Do you like Alla Pogochova? Have you ever been to any of her concerts?

My wife loves her and we have seen two of her concerts here in the USA.

Do you think she will come out of retirement?

What is "Communism" in Russia? How is it different than the European or American socialism? What form of government do you favor, and why?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

Well, classical definition states that Socialism is when
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his work"
and Communism is when
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need".

I don't believe that either one is possible while human are still... well, human.

As for desired form of government, it's a difficult matter. From what I encountered in different literature, the government I liked more than others was described by Japanese author Morioka. In his "Seikai" series he describes "Humankind Empire of Abh", which is ruled by a race of genetically altered humans with longer lifespan and very special culture. The thing I liked the most there was the system of succession in the Empire: only within predefined bloodline, but monarchy is not for life and the successor is chosen among all the 8 families's children by the council of retired Emperors.
It could be organized any way, but what I admired that the most qualified people chose the most qualified one of a bunch of candidates each of whom was trained especially for this position. It eradicates faulties of classical monarchy and democracy. First tend to eventually stumble when the heir is unfit to rule, the second often brings to power people who have no qualification - not to mention that people who make a choice know nothing about real qualities of the candidates and what they really need to be successful.

If HAARP/Chemtrails heat the atmosphere of earth, Russia gains much more arable land. Do you think Russia may be playing a part in the heating of the Arctic region?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

I don't believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theory. Mostly because I know from physics course how contrails are produced.

And about heating northern regions of Russia - I encountered an interesting solution in one book: deepening the sea at the north of Scandinavia to direct Gulf Stream along the Russian Arctic. But it's a faraway perspective even if it's possible.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
My father worked in Russia most of his life, but never said anything much about it. But he did say this:

In Russia, the people see the propaganda on TV/news, but they laugh at it, because it is so crude. But in the USA, people watch the propaganda on TV/news, and they fully believe in it, because it done so much more professionally. Would you agree, disagree, or have no opinion?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

It depends of what period he was talking.
I did not really see any of old Soviet propaganda - I was too young a the time when SU was still standing. But judging from people's disposition during 90s, they were unprepared for more cunning Western propaganda that flooded our screens.
Now we have several channels that you could call propagandist. But as far as propaganda goes, the main state channels do not lie at least. They are not shy of showing problems in Russia, not demonstrating Western lifestyle.

Did you know that there's two definitions of "propaganda"? Western one can be summed up as "feeding people with false or distorted information until they believe it". And Russian "providing people with information in a way that will make them your allies". Russian TV (at least the main "Rossiya" channel) goes under the last definition without question. Meanwhile Western MSM go under the first one - at least regarding what's happening in f.Ukraine.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
I can personally confirm, having spent 20+ years in lawsuits against govt officials in the USA, that Russian corruption can't be worse than the corruption in the USA. At least, it would be impossible, because every level of American politics and corporate policies are driven by it, eg, "behind the scenes" operations that operate with complete disregard to law, and without any fear of law - because all of the judges are corrupt and bought. In the USA, the mafia IS the government, but most all Americans are blind to it. The mafia in the USA didn't disappear, they just decided government and government subcontracting to be a more lucrative racket.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

It was not really a question, but still...

At least we have uniform and clear law across the country for the most part. From what I've heard about US if there's some mafia ruling the country, it would be the mafia of lawyers.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Nigel Farage mentioned once that journalists go missing in Russia.

Is the KGB still as much in control of free speech as before?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Here's one of the recurring misconceptions which made me to create this thread...

For once, there's no KGB now. It was renamed FSB (Federal Security Service) and don't manage media. We have a bunch of other services to do this work (RosComNadzor - Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications) and they just monitor content to be appropriate: blocking extremist and porn sites and other such things. Cases are passed to FSB only in the case of uncovering some serious extremist organizations.

