Nice, I need a .380 pocket pistol. Got it narrowed down to the S&W Bodyguard with Crimson Trace installed or the classib Walther PPK.

Anyone have experience with either of these? Is there another I should consider?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70445410

Had a S&W PPK in 380. Ran ok, but would give me slide bite. Even with the beavertail.
Then S&W recalled it. After they "fixed" it, the damn pistol would never go threw a magazine without some kind of failure. Traded in that POS.
Never tried the bodyguard.
Right now in 380, I have a Sig P230, Glock 42, and even a cheap pre-lock Bersa. All 3 run excellent.

And that Bersa cost a whoppin' $150 at the local pawn shop.
Only investment into it was to buy another magazine and remove the magazine disconnect safety.

I'd recommend the Glock 42 if price is of no concern though.
The Sig P230 is really nice too, but weighs as much as a brick.

 Quoting: Copperhead

Exactly as sweet.
Cobra bought the Jennings machinery.

Frankly, I thought it would be a great throw-down gun.
Now, I've got to find something else, cuz this one is cool.

I doubt it would stand up to 1000 rounds going through it, but that's what my 1911 is for.

Great little ankle backup, or something to throw into my lunchbox.

2) if my Cold Steel R1 breaks.

Self-defense ain't really in the list.

I have a few 380's ( PPK,Grendel, M11 380, Makarov ) and while they are ok, you can now get the same size gun in regular 9mm. My PPK is amazingly accurate using Silver Bear 380 but other ammo's like Winchester white box is inaccurate and stovepipes.

I have had excellent results with this cheap crud called Perfecto. Italian, 95 gr. FMJ, even real brass cases.

And the only reason I got this is because I want a gun chambered for every caliber I am like to stumble across ammo for, when, you know...

If cutting a coil on the recoil spring helped, then the slide was cycling too fast.

If you wanna spend $10 on some Wolff magazine springs a pound or two heavier, it'll likely help ensure reliability even more.

What was wrong with it? Failure to eject or failure to feed?
 Quoting: DARTH SILIOUS

Fucking both, if you can believe it.

Before I started smithing it, it would alternate between those two problems.

I was literally ready to take a hacksaw to in the throw in the garbage.
 Quoting: WeaponX2

Spring was too soft? I've seen that with both. Also have seen a shitty feed ramp cause failure to feed's.
 Quoting: DARTH SILIOUS

Strangely enough, the first thing I did was cut a coil out of the recoil spring.

Second was polish the hell out of the feed ramp with mere 400 grit wet/dry.

I have a Cobra .380 as well. I picked it up in a trade deal with a friend and just threw it in my safe. I eventually took it out and tried to shoot it, but it wouldn't feed through the whole magazine without a FTE. I wound up polishing the feed ramp, and oiling up the mag and now it's a fairly reliable handgun. I wouldn't put my life on it, but I actually don't mind putting holes in paper with it lol

Congrats on reviving one!!!

Sweet! I'll try to do some pics later today.

1) Basically I used 400 grit on every metal-to-metal contact area on the frame and slide. Just rubbed it around everywhere like a first date.

2) Polished the hell out of the feed ramp, so now I can see my reflection in it, sorta.

3) Clipped 1.5 coils off the recoil spring, and inverted it so the "machined" end was against the front of the slide and the rear was against the frame.

4) Snapped the back of the firing pin off, because it is known to snag on the firing pin spring. Polished it with the 400.

5) Didn't have to do anything to the factory-standard mag, didn't do anything to the extractor, didn't have to use any new magazines.

PPK in stainless. It's heavier than most modern arms but there is a LOT to be said for this gem. Lots of safeties, indicator pin, etc. And there is a great trick you can do with the springy trigger guard. Sorta bump fire. Ammo still available in lots of flavors and Walther eats 'em all. Stands up on extended mag. Great belt carry gun. Good resale value.

Con's: Dirt issues. I made a plug set with string out of silicone fore and aft, works very well. Keeps hammer clean, which is biggest problem. Slide rides low so getting nicked is a potential problem if you're used to, say a Ruger, which rides higher. Also you must get a grip (tight) to function flawlessly. Loose wrist will cause failure to feed jam. It gets disrespect for being low power.

I love the .380, not too loud, not too expensive, still available(Oops,,,)lotta types. And since it IS low power, you actually have a bit of choice in lethality. A double tap with my .38 has always put down my favorite dogs in extremis, so I am fairly sure, if needed it could kill with multiple shots. But the .38 has a fair chance of being too weak for suicide if some depressed person gets ahold of your gun. They might get a major injury, but survive to reconsider what they have left of life, etc. And likewise you could very well be able to testify that you may have shot a person but actually didn't intend to kill, if you only shot once. Gonna have to face up to your decision somewhen, right? In SHTF we're going to all have to make decisions we can't really immagine today, when it's ''close friends' we're possible having to be dealing with.
