Id like to know alot more about your prospective of Putin and how good of a leader you think he is.
 Quoting: Dumachii

I've already answered this question partly: [link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

I think Putin is as good as we can get at the moment.
It's hard to sum up why I think so. Well, he has an education of KGB agent (which included diplomatical and strategical understanding of situation), an experience in different branches of government, and, above all, he has an aura of a man that knows what he's doing.

Mikhail Yuriev likened Putin to two first Tsars of Romanov dynasty: Mikhail Fyodorovich and Alexey Mikhailovich. They received the country in the state of utter ruin and saved it from the collapse. In his futuristic book "Trird Empire: Russia that should be" he game Putin a nickname "the Rebuilder".

Well, I studied Japanese history for a reason. I admire Japanese culture for being consistent through all its history.
I lived in Japan for a whole year in 2013 mostly (October 2012 - October 2013). My favorite place there is Kinki region (Kyoto, Nara, Ise).

 Quoting: Tamonten

I meant to get back to you, but I got lost reading about Japan.

stoner

Anyways, you say you were there in late 2012. How was the country doing after the quake/tsunami the year before?

Was it back to normal or was everyone still trying to clean the whole mess up?

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Did you know that Russian aristocracy were raised by French tutors and spoke French?

So possibly France is the real power behind Russia?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

There's a joke on this matter:

In 18th century Russians admired France and studied French... and in the beginning of 19th gave a beating to Napoleon.
In the beginning of 20th century Russians studied German... and fought Hitler all the way to Berlin.
Now we are studying English. For the first time in history we have such variety of choises!

But, seriously, Russia was never shy of taking what we thought to be progressive and useful. (Japanese have the same trait, though - but they are more cautious in it)
In 18th century France was still a major power in Europe with colonies all over the world. During Elizaveta Petrovna reign - a military ally of Russia against Prussia. Of course there was some direct influence too, but not as much as you imagined.

There's always some "intellectual" minority in Russian that blame their fate that they were born here. They wish to turn Russia into some addition to "civilized Europe" - of course willing to manage it for their masters. In current terms they are called "Globalists". But they prefer "liberal opposition" name instead. And it doesn't matter which language they prefer...

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
I have a few questions, I have been to Russia a few times and I know quite a bit about the situation, however there are a few things that really puzzle me.

1. Why are Russians so paranoid? I think Russia needs its name changed to Paranoiana.

2. Why is Putin being so expansionistic when there are villages in Russia that still have no basic services like electricity. Does he not understand that NOBODY is going to invade Russia and that if he would turn his attention to making a better life for the Russian people, like roads where the trucks are not axle deep in mud and other basic infrastructure that he could be viewed as the greatest leader Russia ever had?

3. Why does Russia not understand that if they would make their tourist visa procedure easier and not make coming there such a massive pain in the ass that the Russian people would benefit on the order of billions of rubles annually from tourist income?

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Will you be able to get back your land from Chinese when 50 year lease over?
Honestly please.
When will we see Russian equivalent of iphone.
Why Russian insulin unsafe for use yet putin banned import of insulin from west?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42137517

On land to Chinese:
Nasruddin said that once he had a bet with the Emir of Bukhara, that he will teach his donkey theology so that the donkey will know it not worse than the Emir. All he needed was a purse of gold and twenty years of time. If he does not fulfill the terms of the dispute - he'll lose his head. Nasreddin is not afraid of imminent execution: - "For over twenty years, - he says, - any of the three of us will certainly die - either Emir, or donkey, or I will. And then go and sort out who knew theology better!"
(c) "Disturber of the Peace" by Leonid Solovyov

But seriously - it's a deal between local regional government (government of the state in your terms) and a private company. It's not that Russia leases land to China.
But honestly - I don't know. AFAIK, the deal is not signed still. For now federal government and parliament are quite agitated on the matter and it's still not clear how it goes.
There are a number of scenarios on how this deal will go even if it's finalized. The most important thing here - is how many Chinese will be working on this land. If too many - it could turn into big problem.

