Re: Who created the term - shill?
Not me, but I have to claim the unfortunate title of 'The man who created the title NU-METAL' for real unfortunately by default!

Quick story goes like this, there was no title as such as yet in print, my band (who I won't name) sent a demo to Kerrang magazine and got reviewed who mentioned (as per our bio) that we were calling ourselves 'NEO-METAL' kinda Electro, Industrial, downtuned mayhem via White Zombie, NIN etc at the time but different...

Within weeks that magazine started branding all the new scene NU-METAL.

True story and FUCK YOU Kerrang forever for stealing and abusing that term you cock smokers!

You coined the term "nu-metal?"

That's pretty dope.

The first band that I heard someone call a nu metal band was limp bizkit. And I always hated them.

Nookie was alright.

Unfortunately yes and i'm not kidding. Otherwise I wouldn't have even wasted my fingers typing all this madness but yes.

First time i've told this story since mid 90's. I can still produce said article and date of our review and no mention of NU-METAL before that date but within weeks of our review... BOOOOOOOOOOOOM NU-METAL is a thing.

Re: Who created the term - shill?
It originated from a guy named Dr Marvin Shillington. He was infamous for lobbying for tobacco in the late 50's. He was the guy directly responsible for the advertising campaigns in the late 50's and early 60's that not only denied that smoking was bad, but promoted the fact that it was actually good for you.It is estimated that big tobacco made over 2 billion dollars ( 1960's) money as a direct result of his campaigns or "shilling'. It used to be termed as pulling a shillington, but somewhere along the lined got shortened to shill. That's where it came from.

There are and never will be "shills' here in such a little cultural backwater, just anyone who has a different opinion.

Re: Who created the term - shill?
"one who acts as a decoy for a gambler, auctioneer, etc.," 1916, probably originally circus or carnival argot, probably a shortened form of shillaber (1913) with the same meaning, origin unknown. The verb is attested from 1914. Related: Shilled; shilling.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

I'm not certain who created the word.

I have heard it used in reference to real estate transactions for several decades.

It has taken on a new meaning with respect to the internet.
"One person with courage is a majority." - Thomas Jefferson

"You’ve heard that we are what we eat. But we also are what we think".

“Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views."
-William F. Buckley Jr.