There are of course some journalist disappearing, being suppressed and other vile things. But none of that is by hand of Federal government, I assure you.
As a rule, if some journalist is prone to seek dirt, he'll be seeking it everywhere. If you look closely at the journalists that were allegedly "disposed of because they were targeting Putin", you'd see that they were investigating mafia, corruption on municipal level and many other things. They had a lot of enemies, but when they are finally murdered, Western and Western-aligned MSM blame their death to Putin personally without any other thought.
 Quoting: Tamonten

Thanks to what factors municipal level corruption flourishing?
If you are not in a "lading"party....cough.... Vlad p...cough....can you even get close to the feeder.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42137517

There is that. I can't argue with the fact that there's a lot of corruption on lower levels. But situation is becoming better with every passing year - with old civil servants retiring, with new more rational and automated systems being integrated.

I can assure you that even close friendship with infamous Surkov (Putin's aide) can't save the businessman if he is a retard. So by now those who still have money and influence are at least competent enough to wield them.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
I’m on GLP for more than a year and quite tired of a bunch of popular misconceptions and myths you people have about my country. That’s aside from clear propaganda and some trolls (or shills – whatever).
So, I’m willing to answer some questions regarding my country to have a page to where direct all the recurring rubbish I encounter here.
As a short summary – I studied history (mostly Japanese though) in university-level college. Before that I was interested in programming. So, I can answer quite a wide variety of questions. Don’t expect however me having a lot of “special” knowledge. There is some of that too, but quite outdated and not that interesting.

BTW, I’m not tolerant at all. I’ll block for excessive swearing and trolling without any hesitation. I’ll answer any questions I can - even if I don’t like them - as long as they are asked politely. Don’t expect to like all of them though.

Do ordinary Russians know that Putin was killed in March, and replaced by a double, or have they been fooled effectively, and believe that the substitute actor is really 'Vladimir Putin'?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69232436

That would be double of a double of a double at least if I believed every "Putin is killed and replaced" rumor going around.
I'm not saying it's not possible at all, but I've yet to see any evidences worth mentioning. Same as with the previous several cases.

As a Blacksmith and minor Historian, I look at cultures by way of their metal work. Russia has a very impressive degree of Blacksmithing in past and even recent history. So my inquiry is in regards to the hammer of your Communist symbol. I have maintained that the hammer depicted is a one of ours, a Blacksmith hammer. Yes?
 Quoting: trueforger

Yeah, the symbolism was of "Union of Peasants and Workers", where sickle represent peasantry and hammer is a symbol of workers - metalworkers above all.
There's a monument in Moscow depicting Worker and Kolkhoz Woman that was originally placed in Paris during the World's Fair [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

OT:
As I see it, one of the main errors of Soviet ideology was disrespect towards mental labor. It sounded like this: "There are classes of workers and peasants and a layer of intelligentsia between them." Interesting fact here, that North Korea ideology integrated intellectuals as a third "class", but they have their own problems too. Because it's fine to proclaim "self sufficiency" when you have a 1/6 of the globe's land, but doing the same on a half of Korean peninsula was a complete stupidity. All the rest - including outright dictatorship and starving population is just a result of that not quite wise decision.

I THINK YOU ARE YOUNG AND FULL OF SHIT

THE SOVIET UNION WAS BASICALLY A HEAVEN FOR ACADEMICS

THE REGULAR PEOPLE GOT TREATED MORE POORLY THAN THE WEST BUT THE ACADEMIC CLASS WAS FAR BETTER TREATED

THE SOVIET UNION WAS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD WHERE IF YOU WANTED TO BE A SCIENTIST THAN YOU WOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE A SCIENTIST

THE ACADEMICS WERE TREATED SO MUCH BETTER THAN IN THE WEST THERE IS NO COMPARISON

PUTIN DESTROYED THE RUSSIAN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

HE DESTROYED RUSSIA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM

HE DESTROYED RUSSIA'S NAVAL INDUSTRY

HE IS DESTROYING RUSSIAN SPACE INDUSTRY

ALL HE KNOWS HOW TO DO IS TO MAKE DEALS WITH BIG OIL AND MINING COMPANIES SO THAT THEY CAN EXTRACT THE GOOD STUFF FROM SIBERIA AND GIVE SOME OF THE PROFITS BACK TO PUTIN

