In late September I took a job as a picker on an apple farm for harvest season. It was one of the most enlivening experiences I've ever had.
So if you eat a beautiful apple this season, maybe I carefully picked it for you! :)

I met some of the most unforgettable characters this world or other has to offer: Puoyo (which literally means chicken, in his own language), Rado, and Yvanyeh (all in their early 50s). They were Romanian. Puoyo was the oldest, I think, 54. Though I was first concerned for him because he looked at least 70--hobbling around and muttering his romance language under his breath when the Chefin would ride him. He hobbled and muttered very often. He wore silly rain boots. Yvanyeh pretty much looked like his name would otherwise project. He picked the apples we all missed at the tops of the trees and could gracefully gather 5 in one hand if needed. He had great bushy eyebrows and plots of hair growing from his ears--he played the Balkan Folk music periodically with his phone. Rado joked that Yvanyeh had 10 kids.

We smoked so many cigarettes throughout the working day I could hardly breathe each morning on my borrowed bicycle, on the way to the farm. We all took turns being hollered by the Chefin, Frau Maria, in the most unrecognizable dialect of the language here, and then some. But I was invited to lunch with her family every day and she also put me on the tractor for quite a bit of the time.

The tractor stops for no one and nothing but the voice of Frau Maria, who, luckily or learnedly, speaks tractor wind. She has the taught body of a young athlete with the face of a raisin. She is 60 years old and picks with the Romanians--who live on the farm for a few months every year (for 7 years now). If it weren't for her work ethic, the farm would surely fall apart. If it weren't for their tacit genius and thick skin, the farm would surely fall apart. They know more about the process of harvesting apples now than she does herself, and they have to tell her which rows are ripe to pick and when, though she doesn't like to admit it.

Rado and I became great friends. He is one of the most charismatic performers I've ever met in my life. He was the ambassador of the trio and spoke to the Chefin in fairly sound German. We spoke to each other in German, though communicated mostly through exaggerated gestures and imitations. When Frau Maria would kick me off of the tractor to go empty the crates herself, we had the rows as our stage. We took turns doing impressions (mostly of Frau Maria) and rolled around in fits of laughter. I don't consider myself a funny guy most of the time, but the feeling I had when I made those old men laugh contagiously, even through all of our barriers, was something that changed me a little bit as a person.

We taught each other some of our first language and so Rado often said to me “G****, drive tractor!" after Frau Mariah said "Los!" and it was time to continue chugging that old tractor down the aisles.

I told Rado he looked like he was to become the president of his country one day as we tossed apples into the walnut tree to gather a snack and I meant it. He had a great visage with a firm pot-belly. Not one of those squashy ones. The kind that round out like one were eating grains of steel. He was the kind of guy who could wink at you and make you feel like one of the guys, like you were accepted.

On my last day, though none of us knew it was going to be so, Rado challenged me to an arm wrestling match at a picnic table the end of one of the lowest rows on the farm. We only had enough time as it took for Frau Maria to refresh the crates for picking. The winner would be gifted with a cigarette, obviously.

I've been challenged to many arm wrestling matches (i'm mostly not as strong as i sometimes look) and Rado was by far the most diplomatic. I always let the challenger set the rules. There are so many slight variances of procedure that many people don't take into consideration when they think about the sport. Most people think their way is a standard, especially when embracing the role of the challenger, which is typical, I guess.

The Roma are great olympic wrestlers, historically, which may have had something to do with his professionalism. There is a lot to learn about a man through his approach to arm wrestling. Some will pounce the start, some will misposition themselves, some will lean with everything they weigh, some will squeeze the hand to death and wrench at the wrist--and, of course, everything goes. As it should. Such is life. But ours was as natural as the October breeze evaporating the patches of sweat from the spines of our shirts. We practically leaned back as if we were helping one another up from the ground. In the split seconds it took for us to arrange our dispositions to one another--everything clicked. We squared in every measure. Puoyo and Yvanyeh looked on and laughed and smoked while laying in the grass. We locked up in our mesh for quite some time, though I began to weigh over slowly. Before I could haul him far enough to be acknowledged by the guys we called a stalemate. Though I later asked him for a cigarette. And he flipped open his pack of John Player 100s and told me about his sister in Tennessee again (he was still confused as to why I would leave the US, seemingly to pick apples).

When the church bells rang off in the distance 6x it was time to go home and Frau Maria let me know I was no longer needed now, as it was expected to rain for the remainder of the week and they would be making Saft and Schnapps with the press instead of picking from the fields. I thanked her for everything and gave her bussis and then went to hug all of the guys. I knew I would probably never see them again. But we impressed one another forever. I looked back and saw Rado take one last look and we both nodded at a distance. I heard Frau Maria making fun of one of them for tearing up but I'll never know which one for sure. It rained the entire week thereafter.

So a fire happens & the Government resigns?
