I like the implicit classism of the courts that this story reveals, and is ignored by the media. It also clearly demonstrates the use of this stratification as a psychological weapon against Joey Meeks.

If you have money, when you get a letter like Joey Meeks did, you go and get a lawyer. You thus have a chance to effect the process BEFORE charges have been filed.

However, if you lack the financial resources, you have to wait till you're charged so that you can request a public defender.

I suspect that your suggestions of their intentions are correct. It's quite clear that Meeks is innocent, at least of the charges being floated.

Misprision of felony? The kid called the cops as soon as the news of the crime hit. What an interesting law it is. Consider the advice we hear so often, "never talk to the police without a lawyer."

Well, what do you do if you're aware a crime has been committed, but you can't afford a lawyer? You haven't been charged with any crime, so a public defender isn't available to you.

How do you report the crime to avoid committing misprision, but protect yourself from the authorities twisting your testimony and using it against you? For that matter, how do you protect yourself if the police want to question you about anything?

There are probably a couple hundred thousand people or so guilty of misprision of felony working in corporations around the country.

Think of the number of executive assistant's, cubical farm chattel, mid-level manager's, and Junior Vice President's who are aware of corporate malfeasance and never report it.

I sure would like to see what this country would look like if someone could wave a magic wand and force the justice system to abide by the equal protection clause, and enforce already existing laws equally across society.

Even so, we'd still have the situation that those WITH money tend to have the justice system work FOR them, while those WITHOUT tend to have the justice system happen TO them.

We're talking now weather Meek is innocent, while a month earlier on this forum there were numerous discussions on even if it was a hoax or not. I mean, Roof is innocent that for one is sure (railroaded or just accused on made up photos and evidence I dont know) now Meek gets charged. For me, one of two things is happening here - either Meek had a role to play here and messed up (interviews maybe?) or they need more to build up a good case - a best friend testifying that he was planning the attack in details is just enough to back up the ridiculous photos and the manifesto thing.

Just two days ago Roof tried to strike a plea deal, someone is going to tell me that this guy did that, tried to kill himself with a gun later but now is trying to avoid painless death by lethal injection? No, the most logical explanation i can get is that he was arrested, drugged nicely and put in the cell. Now he dont want to die for nothing. And again you have a confirmation of your statement - had he had a good lawyer, he would have not been charged in the first place (throw out the pictures and manifestos and federal charges are gone, dont know what the probable cause was at the state charges)

Basically, they were both screwed by default. As you said, had Meek called in to report everything if he has said infront of the jury or media something out of the script, he's out, if he shuts up, same thing.

Hey, VeldtVW! Why you hiding your light under a bushel?

For those who don't know (which was all of us) VeldtVW made a MAJOR breakthrough in this case.

Thread: Dylann Roof exiting the church photo

I've just pinned it. Hope you're around, VeldtVW.

Dylann Roof’s Friend: Joseph ‘Joey’ Meeks Says Shooter Planned It For Six Months

Dylann Roof’s friend, Joseph Meeks, speaks out about the disturbed Charleston shooter. From his testimony, it seems that Roof had been planning this for a while.

That was from back in June, when they must have just been ramping up production.
