[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]
I know the Bayou Corne sinkhole is "old doom" on GLP...
However, the off-gassing continues and that sinkhole is STILL growing every day.

I heard that somebody miscalculated and fucked up the engineering on how to use deep underground salt-domes.
Then they tried to patch it up in 2011 by seeling the Oxy3 wellhead, but then all hell broke loose in August 2012.

In other words, they fucked up a salt-dome which is also connected to a massive amount of underground methane gas, within the tectonic boundaries along the Gulf of Mexico.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is also likely connected with the Bayou Corne sinkhole.
Fractured Natural Gas is likely expanding northward (underground) along the Mississippi, potentially with a terminus of hard rock in the Northern New Madrid region.

Precipice is; if you notice any off-gassing, or signs of tectonic uplift/faulting in your area, please maintain a 72hour emergency kit.

Thanks for keeping us updated on the Bayou Corne sinkhole.

It's definitely slow-motion doom.

The thing that I'm not clear on is why more attention being paid to the fact that there's no reason to believe that it's going to stop.

Now that the salt formations have been breached there's nothing to stop groundwater from undermining the entire salt formation.

Considering the extent of the formations, it may take a long time, but eventually the region is likely to resemble the various maps of a post-doom America.

I noticed the wells at River Bends were rising w rad count in Jan of 2012. By Aug 2012 it was over 430,000 picocuries/liter. They were desperately digging new wells onsite to find out where the leak(s) were coming from. Then the notices on NRC events stopped...around the time the sinkhole eq's were being covered (start of crisis).

River Bends is in Baton Rouge, way north of Assumption Parish, and almost central of the sinkhole and reelfoot fault center.

You are one of the few on this forum that will see the importance of that connection.

Great to see this getting more coverage, OP.
5 stars, for sure!

I did a couple threads on this myself in 2012...and
I did quite a bit of "digging" on the material that
was available at that time. I would NOT be at all
surprised of most of the material about Bayou Corne
Sink Hole history--especially anything which is seen
as derogatory to the oil industry has been purged
from UTUBE and other sources. This was not only a
HUGE ecological disaster, it was one of the most
blatant examples of political corruption in action
(at the time of the Bayou Sinkhole news was breaking)
with "damage control" done at levels never before
seen in this country. So...there are actually TWO
HUGE STORIES with regard to the sinkhole.

Here is one of the best interviews on the topic that
you will ever be able to find on the internet. There
are all kinds of theories out there about what happened
that preceded the Bayou Corne Sinkhole Disaster...but
this one is the one the oil industry REALLY HATES!
While the SALT DOME is a very important component of
this disaster...there is an element that was NEVER
covered in mainstream media (and still isn't)...and
that is that BP OIL CO. actually drilled into the
side of an extinct volcano...WHICH THEY MISCALCULATED
BEING IN THE AREA OF THE DRILLING!

If you want to hear about the whole story and WHAT
may be in store for the unfortunate citizens that live
near the Bayou Corne Sinkhole--and the Louisianna coast
--listen to this!

Are you implying that there was a breach of a storage well containing TENORM (Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials)? Sounds to me like that's what you're implying.

If they were picking up increased rads in the groundwater wells for River Bend Nuclear Power plant, and it wasn't from a local leak, it had to come from somewhere.

We know that several wells in the Occidental Geismar #1 (Oxy #1) cavern were used for re-injection of NORM via a Solka Floc system, which transformed NORM into TENORM.

Oxy #1 is the cavern directly behind Occidental Geismar #3 (Oxy #3). Oxy #3 is the salt cavern which collapsed, forming the Bayou Corne sinkhole. It lies on the edge of the Napoleonville Salt Dome, and is operated by Texas Brine.

Texas Brine also sought and received permission to pump NORM/TENORM into wells in the Oxy #3 cavern.

So between Oxy #1 and #3 we could easily have 160 cubic feet of TENORM sludge. Those repositories of sludge could have breached before the sinkhole showed visibly on the surface. Over time, as the sinkhole has grown and more wells (and likely Oxy #1) have been breached, thousands of cubic feet of TENORM could be leaking into the groundwater.

If that's what they were picking up at River Bend, not good. At all.

While a terrible ecological and human disaster, the sinkhole is only doom in the immediate vicinity of the sinkhole. The salt dome itself is a very localized structure and did not contain natural gas itself. The dome was being solution mined to create a storage cavern for natural gas. A petroleum exploration well was mistakenly located just above the cavern of the salt dome, penetrated the cavern, and created a pathway for surface water to enter the cavern; essentially creating a "bathtub effect", such as happens when the drain plug is removed from a full bathtub.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Google "Lake Peigneur Salt Mine drilling accident" on you tube for an awesome video. So,the Bayou Corne sinkhole will eventually stabilize, but not before it has destroyed some homes and drastically altered the LOCAL (NOT regional, national, or global) ecosystem.

See post above yours. You are correct, the shallow, and not so shallow, sediments are very plastic and will eventually reseal themselves after the pressures have stabilized somewhat. The salt dome itself is only expelling air that was captured in the dome when the surface water began to drain in; it too will reseal itself after a longer period of time. Again, see the "Lake Peigneur" video referenced above for am even more dramatic example of this. Lake Peigneur eventually stabilised and recovered.

BTW, I am a geologist with 25 years experience specializing in environmental geology and hydrogeology in Louisiana.