On iPhone...
Well, we have YotaPhone. AFAIK, the double-screen know-how is patented and if they'll develop it a bit it could be quite a thing. For now though it's too expensive for its specs.
We have a major disadvantage in all civil technology - it's an undeniable truth. Especially it's true with marketing and branding.

On insulin...
Can't claim that I know too much about insulin matter. I can't even say if the matter of "unsafe insulin" is true or false. But if I assume that it is true...
Putin is the one who signs the decrees - including the import bans. But the ones who prepare such decrees are under much more lax Medvedev's supervision (Ministry of Health). There's also a possibility of corruption - Russian companies that produce insulin are likely to have lobby in MoH. So I revord your question "Why is government corrupt?" and answer it "Because it is run by people."

SKS or AK ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69153735

You mean firearms?
I don't like firearms in general, but aren't they of different generations and different purpose? SKS is older and clearly less efficient, so if my life depended on it, I'd chose AK. But I won't use either of them if I can help it.

In general Russian tend to not be very interested in firearms and other such things. We have rather strict arms control. Sometimes ridiculously so.
 Quoting: Tamonten

That's not by accident kiddo, but just for the record, the Russian AK is called the arm of the free world for a reason
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59082744

We just have too many AKs here. And in general - too many arms after WW2 and Cold War which was followed by the "timelessness" period.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26578528

Potato vodka? I don't think it's even sold anywhere in Russia... Legally at least.

IMO, Western (notably US) leaders miscalculated. They thought that Russians have lost our identification with the country and it's history. And for almost a year did not understand that in critical situation Russians still tend to flock to leadership.
Note, how the rhetorics changed: if a year ago they said that all the sanctions were directed against Putin and his friends, now they are already talking about punishing Russia as a whole.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Again, I combine two questions on the same topic:

Are sanctions hurting the Russian people in any way? And why are your women so pretty?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57618158

And why are your women so pretty?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57618158

I can answer that. HEALTH makes BEAUTY.

Their food supply has not been damaged so much by the corporations and Medical Mafia.

However, I am sad to say that if you look into the eyes of a lot of Russian women, you will see a cold heart and anger. At least, I can say that for Russians I've met in USA and Australia.

(And if you look deep into the eyes of a lot of Americans, you will see that nobody is home - again - because of birth trauma, vaccines, toxic foods, smart phones etc.)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Sanctions mostly have hurt our pride. Which was a major mistake of Western leadership. Hurting pride of Russians resulted in major consolidation. (Well, as it is with any country that deserve so be called so)
As a result of Russian counter-sanctions some products disappeared, but were quickly replaced with domestic ones or ones from countries that did not join the sanctions.
Prices climbed up a bit - but it was mostly a result of Ruble devaluation which is in turn a result of oil price going down.

Considering girls...
The ongoing joke here is "we did not have Inquisition in Russia". But yeah, the second poster's notion of more healthy environment is generally true. Also the great mixup of 20th century, when people of completely different regions made families have lessened the imbreading effect.

Not really a question, but I have a note about "coldness" of Russians. We have no custom of "polite smile". Or rather, what we call "polite smile" is a quite sarcastic one with the meaning "you are telling rubbish, but I have not energy to argue with you".
It's mostly the completely different system of face dynamics that the one of European civilization.
For example, Japanese (especially women) have a different mimics too. Almost creepy even for those accustomed to it.

Interesting. So the vids of high school children taking guns apart is propaganda to scare us?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

WOW! There are video's here of 5th graders taking apart and putting AK's back together over and over even blindfolded. Comments on some of the video's make us think it is drilled into all Russian kids and adults.

Well... During USSR times there was a class in school named "Primary Military Training". It was canceled during 90s. Parts of it were reintroduced into "Basics of Life Safety" course in early 00s.
It remained in some schools - mostly in orphanages under MoD jurisdiction. And now it's being reintroduced as a voluntary course. Not anywhere though.

Showing it as an common thing is wrong though. It as close to truth as showing street shooting in US as some everyday occurrence.

