Hi Tamonten...

1. Do a lot of Russian's believe in aliens/ufo's?

2. What's the most favorite conspiracy theory in Russia

3. How much does a subwayticket cost in Moscow?

4. Do you think Lenin should be burried or kept as a display mummy?

5. What's the generell view on Germans?

BTW.. I think there is more freedom of speech in Russia today than their is in the entire EU as we are run by a bunch of weirdo liberal "political-correctness" cunts.

Hi!

1. Quite a number I'd say. Mostly because after the general materialistic upbringing of Soviet era people would generally rather believe in some scientific thing than in mystical. But actually, you can find a bunch of people believing in just everything now. Though, it's less wild now, than it was in 90s.

2. Well, I can say for sure which ones are not even considered. Whole "chemtrails", "flat earth" etc. things are debunked just by having a full high school course of physics - we have a college-worth of it by the end of 11th grade. Lately the most popular one would be "Russia is the most ancient nation on the globe, but elites are hiding the proofs from us" thing. Quite ridiculous actually.

3. Meh. I did not use it for several years now, since I live 15 kilometers from city proper and mostly use car to get somewhere. Official site says 32 rubles - 0.43 euro. With one ticket you can ride even all day long as far as you don't leave the subway.

4. My personal opinion is that not only Lenin, but the whole necropolis of the Kremlin Wall should be with all due respect moved to some special memorial park designed to glorify the Soviet era. Maybe even inside of the same Kremlin wall, I don't know.
I personally don't like Lenin at all. If there is someone who should have been kept as a "living" monument it should have been Stalin, the true founder of the SU.
Some of those people are great, many are criminals, but they are a part of our history. But - having a graveyard at our main square is just sick. IMO.

5. Not a thing against common Germans, a lot to say about frau Merkel and elites in general. But mostly I just agree with Pyotr Durnovo from 100 years ago - Germany is a natural ally of Russia and feuds between us are a calamity for both of our nations. [link to novaonline.nvcc.edu]

Well, sometimes I wonder if we have a little too much of this freedom. When I see govenment- and state corporation founded media (such as "Echo Moskvi", "Dozhd" etc. etc.) talking dirty about my country and its people I almost wish for some healthy measure of censorship...

if you find the time .. then

let me know how the average russian thinks about the refugee crisis in EU and also what russians think about Merkel's open door policy.. and how the press is reporting on this issue.

Where do Russians prefer to go on holidays these days?

And what do Russians on average think of Donald Trump?

I've read about the Siberia-Alaska bridging/tunnel project and that Putin recently gave the green light for this project and allocated $65 billion for it.. do you think it is feasable? Is there even an american leadership that would take advantage of such a great opportunity?

Actually I bet that Russians do like anyone else more than your average Westerner. At least we don't try to force everyone into our paradigm anymore.
Russians may seem to be unfriendly, but that's an illusion mostly.

As for Cuba... Well, there's nostalgic friendly attitude. And among those who are more aware of international matters a measure of guilt for abandoning all the allies during 90s...

You are welcome.

Well, I can't say for typical Russians, but our experts are mostly shocked how foolishly Western leadership is acting. So is the press.
It's not even about the influx that is happening now, but about the general lack of will to do something really effective to integrate even the old waves of migrants into society.
For now it reminds us of Fall of Rome. When old Roman Empire became too self-indulgent to protect itself and invited barbarians into its proper. After a hundred years or so there was nothing left of once great civilization.
Here's one good commentary of the Russian expert on this matter: [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Though he is of Jewish descent, it doesn't make him less Russian, even if with some typical Jewish traits.

As for holidays... Previously Egypt and Turkey were the most popular destinations, but they are closed now. I'd guess, Balkans (a relatively calm part of it), South-East Asia (Thailand mostly) and Crimea should be the most popular destinations now. I personally prefer Cyprus (been there 7 or 8 times), but it's more expensive than the rest I listed.

Well, about Donald Trump, I'll just quote one answer I've given on this matter on some other thread:
It's not my place to talk, since I'm another country's citizen, but I believe that I have the right to comment on human qualities at least, since it's quite universal thing around the globe.

The only one who actually sounds like a real human being with a heart and some cojones

About Alaska-Chukotka tunnel... I don't believe it's possible until the whole mess with Ukraine is settled down. Our first priority now is to build Crimean Bridge. And until US stops acting stupid and recognizes that Crimea is Russian. I'd guess it'll either happen after some major military conflict or after 20 or so years at least.

how are the laws towards marijuana?
penaltys and such?
and is there any progress in regards to that?

