Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
I have a few questions, I have been to Russia a few times and I know quite a bit about the situation, however there are a few things that really puzzle me.

1. Why are Russians so paranoid? I think Russia needs its name changed to Paranoiana.

2. Why is Putin being so expansionistic when there are villages in Russia that still have no basic services like electricity. Does he not understand that NOBODY is going to invade Russia and that if he would turn his attention to making a better life for the Russian people, like roads where the trucks are not axle deep in mud and other basic infrastructure that he could be viewed as the greatest leader Russia ever had?

3. Why does Russia not understand that if they would make their tourist visa procedure easier and not make coming there such a massive pain in the ass that the Russian people would benefit on the order of billions of rubles annually from tourist income?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23393274

1. Of you have paranoia it doesn't mean you are not haunted. You claim that no one is going to attack us, but all our historical memory is in disagreement with this notion.

2. What a nice example of double standards! How is welcoming back a bunch of population that considers themselves Russian and were forcibly torn from Russia is expansionism? Did you even consider a notion that Crimean referendum is not rigged? I have friends who've been to Crimea every summer for many years - and they confirm that what Russian media were telling about "Crimean Spring" is true.
And life in Russia is getting better with time. It really is. And that's why Russians like Putin.

3. Getting tourists is just not our first priority. Especially with our huge distances between different tourist destinations. I think that establishing more advanced infrastructure goes first.

How should I answer it? O_o I'm baffled, honestly.

The main difficulty is finding work here. Without working visa it's almost impossible to settle in most of the countries, so it's always a first step.

OP, The U.S. is getting to be a very unfriendly place for older people. 1/6th of the population are Baby Boomers.

Most are starting to retire and seeking to move outside the country for places like south america and Central America. That does not appeal to me in the least. Those nations have made deals where the retired person can still get their Social security checks sent to them in hose countries.

Russia is a very big nation land wise. Russia should find a nice location and build a new city strictly for old retired americans. Many of us like Putin and would flock there. Lots of money to be had for Russia.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55335790

Well, I don't see how establishing such deal is possible between Russia and US considering current strain in relations...

But also you should remember that most of this lands are into the same climate zone as Alaska. I don't think that Americans will express any desire to live there.
Though, I've heard of Americans founding farms in province in Russia.

I hope the Russians love their children too
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48857120

Well, Khruschov was just quoting Marx but people who didn't read his books misundersood.
Later, on August 24, 1963, Khrushchev remarked in his speech in Yugoslavia, "I once said, 'We will bury you,' and I got into trouble with it. Of course we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you,"[6] a reference to the Marxist saying, "The proletariat is the undertaker of capitalism", based on the concluding statement in Chapter 1 of the Communist Manifesto: "What the bourgeoisie therefore produces, above all, are its own grave-diggers. Its fall and the victory of the proletariat are equally inevitable."

History showed that he was wrong, but still.
There's another variation of it as follows: "The only disagreement we have is on the question of land: who will bury whom in it".

silly question here. who came up with city signs in front of Russian and Ukrainian cities?

example:

[link to upload.wikimedia.org (secure)]

I saw huge signs like this in most Ukrainian cities while watching footage. I like it.
 Quoting: Matjaz

That's the thing I don't know for sure.
Quick trivia search resulted in nothing too.
But I think that Moscow, St. Petersburg and some other big cities had such ornate signs even before 1917, and then Soviet architectors imitated it and made it into tradition.

Here's a search of such signs.

Well, not really.
She had some nice songs, but I don't think she's still able to perform. AFAIK, she did not sign without lip-synching since mid-90s at least.
She married some years ago and even had two children - via surrogacy though.

If HAARP/Chemtrails heat the atmosphere of earth, Russia gains much more arable land. Do you think Russia may be playing a part in the heating of the Arctic region?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

I don't believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theory. Mostly because I know from physics course how contrails are produced.

And about heating northern regions of Russia - I encountered an interesting solution in one book: deepening the sea at the north of Scandinavia to direct Gulf Stream along the Russian Arctic. But it's a faraway perspective even if it's possible.

 Quoting: Ouija_Bored

Well, I don't really know anything about Formula One. I'm just glad they did not try to build a track in Moscow. It would have been a complete idiocy considering a climate here.

No, I've never been to Russian South. The most southern of Russian cities I've been to are Saratov and Voronezh. I plan to go to Sochi and Crimea in a few years though.