As far as I remember, northern regions was a base of last revolt of samurai during late 19th century. But no, I can't confirm your words.
Japan is quite traditional society that retained many aspects of the past. Samurai culture was widespread and there's no evidence that it's generally more preserved in one region than in another.

Did Russians go to the moon? Why does Russia have such crazy characters in their alphabet? What are the 1st thoughts that might come to a Russians mind when they here the word "American"? What does Russia export? I never see any products that say "Made in Russia". What do you hate about Russia? Do you have Buddhists in Russia? Are Russians tolerant of individual spirituality/religions? Was life better for Russians with Czars/Kings?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

Wow. What a variety of questions in a single post...

Did Russians go to the moon?
No, AFAIK. There was a project, but it was suspended after Apollo-11 flight.

Why does Russia have such crazy characters in their alphabet?
Because we have some crazy sounds in our speech obviously. :) Byzantine monks Kirill (hence "Cyrillic") and Mefodiy resigned alphabet for Slavs basing it on Greek one, while Western countries use alphabets based on Roman - Latin - alphabet.
There's a theory though that there was some Slavic alphabet before Kirill and Mefodiy named "Bukvitsa"...

What are the 1st thoughts that might come to a Russians mind when they here the word "American"?
Well... lately it's quite distorted due to recent events, but in general it would have been "typical" American products: jeans, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Hollywood.
If you are asking about people: two contradicting typical images: a fit Schwarzenegger-like movie hero and a comical obese man from Zadornov's (Russian satirist) tales - "I'll have three hamburgers and one diet cola".
Actually there's too many associations at once.

What does Russia export? I never see any products that say "Made in Russia".
We are not very good with consumer's goods as a result of state economy of USSR. Russia exports mostly commodities: oil, natural gas, other raw resources. When we are talking about products of high technological level it's mostly weapons (tanks, fighter jets, surface-to-air missiles, etc.). Also we export liquid-fuel rocket engines - NASA is one of the main buyers.

What do you hate about Russia?
It's quite simple - bureaucracy. It's getting better with time for general population, but for business it's worse with every passing year.

Do you have Buddhists in Russia?
Yes, there are Buddhists in southern regions. When Medvedev was a President he was even proclaimed to be reincarnation of Buddhist deity named White Tara.

Are Russians tolerant of individual spirituality/religions?
For of the time we don't care. All the major confessions are being supported by the state. As I've mentioned previously somewhere on GLP in Moscow you can see mosque, church and a synagogue standing on one plot of land. And Grand Mosque is being built less than a mile from main Armenian Church Cathedral.
As long as your religion doesn't harm anyone and not disturb the public order, you are free do practice it. It does not save from some religious lunatics, but they are a minority.

Was life better for Russians with Czars/Kings?
It depends on how you define better.
Was our life better than life of Europeans under the reign of their kings? Yes. There's a number of evidences.
Was it better before Revolution than after this? Yes, of course. Revolution always a catastrophe.
Was it better then in 30s under Stalin? Can't say for sure. Some lived better, some worse.
Was it better then in 70s? No, it would be ridiculous.
Would have it been better if Russian monarchy was not overthrown and Russia was successfully reformed and modernized without any revolutions? My opinion - yes. But, sadly, it did not happen.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Do you have any thoughts on how Putin avoided persecution when he was KGB?
He is Christian, the KGB did not allow religion.
He said he kept it secret... I say impossible.
Is it possible he is a descendant of Rasputin?
And
Can I immigrate to Russia from Canada?

Thanks for doing this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64902230

Humm... I don't remember him saying so, but still.
I think that at the later years the rule prohibiting religion was not as strict as at the beginning. Also, Putin was in Germany for quite a time, where he could mask his religious activity as a way to blend with locals.

About Rasputin - it's not more possible than him being descendant of Nikolas II. Possible, but is highly unlikely.

About immigration - we don't have any special restrictions, but the first thing is always a language. Also, the fastest way to settle in any country is to find work there. After that the employer takes care of all the papers. Russia is the second (after US) country by the inflow of immigrants - mostly from former Soviet states though.