AND ALSO RUSSIA IS NOT HOMOGENOUS

RUSSIA IS VERY HEAVILY MIXED IN SIBERIA THERE ARE TONS OF CHINESE, TONS OF "ASIAN RUSSIANS" PROBABLY 40% OF THE POPULATION ARE ASIAN OF HAVE ASIAN BLOOD

IN OTHER PARTS OF RUSSIA THERE ARE MUSLIMS

RUSSIA IS A DYING COUNTRY LIKE AMERICA, I JUST WANTED TO HELP YOU GUYS FROM AMERICA OUT WITH THE TRUTH

I did some work with the head of Russian private aviation, they told me that in Russia your media just shows Americans loving and praising hussain and also love socialism

Even though that's complete horseshit, would you say that's true?

I had to explain to them that hussain is the worst president ever and when I asked them how they felt about putin even though they were on foreign soil they were afraid to answer the question

It was an awkward moment
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59082744

Some years ago maybe?.. Or were they watching some not quite mainstream media?
I've certainly heard "he's the worst president" notion from TV screen some time ago. We don't know much about internal problems of US, so it's just unnatural to talk too much about how Obama is perceived by Americans.

And about talking with Russians about Putin... I have several solutions to this mystery. The most obvious one is that they were just paranoid.
They also could have been hesitant of either praising him or talking bad of him. Praising your president directly after you've been assured that the man you've talking to despise his is quite not comfortable. And badmouthing your country when talking with foreigner is generally frowned upon. As Pushkin said "Of course, I despise my fatherland from head to toe - but I'm annoyed when a foreigner shares this feeling with me."

I also know for a fact that FSB formally KJB operate on US soil, what do you thank about that?

An agent actually called the police once claiming he had been stabbed but was never found supposedly

One of my old clients was FSB, she was young, beautiful and had everybody fooled but me
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59082744

It's their work. As long as they are working for the sake of the state they are doing fine work, IMO.

Good for you, but that reeks of paranoia...

OP has been called a Russian shill a bunch of times, one thing for certain, things around here Definitely shifted anti American

Hey OP
1. Do you feel like living in cage or you think that you live in free country?
2. Do you miss USSR?
3. Is Putin doing the right thing?

thanks
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69937434

1. I can do everything I wish. I can go anywhere I wish - either for a trip or to live. As far as I see the only thing that limits me is the common sense.
2. I can't miss something that stopped existing while I was still a child. But from what I know, USSR was pretty much horrible place to live... but the only thing that was worse than keeping it afloat was collapsing it. It certainly had no future in the state it was in by the end of 80s, but what Yeltsin and others did - It is worse than a crime, it is a mistake.
3. I believe so. Even if some of his actions are not very clear to me, I believe that general course is the right one.

My wife's family is Russian and have been in the US for 22 years, they have a lot of family still over there and one concern they talk about is the shift towards Russian Orthodoxy. Any opinions on the topic? spasiba tavareesh
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 746107

There is a shift, yeah. And it concerned me for some time too... until I looked closely at the existing alternatives.
Even being somewhat Pagan myself, existing Pagan sects in Russia are of completely retarded variety mostly. At least Orthodoxy doesn't contradict with most of the modern scientific knowledge.
And aggressive atheists I encountered sometimes gave me shivers, I was almost seriously thinking of summoning a priest to perform exorcism.
IMO, if people desire religion - I'd rather it be a good old traditional one. Even if I don't like it.

Will you be able to get back your land from Chinese when 50 year lease over?
Honestly please.
When will we see Russian equivalent of iphone.
Why Russian insulin unsafe for use yet putin banned import of insulin from west?