As a Blacksmith and minor Historian, I look at cultures by way of their metal work. Russia has a very impressive degree of Blacksmithing in past and even recent history. So my inquiry is in regards to the hammer of your Communist symbol. I have maintained that the hammer depicted is a one of ours, a Blacksmith hammer. Yes?
 Quoting: trueforger

Yeah, the symbolism was of "Union of Peasants and Workers", where sickle represent peasantry and hammer is a symbol of workers - metalworkers above all.
There's a monument in Moscow depicting Worker and Kolkhoz Woman that was originally placed in Paris during the World's Fair [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

OT:
As I see it, one of the main errors of Soviet ideology was disrespect towards mental labor. It sounded like this: "There are classes of workers and peasants and a layer of intelligentsia between them." Interesting fact here, that North Korea ideology integrated intellectuals as a third "class", but they have their own problems too. Because it's fine to proclaim "self sufficiency" when you have a 1/6 of the globe's land, but doing the same on a half of Korean peninsula was a complete stupidity. All the rest - including outright dictatorship and starving population is just a result of that not quite wise decision.
 Quoting: Tamonten

I THINK YOU ARE YOUNG AND FULL OF SHIT

THE SOVIET UNION WAS BASICALLY A HEAVEN FOR ACADEMICS

THE REGULAR PEOPLE GOT TREATED MORE POORLY THAN THE WEST BUT THE ACADEMIC CLASS WAS FAR BETTER TREATED

THE SOVIET UNION WAS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD WHERE IF YOU WANTED TO BE A SCIENTIST THAN YOU WOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE A SCIENTIST

THE ACADEMICS WERE TREATED SO MUCH BETTER THAN IN THE WEST THERE IS NO COMPARISON

FOR THE AMERICAN READERS - THIS GUY IS PROBABLY YOUNG AND IGNORANT AND HAS NO EXPERIANCE OF RUSSIA BEYOND HIS APARTMENT LIFE

RUSSIA IS FULL OF REDNECKS WHO LOVE TO SCREW, DRINK AND FIGHT AND MANY LIKE GUNS, RUSSIAN GUN LAWS ARE A JOKE SINCE THEY ARE NOT ENFORCED.

BY THE WAY PUTIN IS 100% A CORRUPT AND LIFELESS PUPPET

HE TOTALLY DESTROYED ALL THE INDUSTRIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS OF THE SOVIET UNION

PUTIN DESTROYED THE RUSSIAN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

HE DESTROYED RUSSIA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM

HE DESTROYED RUSSIA'S NAVAL INDUSTRY

HE IS DESTROYING RUSSIAN SPACE INDUSTRY

ALL HE KNOWS HOW TO DO IS TO MAKE DEALS WITH BIG OIL AND MINING COMPANIES SO THAT THEY CAN EXTRACT THE GOOD STUFF FROM SIBERIA AND GIVE SOME OF THE PROFITS BACK TO PUTIN

AND ALSO RUSSIA IS NOT HOMOGENOUS

RUSSIA IS VERY HEAVILY MIXED IN SIBERIA THERE ARE TONS OF CHINESE, TONS OF "ASIAN RUSSIANS" PROBABLY 40% OF THE POPULATION ARE ASIAN OF HAVE ASIAN BLOOD

IN OTHER PARTS OF RUSSIA THERE ARE MUSLIMS

RUSSIA IS A DYING COUNTRY LIKE AMERICA, I JUST WANTED TO HELP YOU GUYS FROM AMERICA OUT WITH THE TRUTH

I GREW UP IN SOVIET UNION AND HAVE MATH-PHYS EDUCATION

WORK IN AUSTRALIA IN TECHNOLOGY COMPANY

TIRED OF THE BULLSHIT ABOUT RUSSIA

IT IS A DYING COUNTRY, MIXED RACE, REGULAR PEOPLE DONT FOLLOW LAWS, SOVIET UNION WAS MUCH MUCH BETTER
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53347863

Try to type without Caps Lock and using more punctuation. My head hurts just looking at your post.

Foolish Russian nationalism you express is one of the things that destroyed this very Soviet Union you admire.
Also while academics were free to research what they wanted, they were not able to have any credits for their work. And a person who actually worked receiver the same pay as one who did nothing. That's another thing that destroyed the system.

And Soviet education and industry were destroyed before Putin came to power.

True russia is fucked because there are too many asian immigrants and people from the Caucasus immigrating, these mongrels need to be deported, otherwise there will be no more ethnic russians left. Poutine is allowing them in too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59854543

Same here - nationalism is a foolish idea for a country that was an multinational state for more than 400 years at the very least.

The Russian population is collapsing. Couples cannot afford to have children. At the rate of collapse there will be no ethnic Russians in a few years.

Just one more reason why Putin is one of the most dangerous men on the planet.

is the birth rate in Russia still very low or is it increasing ever more so
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69537526

Not very good - that's for sure. That's the topic I don't really know. The thing is most of homeless here are either hopeless drunkards who managed to sell their flats to get another bunch of bottles, or people homeless by choice. All the rest are invalids who receive special care including hospitalization and often volunteer help. The rest have a fair opportunity to return to society. As a finest example - a menial tasks (cleaning streets and yards etc.) in Russian cities are usually done by cheapest labor there is (usually from Tajikistan and other Middle Asia countries). But it's quite clear that they'd rather employ a Russian citizen if he's not drunkard.

There's a major development considering birthrates lately. Last year he had a natural increase of population first since SU times.

Well, I have no memories of SU... But I can theorize that the during celebrations there was a rather big contrast with everyday life - that's why they seemed more spectacular.

Who do you or most Russians consider to be a true hero?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69857276

If I have to choose... The Unknown Soldier.

