I will be in Russia for the World Cup, tickets go on sale next year. Do you have access to getting some for the Argentina or U.S. matches for a lesser price?

And if not it would be nice to meet up with some GLPers in your beautiful land.

Thanks brother.

What? I've just suggested a possibility for the people who have interest in what I have to say about my country. I've never pretended to have any universal knowledge - you did.

And, huh. Using a proper punctuation and syntax would have been a good argument to prove your sanity. Pity you don't use it.
As for the rest - you have just basically admitted to being full-blown addict. I don't even need to add anything now.

Well, I was never interested in football actually, so I can't say anything about tickets etc. I'm sure that my older cousin is excited about the whole World Cup matter though.

I would be glad to meet if I'll be free though. Also I can at least give some hints on hotels etc. - from my experience on dealing with tour agencies, it usually cheaper if you know the place and chose the hotels and transportation yourself.

hello o.p

i live in london and have russian neighbours, the type that leave theire house in 3 vehicle convoys of mercedes G wagons (for some reason they get away with blacked out front and rear windows :/)
ive never spoken to them although when i saw 2 guys wearing nice suits stood by the drive gates i waved and said hi but was given a cold stare and a grunt so my question is do all russians see brits as insignificant unless it comes to laundering theire illicit money?

1. Is it true that Russian women don't respect Russian men who don't drink booze? That's what I heard.

2. Do Russian women shave their pits? What about the other body part that starts with the letter P?

3. If I were to open up a Russian ethnic resteraunt in America what would be the top five dishes in the menu?

2. If they expect it to be seen, yeah. Well, as far as I know.

3. Borcht (though it is considered and Ukrainian cuisine), sour creme stew, fried potato (here it is fried a bit differently than what I've tested abroad), shchi (a kind of soup) and pelmeni.

Advertising of alcohol (and tobacco too) is banned in Russia since 2012 (though now ban or advertising of beer is temporary lifted under FIFA requirements). Alcohol is not sold at night. And 90% of Russians support this measures. And general alcohol consumption per person is dropping since then: [link to f5.s.qip.ru]
Structure of alcohol consumption has changed from strong spirits towards less harmful ones, while also dropping in volume: [link to f5.s.qip.ru]

Another usual misconception about Russia.
In 1913 Russia was on 18th place by the alcohol consumption (then there were a bit over 50 countries on the globe of which 20 or so were regarded in this rating, meaning it was next to last place), while France was the leader. Russians consumed about 7 times less alcohol than French per one person.
Russia still consumes less alcohol per person than Britain for example. And governmental policy against alcohol consumption and smoking is quite successful, considering the fact that they are not trying to prohibit it completely. Yet.
Though, our former chief sanitary doctor Onischenko was always saying that the man who consumed a glass of alcohol within last month is drunk and one who did that within last year is a drunkard...

Well, on the spur of the moment the best idea I have is to look at the photos of flats that are rented out: [link to www.domofond.ru]
That's for example. That one link is for Moscow.
And here's Tatarstan: [link to www.domofond.ru]
Russia is very diverse in terms of how people live. Moscow look fancier, but things here cost a lot more.

Note that due to climate and particularities of city development majority of Moscow middle class lives in flats, not in houses or townhouses: it's basically impossible to get to work by car every day and public transportation is ineffective with what we call "private sector", i.e places where people mostly live in separate houses.

Counter-propaganda, Russian Style

By The Saker

May 07, 2016 "Information Clearing House" - "Unz Review" - Listening to the western corporate media one would get the impression that the Kremlin controls all the Russian media with an iron grip and that not a word of criticism of Russia, nevermind Putin himself, is ever allowed. So bad is this situation that the AngloZionists are now funding new “information” efforts to counter-act the Russian propaganda machine and bring some much needed information to the Russian people who clearly do not realize that they are being lied to and deprived from any truthful or even alternative information.

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

First, while some Directorates of the KGB have been renamed and reorganized, the Directorate in charge of dissidents, “other thinkers” and assorted ideological “enemies of the state” (the 5th Main Directorate) has been disbanded completely. So there is no “ideological police in Russia”. Some forms of speech are, indeed, banned – “extremist” speech (terrorism, violence, racism, hate speech, etc.) and some specific organizations, like the Ukrainian “Right Sector” or the Tatar “Mejlis”. Other than that, the only control over speech in Russia is based on criminal charges. So, really, Russia is not unique in that matter at all – she more or less does the exact same as European states.

Second, there is *a lot* of criticism of Putin and the government in general in a very active RuNet (Russian Internet), not only in Russia, but also worldwide (USA, Canada, Kazakhstan, the Ukraine, etc.). Some of the criticism comes from a rather small pro-US minority, but most of it comes from the anti-US camp: nationalists, Communists and critics of the government economic policies all blame Putin for being too weak and unwilling to confront the West frontally. Unlike in the Ukraine, foreign media organizations are not banned, and neither are their broadcasts or newspapers.