On land to Chinese:
Nasruddin said that once he had a bet with the Emir of Bukhara, that he will teach his donkey theology so that the donkey will know it not worse than the Emir. All he needed was a purse of gold and twenty years of time. If he does not fulfill the terms of the dispute - he'll lose his head. Nasreddin is not afraid of imminent execution: - "For over twenty years, - he says, - any of the three of us will certainly die - either Emir, or donkey, or I will. And then go and sort out who knew theology better!"
(c) "Disturber of the Peace" by Leonid Solovyov

But seriously - it's a deal between local regional government (government of the state in your terms) and a private company. It's not that Russia leases land to China.
But honestly - I don't know. AFAIK, the deal is not signed still. For now federal government and parliament are quite agitated on the matter and it's still not clear how it goes.
There are a number of scenarios on how this deal will go even if it's finalized. The most important thing here - is how many Chinese will be working on this land. If too many - it could turn into big problem.

On iPhone...
Well, we have YotaPhone. AFAIK, the double-screen know-how is patented and if they'll develop it a bit it could be quite a thing. For now though it's too expensive for its specs.
We have a major disadvantage in all civil technology - it's an undeniable truth. Especially it's true with marketing and branding.

On insulin...
Can't claim that I know too much about insulin matter. I can't even say if the matter of "unsafe insulin" is true or false. But if I assume that it is true...
Putin is the one who signs the decrees - including the import bans. But the ones who prepare such decrees are under much more lax Medvedev's supervision (Ministry of Health). There's also a possibility of corruption - Russian companies that produce insulin are likely to have lobby in MoH. So I revord your question "Why is government corrupt?" and answer it "Because it is run by people."

Does the boy really want to go to Tambov?
 Quoting: Paddy

Nice reference, but I don't know how to answer this question. :)
It's a Russian remake of "Tic Tic Tac" by Carrapicho that likely originated from misheard lyrics, but that's all.

But I hardly can imagine a boy who wants to go to Tambov. Only living association is of a typical response to "tovarish" address from some old movie about criminals (if I'm not mistaken).
"Tovarish!" ("Comrade!")
"Tambobskiy volk tebe tovarish!" ("A wolf from Tambov is your comrade!")

Do Russian men like American woman? I am really attracted to a Russian man I work with.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69118528

Most Russians don't care about citizenship and ethnicity. I don't think that being American is either advantage or disadvantage in this particular case.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Well, I studied Japanese history for a reason. I admire Japanese culture for being consistent through all its history.
I lived in Japan for a whole year in 2013 mostly (October 2012 - October 2013). My favorite place there is Kinki region (Kyoto, Nara, Ise).

 Quoting: Tamonten

I meant to get back to you, but I got lost reading about Japan.

stoner

Anyways, you say you were there in late 2012. How was the country doing after the quake/tsunami the year before?

Was it back to normal or was everyone still trying to clean the whole mess up?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69941115

Japan is a very interesting country with very unique culture and disposition. I'm curious to see if they manage to get rid of excessive American "care" in my lifetime. They've set a direction and moving towards that, but Asian perception of historical time can be quite frustrating.

Well, I lived in Saitama there and visited Kinki Region mostly. Those regions were non affected by the disaster. My friend there went to Sendai several times during 2013, and she was saying that there was quite a lot of unsolved problems still.
But Japanese tend to do everything in orderly manner and I don't believe that any other nation (except Chinese maybe) would have dealt with it better. The only problem they had was that they did not have instructions for the situation they encountered when tsunami submerged the generators. They are bad at improvising.

And why are your women so pretty?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57618158

I can answer that. HEALTH makes BEAUTY.

Their food supply has not been damaged so much by the corporations and Medical Mafia.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

It is not that much about food, but you are right on the health issue.

When I lived there I did not drive a car and would take a 3-5 miles would at least twice a week. Just instead of using public transportation and only every now and then - for fun. This is like if you are being forced to have your workout, even without going to the gym.
