Just watched a man abuse his dog and stood there like a coward. AMAQ.
I was just walking in the Tenderloin down a fairly busy street (ironically to PetCo) and saw a man, crouched down in front of his dog, literaly face to face with him.

The man was screaming. At the top of his lungs. In a FROTHING rage. At the dog. Flecks of spittle were hitting the dog's face.

The dog's TERRIFIED face.

And I froze. Something inside twisted and broke. If the dog had looked at me I may have lost my mind.

I walked away.

Dogs are property. He wasn't hurting the dog.

I wouldn't have walked away if the man had been screaming at a powerless human, but he was only screaming at a PERSON.

So I walked away. And if the dog had looked at me...

Fucking hate, hate hate the Tenderloin. I lived in SF for 4 horrible years- want to erase those from my memory forever. I lived downtown on Market street, where it was like Walking Dead with all the homeless and every other footstep you dodged a pile of human shit, vomit, or disgusting remnants. I once tried to break up a fight between a woman (prostitute I think) and pimp and nearly got my ass beat, and I'm a woman. Every time I took my dog out for a walk I was followed, harassed or accosted. I can't count how many times I've been followed right to my front door by men. I worried about being raped every time I took a walk at dawn or dusk. I worried about getting mugged whenever I took the subway to and from work.

It is a scary, horrible cess pool of violence, poverty, drug addiction, sex crimes, murder, disease and mental illness.

Move as soon as you can, OP. The poor dog is the tip of the iceberg.

I'm a coward because I was (and am) willing to violate "God's laws". I wasn't willing to violate MAN's law.

If it had been a human, I could have gotten away with intervening.

Because it was only a person, I didn't knee the guy in the face while he was crouched down there.

And if the dog had looked at me.

Leaving PetCo now. Shit. This has turned into a twitter feed.

I've lived here for a little over ten years.

I love it. However, I'm not a woman. That changes a lot.

Actually, I used to love it. Thanks to Homeland Security and Legion Corporation the delicate web of criminal activities which had been in homeostatic balance and thus fairly safe had been torn up.

Now it's like a bunch of vipers who had reached detente being shoved into a bucket. A bucket of vipers. Bet that wasn't on your bucket list.

Sometimes all you can do is walk away, for your own sake. In this case it was likely best for the dog as well.

Whatever you may have said or done to the man, he probably would have taken it out on the dog later.

Karma is a funny thing, and you will have to settle your karmic debt for walking away - if you haven't already - but you know that.

You feared being held accountable to man's law, I would have feared for my own safety... I am a coward as well.

As far as wishing him dead... I can't blame you for that either as some beings should not be incarnated as a dung beetle, let alone as a human.

It's alright, man.

In CPR classes I learned that that reaction is sometimes unavoidable in people. It's a natural "freezing" thing that happens even to the best, and even pros during disasters or triage.

Life wasnt supposed to be this way, you know. None of us are really prepared for violence and gore, thats why ptsd/depression/mania sometimes arises after.

You're still a good guy, and strong. It's alright.

I'm kinda the opposite, which is just as bad. Got it from ma. Mouth will be the 1st to run in a "that aint right" situation, and it'll put you in danger that way. Gotta try to think your way out of it, which is always hard in the heat of the moment. Maybe a super loud *COUGH* as you walked by mightve helped, lots of abusive aint-shit assholes slow their roll when they know they've got an audience. I mean I can say that now cause I wasnt there and have time to think on it though.

That was the primary reason why I didn't even say anything. I knew physical violence would only make me feel a little release of the rage, but wouldn't get the dog out of the situation.

And the dog would have likely defended the guy if it came to an altercation. That would really have twisted me.

No, I'm comfortable that I made the right decision, the logical decision. Normally when I'm confronted by a situation like this, I don't think. I react to the injustice before I have time to think about it. I'm not going to let someone be harmed right in front of me and not do something.

I like that I'm stupid in that way, and it only bothers me that we've set up our society in such a way that I just couldn't do anything that would have made that dogs life better.

I have very complex beliefs about the power of intention, but the one thing I'm completly comfortable with is if the guy dropped dead right there due to my intention, I would be comfortable arguing with any "god" about the morality of that intention.

OP I love your insight and posts on glp. However, I think you need to toughen up a bit. The dude was yelling at the dog. Not kicking or beating it. You are not a coward, you just used common sense. Don't be so harsh on yourself. You would have intervened if it was something that could have permanently harmed the dog.

I would have gotten arrested. I am impulsive, and have a deep connection to animals.

I would had asked him what the hell is wrong with him to bully his own dog like that.

Then I would have reported him to the Humane Society.

There are very good dog training books that say to get on the dogs face and tell to discipline than.

My son did this to his dog ONCE and the behavior was never repeated.

He would never hurt an animal- and he's a pacifist Buddhist type o guy

Maybe you need to read some dog books

I was just removing the spittle that hit my face from the OP's rant and his death wish against the man, when I realized the OP was participating in what he is proclaiming to hate but taking it to the next level. Deserving of death. Passive aggressive.

All are emotional reactions set off by a trigger. Triggers are usually formed from either witnessing or experiencing abuse and cause extreme emotional reaction. Although, not every person who yells is yelling based on emotional triggers, they are doing it for impact for the safety of others or to "wash" the listener's ego clean to be receptive to realizing they don't know everything and they need to listen up and learn. Most people think they know everything and are usually only receptive to being "told" or "taught" when they grant personal permission beforehand to let someone teach them or tell them the way it is or the way it could be. Enrolling in college is an example of granting permission and opening the mind to other ways and ideas. People tend to remember being yelled at. An example is a drill instructor, which still has an extreme effect on some people even though they chose to participate and join the military. Usually those who were bullied and sexually shamed as children with no one steady to comfort them, drive by comforters, and provide security so they can build up feeling secure, are the ones who suffer even when they know beforehand they will be taught with yelling and screaming for impact; drill instructor.

What we have here, went from something that triggered a man's response to his dog. (No one knows why the man reacted that way towards his dog,) to knowing what triggered the response of the OP causing the OP to wish death on the man who screamed at his dog.

Wishing death or praying forthe death of someone is a way to avoid personally analyzing the issue and get real about it because it takes brain work. It's your brain and mouth saying you had enough. Can't deal. Make the problem go away. That is all. Karma is not recognized and badly trumped and swung around like a bat hitting a ball. Go to God.