WW2 - The Great Patriotic War - or rather "The Great War for Homeland" was just to great to pick one or two heroes.
That's why they are all celebrated collectively:
"Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal"
"When every one is dead the Great Game is finished. Not before." - Rudyard Kipling, "Kim" (1901)
"But we are still alive." - Thread: "The Great Game" by Mikhail Leontyev (2007-2008)

"Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination." - Brandon Sanderson, "The Way of Kings"
"Russia is the great Christian country with rich Islamic history" - Vladimir Solovyov (Russian Jew)
Quos Iupiter perdere vult, dementat.
"Europe can wait while the Russian tsar fishes." - Alexander III The Peacemaker

Mostly different types of soda. I have difficulty drinking if the drink is not sweet enough.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
silly question here. who came up with city signs in front of Russian and Ukrainian cities?

And this ones are of the towns near which I live:

nice, I think they're spectacular.
 Quoting: Matjaz

Korolyov is a home of Soviet and Russian cosmic industry. That's why there's a rocket on it's sign.

BTW, it seemed I was right about the origins of such signs.
Roads of Russian Empire were marked with milestones. And the milestones at the borders of major cities were ornate.
Here's milestones that were at the western entrance to Yekaterinburg: [link to www.dropbox.com (secure)]

Tamonten what are the comments in Russian media about Kurds sytuation at this moment ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1488672

There are mostly experts talking about Kurds. I usually monitor several, but I'm now behind by several weeks on it.
For now I'll quote the answer I gave several days ago:

In my not so humble (I have some qualification to assess this matter) opinion and judging from the experts I've heard (namely - Evgeniy Satanovskiy (president of "Near East Institution" think tank) and Semyon Bagdasarov (director of "Research Center of the Countries of Near East and Central Asia" think tank), Turkey is already doing pretty much everything safe from direct intervention to help ISIS.
I don't believe that, judging from the Ukrainian example, Turkey can do something that will make Europe (I mean Brussels) open their eyes - if there's no direct approval from beyond the Atlantic. There was an ISIS attack directly from Turkish territory few weeks ago, no? Did anyone even bat an eye?

As I see it, Turkey is having another transition between "imperial" and "nationalistic" ideology now. The thing is - they are trying to build empire on nationalistic foundation raised by Otaturk. "The main thing that history teaches is that history never teaches anyone", as historians joke among themselves. Previous empire built on nationalistic phraseology had a very spectacular ending just 70 years ago.
As long as Russia stays current Russia with Putin (or someone of the same way of thinking) as a president, we'll never allow it to happen. We've done throwing away allies in hope of being praised. Even Medvedev who was naive to allow "no flight zone" on Libya has opened his eyes since then and won't believe another Western initiative. We are having practical commercial relations with Turkey - but Russia will never even consider paying for "Turkish Stream" with human lives.

How comfortable are you around Pet Donkeys?

No, never. I have some pull towards Japanese culture but never to US.

Don't know. I've seen a donkey only from a distance. On Cyprus, if I'm not mistaken.

As far as I know during 90s all "secret cities" were revealed.
But I can't be sure - it is not a part of my special knowledge.

Nigel Farage mentioned once that journalists go missing in Russia.

Is the KGB still as much in control of free speech as before?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Here's one of the recurring misconceptions which made me to create this thread...

For once, there's no KGB now. It was renamed FSB (Federal Security Service) and don't manage media. We have a bunch of other services to do this work (RosComNadzor - Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications) and they just monitor content to be appropriate: blocking extremist and porn sites and other such things. Cases are passed to FSB only in the case of uncovering some serious extremist organizations.

There are of course some journalist disappearing, being suppressed and other vile things. But none of that is by hand of Federal government, I assure you.
As a rule, if some journalist is prone to seek dirt, he'll be seeking it everywhere. If you look closely at the journalists that were allegedly "disposed of because they were targeting Putin", you'd see that they were investigating mafia, corruption on municipal level and many other things. They had a lot of enemies, but when they are finally murdered, Western and Western-aligned MSM blame their death to Putin personally without any other thought.
 Quoting: Tamonten

I call bs. You think you are free what did Gorbachev say he avocated? Democracy and socialism thats not freedom. And once more president bush stated. There is no greated advocate of perestroika( gorbachevs book) then the president of the united states. And the events that took place after.. There is astong case to be made that the soviets never died . millions of people didnt just wake upone morning and change there ideology. Instead they adapted. Infiltated america with the help of other countrys. And turned her into a place we all hate that the world hates. And spread a bunch of ccommunist tested propaganda ro confuse us. This is a plan to uultimately destroy america from within. How can you not believe that? Its documented extensively. Tou should read the naked communist its writin by a former fbi aagent and everything is referenced with the soviets own teachings.

Depending.
If it's said in ignorance we usually try to explain.
If American insists, it could turn quite ugly for the most part.

There's also a different interpretation, that is more correct in wider historical perspective: "Soviet Union have won the Great War for Homeland, defeating Nazi Germany and helped United States to defeat Militaristic Japan in Pacific War. But US was the sole victor of World War 2 as a country which benefited from this war the most."
