My six year old daughter just accepted into GIFTED PROGRAM! Public school - be worried or proud?
So my baby June, in 1st Grade - her teacher at the last PTO (We call them that in this State) - they are teaching her 3rd Grade English and Math since she "naturally" is able to pick up on the 1st/2nd grade material.

Now - I've read other threads... about gifted children being "targeted" -

Hell, I just read something about during the Cold War they really pushed the "gifted program" for students and "morphed" them...

So I'm super excited - yet also worried.

I'm not a mother, I'm a Dad - so there's a slight disconnect, (Boys love Mom, Girls Love Dad) - yet Dad's don't have that magic intuition that Mothers do.

Since it's a Public School, should I be worried?

It really depends on her teacher, and the actual school. I would not worry, but be more attentive to what's going on. You could have a special thing going here for your daughters benefit. Look into their program and see what has sprung from it in the past, to see what can become in the future.

The best thing you could do for her if she is a gifted child is to remove her from the public school.
A private or charter school will have the ability to teach her on the level she requires and not sit waiting for the other students to catch up.

Really...get her out of the public system.

Thanks, yeah, I um - I'm really drilling into her head (and her older sister, which, isn't mine Biologically yet calls me Dad - she's a K-Kid and is Vice President of the same school, she's in 5th) - Young women love civic work for some reason!

I keep telling them, I mean she probably doesn't comprehend it - No smoking, no drinking, no drugs - study hard - HAVE ALL THE FUN IN COLLEGE -

Get that scholarship into college!

No Student Loans!

Defn. keeping one eye open.

Re: My six year old daughter just accepted into GIFTED PROGRAM! Public school - be worried or proud?
It is important to remember that a child with an IQ of 164 is as different intellectually from a child with an IQ of 132 as that child is different from the 100 IQ child. Forcing a child with an IQ of 164 to learn at the pace of the average child, or even the pace of the moderately gifted, is akin to placing an average child in a special education classroom and asking that his/her learning rate be slowed down to keep pace with the rest of the class. The frustration of highly gifted children forced to stifle their love of learning in inhospitable environments can result in withdrawal, behavior problems, or psychosomatic symptoms.

I was part of one between 86 and 90. I wasn't actually TAUGHT all that much extra with the exception of a few classes that were specifically for the gifted program students, mostly dealing with math. One of them in third grade was a class almost entirely devoted to logic problems. The grand majority of my time in the program I was tested in a variety of ways and had frequent meetings with a nice man who I am pretty sure was a psychologist. He didn't talk about any home stuff or any feelings type stuff. I think he was just there to gauge my progress in the program.

The testing included everything from memory to cognitive reasoning to light and sound sensitivity to reflexes.

Do I think this was some nefarious plot to change me into some super soldier or some other crap? No. I do, however, think that the skills that I picked up in those classes and testing sessions are heavily responsible for my ability to think critically and my penchant for not putting up with stupid bullshit.

The negatives? I was ostracized by many of my peers because I was in a "special program". I chalk this up to jealousy for the most part as I was out of the main classroom at least once a week for this program.

Beyond that, I am unaware of any negatives of being in the program. That being said, it was nearly 30 years ago when I started. Things may have changed.

All of THAT being said, public school is freaking evil in a lot of ways. If you can, get the kiddos out as soon as possible.

Re: My six year old daughter just accepted into GIFTED PROGRAM! Public school - be worried or proud?
In Florida, the gifted program schools are always smack dab in the middle of the hood. So they basically send the really smart kids to school with the hood rats in hope that through some sort of intellectual osmosis, the dumb kids will absorb some intelligence.

It's been experience from observing such social experiments, that it is usually the other way around. The smart kids usually try to fit in socially by acting like those they are surrounded by all day.

A smart, ambitious kid doesn't need a gifted program. They will be smart and ambitious anywhere they go.

Be proud. But don't put her through it. Especially if it's linked to the IB curriculum. IB is the international backing program, teaches lots and lots of Agenda 21 style programs. That I'd be worried about. All 3 of my were accepted & I refused it.

Care to elaborate?

College acceptance, smooth
Other levels of education post college, smooth

Is that what you mean by targeted?

A few posts above "Testing for psychic powers" and also, Come on, I hang out at GLP - I remember some large thread about some California "gifted" program from the 70s that people were apart of on GLP and they did some "crazy" things..

Every parent thinks their child is the greatest... I'm proud and hopeful she carries this "loving to read and do math" for a scholarship - Yet I don't want her to suddenly end up in a random building at the local State College to be tested at such a young age for these "abilities"

As another person pointed above, also.

Zell Miller and HOPE scholarships are available to any American high school student willing to actually give a damn about their future. If gifted helps your child work towards those funds, great.

Re: My six year old daughter just accepted into GIFTED PROGRAM! Public school - be worried or proud?
I went through one from when I was 9 to 13 in the early 1980's to the mid 1980's. I had to make my own way to another school very far away, but made fast friends and that was not an issue. I will tell you that it swelled my head a bit and I was subject to some harassment by classmates, but not for long as I was quite a popular young person. However, the resentment from the adults was more difficult to deal with. They can be quite jealous and hateful.

As far as the program itself was concerned, it was largely unstructured or at least appeared to be. Emphasis was on exposure to culture, traveling, creativity, technology ( especially computers which at that time were non existent in other schools) and media, including writing and producing tv style shows.

As I grew older, I did in fact end up in the military.

Hope this sheds some light on it from a students point of view.

Re: My six year old daughter just accepted into GIFTED PROGRAM! Public school - be worried or proud?
Every kid is different. If you feel she would like to be more challenged and is currently bored with her schoolwork, and the teachers are better, then I would go for it. But if there's a chance she will lose confidence and get stressed out then no. You want her to feel happy. And she's only six!

So many people say you should be homeschooling - but it's not realistic or possible for many people - i.e. have to go to work.

And some public schools are really good.

Good luck to your little angel.

Make sure she knows she can tell you anything, and that if someone ever tells her to not tell her parents something, she needs to tell you immediately. Meet with the school frequently for updates on what special curriculum she is getting. Ask for a name and background information about any special instructors the school might bring in. Talk to your daughter frequently about what they have her doing. Make sure nothing they have her do makes her scared or uncomfortable. Make sure she is having fun learning.

Today's gifted is last gen's average due to the constant lowering of standards. I agree with others and if you can afford it put her in private school.