If HAARP/Chemtrails heat the atmosphere of earth, Russia gains much more arable land. Do you think Russia may be playing a part in the heating of the Arctic region?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

I don't believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theory. Mostly because I know from physics course how contrails are produced.

And about heating northern regions of Russia - I encountered an interesting solution in one book: deepening the sea at the north of Scandinavia to direct Gulf Stream along the Russian Arctic. But it's a faraway perspective even if it's possible.

I’m on GLP for more than a year and quite tired of a bunch of popular misconceptions and myths you people have about my country. That’s aside from clear propaganda and some trolls (or shills – whatever).
So, I’m willing to answer some questions regarding my country to have a page to where direct all the recurring rubbish I encounter here.
As a short summary – I studied history (mostly Japanese though) in university-level college. Before that I was interested in programming. So, I can answer quite a wide variety of questions. Don’t expect however me having a lot of “special” knowledge. There is some of that too, but quite outdated and not that interesting.

BTW, I’m not tolerant at all. I’ll block for excessive swearing and trolling without any hesitation. I’ll answer any questions I can - even if I don’t like them - as long as they are asked politely. Don’t expect to like all of them though.

Is 'hash' smoked in russia.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21996615

It's illegal. But some do.

In your view, is Russia more of a "police state", or the USA?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

Well, I'd like to proudly claim that Russia is more free, but in reality I've never lived in US to be able to compare.
What I can say for sure is that Russian government is not spying on everyone as much NSA and other US agencies do. Not that it don't want to - just not able.
Also I don't see what real liberties or freedoms are repressed here. I often hear that there's a lack of freedom in Russia - but if they try to name what we lack, it's either a complete rubbish or some misconception.

Is Orthodoxy strong in the Moscow area?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33414561

Strong enough. A bunch of churches are being built everywhere. There's even a name for it "churches of walking range".
Lately Orthodox Church is gaining more authority - and of a good kind. Despite Patriarch being quite uncharacteristic one.

Not that it concerns me in any manner - I'm a Pagan of some self-styled type.

I also know for a fact that FSB formally KJB operate on US soil, what do you thank about that?

An agent actually called the police once claiming he had been stabbed but was never found supposedly

One of my old clients was FSB, she was young, beautiful and had everybody fooled but me

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
OP, The U.S. is getting to be a very unfriendly place for older people. 1/6th of the population are Baby Boomers.

Most are starting to retire and seeking to move outside the country for places like south america and Central America. That does not appeal to me in the least. Those nations have made deals where the retired person can still get their Social security checks sent to them in hose countries.

Russia is a very big nation land wise. Russia should find a nice location and build a new city strictly for old retired americans. Many of us like Putin and would flock there. Lots of money to be had for Russia.

What would best describe "Russian character"? I've heard that Russians are "white asians", and that their character is more Asian than European. Is this true? Do Russians identify more with Asia than Europe?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69209391

There's a good text on the matter: [link to cluborlov.blogspot.ru]

There's an addition I borrowed from Mikhail Leontyev's book. Don't know where he took it from though.

Every developed society is pyramidal by definition. There are common people at the bottom, then some minor authorities (police, municipal services), then of higher level (governors), then some central power apparatus (ministries etc.), and some supreme leader at the top. There could be different names, different types of power distribution, but overall concept will always resemble pyramid.
Difference between Western and Eastern model is in how this pyramid is placed.
Western Pyramid is standing firmly on it's base: people endow lower level authorities with their will and it goes as some kind of chain to the top.
Eastern Pyramid is suspended by its top point: people trust the supreme leader and endow him with complete authority over all of them.
That's why it's was ridiculous to pressure Putin's "retinue" to change his opinion by sanctioning them and their businesses. Under our tradition, he could have replaced them with more loyal people with complete public support. That's the part we took from Mongols and Byzantines - the ancient Eastern civilization.
For the rest - we have a complex mixture of Western and Eastern conceptions. Complex enough to consider it a stand-alone Russian mindset different from both characteristical Eastern and Western ones.

There's also another text on the matter of Russian character written by German Sudulayev, that I plan to translate sometime soon. I'll post a link in this thread when it'll be done.
