West Africa: Ebola Rounds 1 now 2, Malaria, and now Meningitis
West Africa now faces a Meningitis threat with a serious shortage of vaccines. This disease is a known child killer.

Although Meningitis regularly occurs there, an uptick in the disease has left 800 dead so far this year with 12,000 people infected in Nigeria and Niger alone.

With one roll-out disease after another, one can only speculate why this particular area of the world seems so plagued. Malnourishment, poverty, lack of a responsive health care system, and loss of many health care professionals last year do play an enormous part, I know. But a this point, if I were West African I might be feeling like a lab rat.

Meningitis epidemic threat in West Africa, but few vaccines

"The first large-scale outbreak of the C strain in decades has this year killed 800 of 12,000 infected people in Nigeria and in neighboring Niger, according to the World Health Organization.

In 2013 and 2014, deaths numbered 128 out of 2,046 people who fell ill, WHO said, indicating the infection rate has soared and could grow much higher in 2016.

"We've never seen this before with meningitis C," William A. Perea, coordinator of WHO's Control of Epidemic Diseases Unit, said of the resurgence of the strain."