Third, most of the Moscow-based “money elite” (I don’t want to call them “intelligentsia”) absolutely loathe Putin and his policies, and they are not shy about speaking their minds about him. If you want to test that hypothesis, just talk to wealthy Russian tourists and you will see that, as a rule, they don’t support Putin at all. And, as we know, “money talks” and a lot of Russian money is most definitely opposed to Putin.

But that does not mean that there is no Russian counter-propaganda at all. There is, and it is very effective. But what makes it unique is the way in which it operates.

I suspect that the fantastically incompetent ways in which the 5th Main Directorate of the KGB worked to try to deal with anti-Soviet feelings has left a deep mark on younger generation of state security officers who have learned from these mistakes and have taken a diametrically opposite course: instead of trying to silencw the western propaganda – they actually actively promote it!

Yup, that’s right. The Kremlin and the clearly pro-Putin journalists go out of their way to give as much air time to the most rabid anti-Kremlin critiques as possible, especially on Russian TV talkshows.

The most popular Russian TV talkshows (Evening with Vladimir Soloviev, Time will Show with Petr Tolstoi, Right to Know with Dmitrii Kulikov, Politics with Petr Tolstoi and Alexander Gordon, Special Correspondent with Evgenii Popov, News.doc with Olga Skabeeva, Duel with Vladimir Soloviev) all make sure that the following groups get as much airtime as possible:

1. Russian liberals
2. Russian-speaking American journalists
3. Russian-speaking Polish officials and journalists
4. Ukrainian nationalists

These four groups are literally the “bread and butter” of these talkshows were they provide a constant stream of very entertaining political debates. Why? Because they utter the exact same nonsense which they are used to proclaim in their own countries and if the western audience does not really know what to make of this propaganda, it sounds so outlandish to the Russian audience that these guests always get completely eviscerated (verbally, of course) by the Russian guests invited to the same talk show.

Playlist of all songs uploaded by now: [link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

This is a recording of a concert that was held on the Red Square a year ago. I do believe that this particular concert may be among the best quick sneak peeks into Russian history and culture for those who may be interested a bit, but grows bored from long explanations.
Not to mention that the music is greet.

But it's quite useless, unless you understand what's being said, since the concert itself and the song used in it are plot-driven.

I've been making a of it translation song by song on my spare time for almost a year now. Now I'm planning to upload and post it same way - a song (or verses or other type of episode, since the concert has many different types of compositions in it).

Though, I will be asking for some minor help:
while I've been able to find proper translations for some of that songs, most of them doesn't have on. So, I've been forced to interpret them myself.
Though I'm usually quite confident that I'm able to translate into English and not be misunderstood, songs and verses (as well as lengthy texts) make me insecure about my skill.

So, I'll be posting a translation of the next song each time when I was the one translating it and waiting for some native speaker to proofread it before encoding and posting actual video.

Are stores well stocked in Russia? Lots of capitalist variety?

Is it easy to buy a house and make a life in Russia?

Is there much social mobility in Russia?

I've never had any problems finding what I need or want. Strictly speaking, I live pretty close to Moscow so it should not be a good argument, but I know many people who either came to Moscow from deep province or are traveling regularly across the country - and they don't see big differences in the availability of consumer goods. Though, Moscow surely have a higher variety of high-class elite-oriented goods - like any other capital out there, I believe.
There are some nuances, since some Western countries either retreated due to government pressure in their countries or since the introduction of counter-sanctions - but all the niches are quickly taken by Easten brands and suppliers of the same quality. For example, when Western-made cars-makers started to close their shops in Russia, Japanese and Korean ones made everything possible to take the market from them. Same for fruits and vegetables.

Well, making a life always depends on your education and profession. I'd say that those who really want to work have no problems here. There's likely to be high demand on engineering and manufacturing professions soon, since they were very low-rated during last 20 years or so. Now older generation professionals are retiring with no one to replace them with. We have far to many poorly-educated economists, managers and advocates though.
As for buying a house or a plot of land it greatly depends on the region. Moscow and Moscow region are ridiculously costly in this aspect. And it's far easier in the province. Though, salaries there are lower too.

I'd say that there is social mobility, but it's still quite unstable. You can't guarantee that someone with good prospects will be able to realize them. Our "liberals" tend to liken government system to Soviet one, but it's clearly nothing close. Not in this aspect for sure.

For your own consumption you can even distill if you want to. But if you want to make money with it you'll have to license it.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Do Russian citizens perceive the actions of the US/NATO as a serious threat?

If so, why do they think the US/NATO are doing it?

Is Russian civilization/culture strong enough to hold together and resist what the US/NATO are doing?

Is the Berlin-Moscow-Beijing alignment as stated by P. Escobar recognized in Russia as a credible goal?
