.

Guess no one thought to ground the facility?

The January 5th incident:

"At [2258] CST, on January 5, 2016, with the plant operating at 100 percent power, the main control room alarm indicating high pressure in the auxiliary building actuated. Operators confirmed that the building pressure, corrected for temperature, indicated slightly positive, whereas the building pressure limit in Technical Specifications is 0.0 – 3.0 inches of water negative pressure. Secondary containment was declared inoperable, and the Division 2 standby gas system was started. This action restored building pressure to the acceptable range, and the building was declared operable at [0027 CST] on January 6.

“This condition is being reported in accordance with 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(v)(C) as an event that caused the secondary containment to be potentially incapable of performing its safety function. The NRC Senior Resident Inspector was notified.“.

VENTED--that means a radiation release

Noted in the NRC as"Emergency Class: NON EMERGENCY
10 CFR Section:
50.72(b)(3)(v)(C) - POT UNCNTRL RAD REL

Also of note--is this notification came 2 days AFTER the incident.

When the New Madrid lets go, even if by some miracle the facilities up and down the Mississippi do not sustain any seismic damage, everywhere the grid has failed will send the nuclear reactors into emergency shut down and back up generator cooling. God help us if the cooling pools or piping are damaged in a New Madrid quake scenario. The middle of America would be practically glowing.

Any day now....

The only thing that saved New Jersey during "hurricane" Sandy was the fact that the tide went out.

ONE FOOT MORE TO MELTDOWN – A nuclear “near miss” USA

It seems we came within 1 foot of our very own Fukishima during Hurricane Sandy. If the sea level had been 1.2 feet higher it would have breached the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant’s flood defenses and shut down their diesel powered generators that were required to cool the plant. This is exactly what happened at Fukushima. Oyster Creek is an identical design to Fukushima. How come we haven’t heard about this in the MSM? I’m no expert, but when a category 1 hurricane surge can come within 1 or 2 feet of breaching a nuclear power plant, someone should be worried. Are you?

Great post.

Here's a thought: what makes up the electrical power when coal-fired plants are shut down?

What plants are run at 100% around the clock to make up the difference?

Nuclear. That's what.

An unintended consequence of Obama's meddling with our power infrastructure. Trying to save us from that necessary gas carbon dioxide, Obama puts us at risk of a meltdown by running our nuclear plants full blast.

Hope and change.

We've had more than a few plants within a hair's breadth of going Fukishima. Knock, knock.

What really sucks is lockheed martin admitted it had fission generators.all this nuke stuff should be gone already.thats why i say, this is planned destruction of the usa and world.
Just go back to how i learned to love the bomb.the last five minutes explains it all.a hundred years of fallout,10 women to each man in a bunker.
The rest are left to nature.

Fukushima is a test bed.
I know because all radiation has a magnetic moment.
They could put superconducting magnets at those sites and trap the majority of the radiation.

The New Madrid quake will happen. Nuclear plants will go sideways, leaving much of the East Coast generationally uninhabitable.

We need to digest these hard facts.

They did, but being grounded does not mean that damage from lightning is not possible.

Actually no... The nuke plants run pretty much full bore at all times anyways.

It is natural gas fired turbines that are picking up the slack from the closed down coal plants.

ill translate.

the power failed on the feed into the main steam isolation valve. resulting in one turbine getting more steam than the other.

the pumps that are responsible for putting water into the system tripped and stopped pumping. which caused the reactor to run dry and nearly meltdown. if they had not have pushed the rods in, in time, or the system also became faulty, it would have been an entirely different story.

they then reset everything and magically it was working again then this happened two more times in a row.

the plant is running at external power input while they check everything.

thankyou for the pin9

This really deserves it own well resourced thread, and I am planning on doing one on the state of spent fuel and where and why it is being reposed ONSITE at EACH reactor in this country, but for right now, PLEASE go to this link and sign this petition.

It is about stopping the proposed long term storage of hi-grade nuclear fuel in a repository around the Great Lakes.

Please think back to what has recently occured at Nye County NV. Hanford WA. Carlsbad, NM (WIPP)

Do we really want to risk the contamination of the Lakes (worse than they already are) and everything downstream?

96,000 more signatures are needed for this drive.

Please spread the petition drive via email/twitter/Instagram and STOP this!
