Mr. Rogers annoyed me, even as a gradeschooler. I wanted to like him because we had so few channels then. He seemed like a complete sissy, not unlike the boys I knew who dug the show. Even his weird sneakers bugged me. The claims he was a combat hero are false. I wonder if even that urban legend was a contrived reinforcement when his influence began to fade.
