The French police dog killed in a dramatic shoot out with terror suspects in Paris was just months from retiring, according to his handler.

Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian shepherd, was killed in the raid on the apartment block in Saint-Denis, where Paris terror attacks mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud was hiding out.

Abaaoud was suspected of being behind the attacks which included suicide bomb attacks on the Stade de France, mass shootings at bars and restaurants and a massacre at the Bataclan music theatre.

Diesel's handler, who has not revealed his identity, said he had 'absolute confidence' in the dog, adding: 'Both of us knew how the other would behave in the situation.