Nah, still illegal here. And not likely to be legalized.
As for penalties... Did not encounter any of that in my life, so I've now looking at the criminal code as I write this answer.
[link to www.narkotiki.ru]

CC 151: Involving a minor into anti-social activities (such as alcoholism, drug addiction, begging etc.) by an adult - 180-240 hours of forced labor OR 1-2 years corrective labor OR 3-6 years of arrest OR up to 4 years of imprisonment.
The same thing done by teacher, parent or another educator - up to 3 years of custodial restraint OR 4-6 months of arrest OR up to 5 years of imprisonment - WITH a prohibition to be employed as a teacher etc for up to 3 years - or without it.
The same thing done using violence or treats of violence - up to 6 years of imprisonment.

CC 188: Contraband of prohibited goods - 3-7 years of imprisonment - WITH a fine of up to 1000000 rubles OR in the size of up to 5 years of income - or without it.
The same thing done by the official or by treating or attacking official - 5-10 years of imprisonment - WITH a fine of up to 1000000 rubles, or in the size of up to 5 years of income - or without it.
The same thing done by the organized group of people - 7-12 years of imprisonment - WITH a fine of up to 1000000 rubles OR in the size of up to 5 years of income - or without it.

CC 228: illegal buying, selling, keeping, transporting, manufacturing or processing of illegal narcotic drugs - fine of up to 40000 rubles OR in the size of up to 3 months of income OR up to 2 years of corrective labor OR up to 3 years of imprisonment.
The same thing in a very big scale - 3-6 years of imprisonment - WITH a fine of up to 500000 rubles, or in the size of up to 3 years of income - or without it.

I'm too lazy to translate the rest of it, but you can see the gist I think.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Pozdrav Tamonten!

One thing I always wanted to know about Russians is their attitude when dealing with smaller nations in civil sphere not politics. I mean we never were under Soviet influence in Yugoslavia/less interaction, so I want know more about working men or middle class Russians, when they are large/strong community in neighboring countries. What's the attitude?

I'll give you an example..when Serbs(and I love them to death but its true), immigrated to neighboring states in Yugo, they played superiority game..didnt learn our language we had to speak theirs in our homes, that's one example but it was commie times, so nothing made sense back then.

So how is it in let's say Lithuania or any Balt state for that matter? I know Balts give your minority a hard time but where does it come from-the hate? What is the reputation of Russian minority there and more important what is their attitude towards Lithuanian state or its people? Do they recognize it as their country? Did they learned the language? We got Serbs living in Slovenia for 40 years and they don't know a word of Slovene.
 Quoting: tyash

It's a rather complex question actually. Mostly because if I try to answer briefly I'll make my people look bad, but if I answer to the full extent I will seem as one going over the board.

Short answer is - yes, Russians behaved (and still behave) much like you described. But that's just the part of the truth.
The other side of the coin is:
1. For the majority of minor ethnicities living in SU (there are close to 100 still left in Russia even after losing 1/3 of territory after SU collapse) writing systems and a proper systematization of languages were made by Russian (be it Imperial or Soviet) scholars.
2. During first 20 or so years of Soviet part of our history government had so-called "nativization" as a part of its official policy - Russian-speaking people of freshly formed "ethnic republics" were forced to learn local languages and use them.
3. Russian language is de facto "lingua franco" of the lands that one belonged to the Russian Empire and Soviet Union: even if Russians were actually able to learn every language of every ethnicity forming this region, it's still more effective for natives to learn Russian.
4. Both in Soviet Union and now there are regions that have their own languages as state languages of their republics within Federation. Fore example, Crimea decided to keep Ukrainian as one of its languages and adding Crimean Tatar language to the list - a thing which was unthinkable during Ukrainian period of its history. Now Crimean Tatars can demand and actually get civil services on their native language.

Actually, a complex language policy along with many other things are a characteristic of Empire. It's not a simple thing to develop system that is both stable enough and not too suppressing. And, from my knowledge, even if SU was worse in that than the Russian Empire, even SU was better than most of Western countries are managing.

I’m on GLP for more than a year and quite tired of a bunch of popular misconceptions and myths you people have about my country. That’s aside from clear propaganda and some trolls (or shills – whatever).
So, I’m willing to answer some questions regarding my country to have a page to where direct all the recurring rubbish I encounter here.

Not really.
Actually it was Russia copying many Prussian ideas such as military uniform and regulations.
As well as Prussia had a good chance to become a part of Russian Empire at some point. Part of it even was - during 7 years war in later Elizabeth I of Russia times East Prussia was already a part of Russia, and only Empress's sudden death and a short-termed reign of her nephew Peter III (half a year or so) prevented all of it from becoming Russian domain.

But, huh. In Russian "Russia" and "Prussia" doesn't even sound close enough to each other.

Either that, or they were trying and failing to come up with a limerick.

