No Niño instead I'm wearing a sweater in the middle of the summer..
Lima, Peru is not that far from the equator, and since it is on the southern hemisphere summer began Dec 23.

This is one of the coldest summer in years, temperatures go from a low of 18°C at night to a high of 24°C at noon, the ocean is cold, the beaches emptier than normal.

It is not raining in northern Peru, there is no drought on the south, which happens even with moderate El Niño events.

Ocean temperatures are normal or below normal in the southern hemisphere, a little above average in the northern hemisphere. Check it at [link to satelite.imarpe.gob.pe]

MSM is still reporting that it will be the greater Niño ever and temperatures will rise to 33°C. I wish they where right, but I'm checking ocean temperatures and they are getting colder every day. [link to peru21.pe]

You of course realize we are just at the very beginning of this thing, right? In the southeastern U.S., we definitely have an El Niño.

We have had a few summers recently during which we didn't reach 32 at all.

Upwelling?

Peru's coast has an upwelling ecosystem. Upwelling is something that doesn't happen during El Niño.

From Wikipedia: [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

Another threat to the productivity and ecosystems of upwelling regions is El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system, or more specifically El Niño events. During the normal period and La Niña events, the easterly trade winds are still strong, which continues to drive the process of upwelling. However, during El Niño events, trade winds are weaker, causing decreased upwelling in the equatorial regions as the divergence of water north and south of the equator is not as strong or as prevalent. The coastal upwelling zones diminish as well since they are wind driven systems, and the wind is no longer a very strong driving force in these areas. As a result, global upwelling drastically decreases, causing a decrease in productivity as the waters are no longer receiving nutrient-rich water. Without these nutrients, the rest of the trophic pyramid cannot be sustained, and the rich upwelling ecosystem will collapse.

That's really weird because I live in Buffalo, NY and it's only 10 degrees (supposedly) yet I have my window open because I'm sweating to death. The heat at my house is only set at 68. I was just telling my friend it feels like the world is stuck upside down right now!
People who are intimidated by you talk bad about you with hopes that others won't find you so appealing.

Rubatosis - n. the unsettling awareness of your own heartbeat, whose tenuous muscular throbbing feels less like a metronome than a nervous ditty your heart is tapping to itself, the kind that people compulsively hum or sing while walking in complete darkness, as if to casually remind the outside world, I’m here, I’m here, I’m here.

The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves. ~ William Penn

The ocean and atmospheric temperatures where hotter in july (middle of winter here) than they're today.

Great El niño events like 82-83 and 97-98 and some minor ones peak in January. I remember that by this time in 1998 every river north of Lima was flooding badly. Highs where around 35°C with lows at 26°C.

Can't agree more with you. Something weird is happening but it isn't El Niño.
