Anyone Ever Heard of This?

Tonight, from inside our house, my husband, son and I heard repetitive loud booming noises. We went outside and it was repeated loud, staccato booms coming from all directions. We know what fireworks sound like and we all agreed that was no fireworks. No thunder I've ever heard is short, staccato loud booms like that and there wasn't a single drop of rain.
Theories, anyone? Has anyone else heard anything that sounds like repeated cannon shots in the sky?
Before you ask, no, I don't have an audio or video of it. The noises stopped before I could run back in the house to get my cell.
