The next 1000-point down day is coming

Retail investors are getting it half right, moving money out of stocks for the past year. Most have done so out of fear of the "next collapse," as they did in early 2009 before finally reinvesting around 2012. This time, they are close to their portfolio highs from the middle 2000s and believe they should get out of the stock market before the next crash. That makes some sense, better to pre-panic than post-panic.

Investor fear, primarily among baby boomers, is probably well founded in the short-term. The world is facing serious economic headwinds driven by demographics and debts which I have covered in several columns, investor letters and recently in my monthly investor webinar. The combination of investor skepticism, a slow economy and a Federal Reserve that keeps talking tough makes it very probable that we are going to get another thousand-point down day very soon. In fact, I am pretty sure we will get two or three within the same few weeks.

How horrible will it get for the stock market? How far will emotional sellers and traders drive the markets down? Will it be the beginning of another financial collapse? Here's what I think.

I believe fear and emotional selling will drive the stock market down into official bear-market territory, however, I have a hard time making a case for anything more than a run-of-the-mill bear market. It also seems to me that there is not enough stupid retail money left in the stock market to take it below the strong support level around 1550 on the S&P 500 for more than a week or two. For traders or those seeking a hedge, rolling put option positions on the SPDR S&P 500 SPY, -0.17% makes a lot of sense to me given those contracts are cheap and have potential large upside.

What investors may get for the holidays — another selloff
[link to www.marketwatch.com]

Following the biggest drop in six weeks for U.S. stocks, some out there are scratching their heads, while others are a little alarmed.

“Today’s selloff does not make a lot of sense, because there wasn’t any big economic or corporate news. It is puzzling to see such a delayed reaction to a strong jobs report in an otherwise quiet week,” said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading & derivatives at Schwab Center for Financial Research, summing up yesterday’s action to MarketWatch.

True, markets will have a hard time sidestepping last Friday’s strong jobs data, which to some all but guarantee a Fed interest-rate hike just in time for the holidays. The fear is that anticipation of the hike could lead to a repeat of the volatility we saw this summer.

Nour Al-Hammoury, chief market strategist at ADS Securities, says drops of 1% for Europe and U.S. stocks yesterday look unsettlingly familiar.

“This follows the pattern of June and September — the previous months when the rate increase was expected to happen — and this nervousness over buying equities could start another market correction,” he says in a note to clients.

Good thread OP, when do you think it could happen? Everybody thought that it was happening few weeks ago, markets were crashing but...nothing.

No idea, when it crashed a couple months ago it was pretty exciting. Then it went back up for no reason... So we are probably topping out again. Maybe after Thanksgiving...

You re probably right..so strange, it looks like a big game without value. Is it still real? Does it still impact our life? When i look at the global economy it s like all the countries are in the same team. So so strange...

Kind of like how the gov't budget deficit jumped $500 billion in just the past week. How can that actually be? All funny money. THe real issue, when things start to devalue, will you be able to get money from the bank to buy food...

Me too. Purchased an old horse farm last year and have spent this year remodeling and building. Expanded the garden plot so that I could basically feed 20 people easy if needed. Next spring adding some animals for meat and dairy. A few horses for heavy loads and hunting.

My profession is software development, but now I have a backup plan. software developers won't be in big demand after the collapse.

Waw i m not as lucky as you i live in a city near Paris then if something happen i can survive few weeks with my family.
I suggest you to do not accept more than five people more, we don t know how long it can take and how much will be our enemies.
Unhapilly guns will be the best thing to have soon...i hate all those people who control our life and do what they want. I m sure they re all in the same team, preparing for a huge event arriving soon. It will be a world disaster. Everything looks scripted (sorry about my english)
