Great sleuthing OP!

Wouldn't the receivers be overloaded by the volumes of data if done on a massive scale?

Re: Something odd I've noticed while capturing packets...
One thing that was drilled into my brain both through experience and intelligent mentors was "if it seems to good to be true, it IS", and of course NOTHING is free.

How many "free" apps have you downloaded for your smartphone?

Ever try to delete the 'google' apps on an android? GOOD LUCK TO YOU! And if you think you have gps turned off, or wifi, or even 4G data, all you have really turned off is your own awareness and usability of those functions. According to my own experimentation, a smart phone is continuously transmitting 4G ,3G or in most cases 2G data. It is also scanning for wifi connections even when wi fi is disabled. One of the things it is recording and transmitting is your location, which seems to be really important. I am almost positive that smart phones are continuously transmitting audio, bio telemetry on the user and users in close proximity to it and GPS position to google.I am equally almost certain that this information is used not only for targeted advertising , but to create a profile on the user. I had a lawyer tell me once that the government knows more about people than they know about themselves, and their memory is 100%.

Now here's the clincher. A smart phone is a the absolute pinnacle of technology available to the consumer. It is a powerful computer ,gps, bio telemetry sensor, dynamic entertainment device, and telephone that can talk to anywhere on the planet from just about anywhere on the planet. They didn't give you this for 150 dollars because they were trying to be nice to you. they gave it to you because they are exploiting it's function.

No. In a word, no. Before they would release the technology they would already have the infrastructure in place. Every single digital transmission of data is recorded and source referenced.

40 years ago if you had offered people a device with the function of a smart phone nearly everyone would have said FUCK NO, Don't even turn it on near me!
PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR FREEDOM FOR THE "convenience" of technology.Thye know where you are, what you are asying, and who you are saying it to. Thye know every website you have ever looked at and they have a very accurate profile on you, they can predict not only what you are likely to buy, but what you are likely to do at any given time.It is an electronic prison, and it is nearly impossible to totally escape. I went to the wilderness recently, took along a cell phone to take photos and videos. I was in a place that has no cell service at all and yet this phone was intermittently linking to a 2g internet connection. The signal strength was maxed out. In other words even when you are in a place where you have no service, THEIR service and data collection is still functioning. The only sure way to disable a smart phone is to take the battery out of it and put it in a metal box that is grounded.

When the phone detects any wireless network, encrypted or otherwise, it sends the BSSID (MAC address) of the router along with signal strength, and most importantly, GPS coordinates up to the mothership.

This page allows you to ping that database and find exactly where any wi-fi router in the world is located. Note that iPhones also send this BSSID and Cell Tower Information up to Apple, as well.

You can enter any router BSSID/MAC address to locate the exact physical location below, or try the demonstration router by hitting "Probe" below.

Note: Google has taken steps to stop my tool from working, including explicitly blocking me directly.

Additionally, their geolocation API will now only share information that Google has on *you* only if you provide them not only information about your router, but unwittingly provide information about *other* people's routers.

Re: Something odd I've noticed while capturing packets...
Someone asked about firewalls... Comodo is an excellent software firewall with some good basic traffic monitoring tools.

Get a router with a firewall. Learn, learn, learn. A search engine is enough to take you from no knowledge to programming yourself a steel door in hours. And it's not like this isn't worth your time.

I don;t know if you can spoof your MAC on a smartphone (there an app for that?) but if so do it, and you can most definitely do so for your routers and computers. Just cycle it every so often. My laptop's wireless card currently thinks it's a piece of fiber optic testing instrumentation made in New York.

Re: Something odd I've noticed while capturing packets...
There is no doubt that cell phones are a major personal security exposure, BUT...

All cell phones are basically ham radios. They can only transmit so far and proper location identification is critical to how they work. The phone has to know where it is to know what radio frequency for what tower to call and the phone company has to know where the phone is to know what tower to use to reach it. It's that simple.

You can't defeat the location services on a cell phone because that is how they work. It's why they are called "cell" phones. They constantly look for and switch to whatever radio "cell" they detect as being the strongest. They only way the phone company won't know generally where you are every minute of every day is if you turn the thing off and take the battery out.

The shit is practically modern day wizardry & alchemy.

If ya don't know how & why your cell works, you can rest assured that it is being used against you.

And yes that goes for your Pc as well.

If you can't pick apart every piece of code up & down then you can count on someone squeezing something in there that you would just plain not approve of.

A Pc & cell is just a modern day Trojan horse modified to infiltrate the individual. Wether it be thoughts, ideas & or insubordination.

Using IDS AppID Detection, we've been noticing a significant increase in transnational data traffic communicating with multiple common "smartphone apps".

Also lots of sneaky rootkits and undetectable(?) "spyware" being detected(?) all over the place too. Primarily increasing tension since ~ Dec. 23rd 2015.

Something odd I've noticed while capturing packets for clients who also have multiple public hotspot access points...

Based on real-time MAC address look-ups; there's a shitload of mobile devices out there that are constantly HTTP POST'ing about all nearby MAC addresses and signal strengths, including local Cell ID location info, mostly reporting back to random servers in China.

In other words, disabling GPS/Location on your smartphone doesn't mean jackshit if your mobile device is secretly transmitting transmitter details in your near vicinity.
 Quoting: Iamaka

This is part of a global spying system being implemented... Designed to target and trace even if you have such things turned off. The chips are largely being produced in China and recently there has been outrage due to the fact equipment can be hijacked. The hijackable chips are even in drones and missiles.