Well, Russia in Russian sounds "Rossiya". Basically "Rossiya" means "Lands of Russ'", because the region of modern f.Ukraine (northern part of it mostly), Belarus and European part of Russian were known as "Small Rus'", "White Rus'" and "Great Rus'" respectively - only Belarus has retained its historical name. Also there was "Red Rus'" at what is now Western f.Ukraine.
By the 16th century Great Rus's political center was established in Moscow and at the same time Knyaz (closest Western title may be Archduke, while it's usually translated as "Prince") of Moscow's official title has become "A master of all of Rus'". Later it was changed to "Master of all Great, Small and White Rus'"
The term "Rossiya" appeared somewhere in that period to define the country. Later, during Peter I the Great reign official name was changed into "Russian Empire" - "Rossiyskaya Imperiya" - basically "Empire of Russia".

I suppose the spelling "Russia" comes from combining historical "Rus'" with new suffix.

But actually in Russian there's a bunch of countries that are named in the same manner:
England - "Angliya"
France - "Franciya"
Germany - "Germaniya"

But there was another country with similar name - Yugoslavia, which basically means "Land of Southern Slavs".

Returning to Prussian matter though, Prussians were originally of Baltic origin, making them close relatives of Slavs. Even the languages of Slavic and Baltic families are regarded as closest relatives.
Oh, and here's another two similar country names - Estonia and Latvia.

If it's about the general lack of optimism and a habit of seeking each and every bad thing around them, it may be the overdose of Russian classical literature. It's quite grim most of the time.

It's just your personal opinion.
If you ask me, I'd rather make those regulations even more strict.
We have too many people dying of drug addiction. Especially since US entered Afghanistan and drug production there skyrocketed.

marijuana is directly tied to the old gnostic religion that christianity came from, and mushrooms as well.Ever read john marco allegro? sacred mushroom and the cross, what about siberian shamans? what happenrd when orthodox church came ? they burned the gnostic books! so they can assert themselfs of course. They created islam as well...and everything revolves around that story now...and you instead of researching it wants to ban it because of some other drug thats being abused...There will never be real progress unless the truth is out.

Doesn't really matter.
I don't see a big difference between different types of substances that make you lose yourself unless there's a proper guidance to find something greater in exchange.
For better or worse in our civilization this knowledge is lost and indulging into narcotics will do nothing to restore that practices.

Re: I'm Russian – ask me a question. Be it about Russia or a personal one.
Hey,

I'm swedish. We got some kind of bad reputation going on holidays getting shitfaced messing around, at least being young doing it. I've seen it so partly it's true and I will not deny it.

Anyhow, I went to Egypt lots of years ago, and this all inclusive hotel personell said they were happy to have swedes there. And said they really had problems with russians in general. After a few days I could see why.

I'm not saying that everyone there did this but stuff happened all the time each day. For instance:

- being rude to service, grabbing stuff without civil behaviour in food lines
- shouting and screaming at the service staff for no real reason
- being loud and without respect for people
- dropping trash all over the place
- getting over the top drunk

All in all I did not have much problem with it personally, but if I was working in the hotel I really would be bothered.

Is this something that just happened on this hotel, or more general?

Best wishes

Not sure how to comment it, but I will.
In Russia you would have been swiftly fined under the law prohibiting advertising of narcotics - 20 to 25 of minimal wages (6204 rubles) - 1915 to 2394 USD.
And justly so, IMO.

Actually, it's a pity that my account is not upgraded now. Usually there is "Evil Russian Imperialist" written under my nickname. It should tell things to your type.

I don't want to repeat those ages of trial and error that shamans of old has passed before they became able to take more good from the natural stimulants than there is evil caused by them to their bodies and psyche. And I'll gladly learn from any real practicer if I meet one. But that's all.

Well, there are several factors in play here.

For starters, I must ask how long ago has it happened? Because typical Russian tourist has changed several times since the border was opened. In 90s for example many of those who were going outside of Russia for a trip had quite questionable income sources. Actually, there was a typical special service at the tour agencies - "to find a hotel with next to nothing Russians" - for those Russians who were uncomfortable with living in the same hotel with criminals.
Also, I for once have never been on "all inclusive" service, though I've been to at least 7 countries. In Russia at least people who are buying such tours are usually doing it for the "all you can drink" bar, not for anything else. The rest are usually people who want to have beach trip without care - they don't even go outside the hotel if they can help it.
Another reason is that Egypt was always the most cheap foreign country for Russians. It's likely that you've mostly encountered the worst kind of Russians you can encounter outside Russia. Lest educated, lest well-behaved etc. etc. Not to mention that regular alcohol consumption on the resort can not make anyone's behavior better for sure.

Advertising it to me is useless. I've had one of my closest friends doing the same, but we came to the mutual conclusion than I don't need it. For reasons.
