CDC puts Doctors on ALERT for The Plague

They've found plague in whistle pigs and some other wild critters in Idaho too. Creepy as hell.

Ewwwww - ok, that suuuuuucks...

If the fleas and thus the plague start to spread to ordinary pet dogs and cats, then we'll have a real outbreak perhaps. Until then, it will only be a concern for campers and folks living in the boonies.

What are whistle pigs? Are they like feral hogs? I'm relatively new to the boonies and keep discovering new (to me) creatures around here all the time.

Marmots. Like woodchucks, but live a little higher in the mountains.

It happens every year, but they wont let us kill all the fucking prairie dogs. As long as they let infected prairie dog towns destroy our fields, we will have a few cases every year. I don't see it getting out of control, we've been doing this as long as I've been in the Rockies (longer than most of you have been alive). The answer is to eradicate the black death carrying rats with a weight problem. Fucking tree huggers think they're cute, waddling around spreading disease, so we wont be getting rid of them any time soon.
Nebraska takes a common sense approach to the problem; if the prairie dogs endanger livestock, they gotta' go! The county or the state will come out and poison them. No problem!

I read that the plague of the 1300's, although originally thought to be from fleas etc(bubonic), scientists and scholars now think it was pneumonic plague.

Makes more sense that a serious plague would be pneumonic not bubonic.

I just can't see fleas as the cause across the entire asia and European continents.

SO, maybe bubonic not a big worry.(not easily transferred)

I believe they carry Leprosy, fleas are the usual vector for Plague.

I live in Colorado, we have infestations of prairie dogs everywhere. You can't kill them, they are like a protected species. There's a colony right next to an elementary school about a mile from my house.

If we cut down on the prairie dog population, I think there would be less of this occurring. They are prime vector.

No, it's not a natural problem. It's man made and that's when they are on it.

The plague is also endemic in the rodent population of Manchuria/Western Russia called marmots. they're similar to prairie dogs I think.

I think the plague of the 1300s was pneumonic as well, and maybe other things mixed in, as I don't think fleas could move that fast. Never made sense to me.

There have been multiple cases of bubonic plague in the southwest reported in animals over the past few years. So the all of a sudden CDC Alert is pretty suspect, IMO.
