SKS or AK ?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69153735

You mean firearms?
I don't like firearms in general, but aren't they of different generations and different purpose? SKS is older and clearly less efficient, so if my life depended on it, I'd chose AK. But I won't use either of them if I can help it.

In general Russian tend to not be very interested in firearms and other such things. We have rather strict arms control. Sometimes ridiculously so.
 Quoting: Tamonten

Interesting. So the vids of high school children taking guns apart is propaganda to scare us?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

WOW! There are video's here of 5th graders taking apart and putting AK's back together over and over even blindfolded. Comments on some of the video's make us think it is drilled into all Russian kids and adults.

making kids familiar with firearms in a safe enviorment is a good idea. makes a lot more sense than teaching them that little billy can be a girl if he feels like it.

Do you drink Vodka?
 Quoting: ColdTrifecta

Actually, I've stopped drinking alcohol completely almost exactly a year ago. I use driving as a pretext if I'm asked, but in reality I just don't like the feeling of being drunk. Also, having a drunkard uncle discourages from following his steps.

Russians in general do. But not as much as it may seem even from our own movies. Vodka (especially counterfeit one) is the most "efficient alcohol" you can get - when you just want to forget something with the lowest possible price. That's why vodka alcoholism was a major problem during 80s and 90s, when life was downright horrible for the most of the population. It's still popular where life level is lower, but less so with every passing year.

As of now, the most popular drink is beer I think. My parents usually drink either beer or wine. Father likes Armenian cognac. Vodka is perceived by them as a medicine - either from minor cold or from stress.

Do you enjoy a borscht made of a animal stock, or vegetarian more?
With or without sour cream & fresh dill?
 Quoting: M1.618

I can't claim that I ever even tasted vegetarian borscht. Rather, I can't even imagine it. Classical borscht is made using very fat broth and I can't even start to think how to replace it.

Personally I don't like soups in general and our family have moved towards more healthy cuisines several years ago (too much fat in borscht after all), but yeah, sour cream and fresh dill is a must.

Did Russians go to the moon? Why does Russia have such crazy characters in their alphabet? What are the 1st thoughts that might come to a Russians mind when they here the word "American"? What does Russia export? I never see any products that say "Made in Russia". What do you hate about Russia? Do you have Buddhists in Russia? Are Russians tolerant of individual spirituality/religions? Was life better for Russians with Czars/Kings?

Do you have any thoughts on how Putin avoided persecution when he was KGB?
He is Christian, the KGB did not allow religion.
He said he kept it secret... I say impossible.
Is it possible he is a descendant of Rasputin?
And
Can I immigrate to Russia from Canada?

Thanks for doing this.

As a Blacksmith and minor Historian, I look at cultures by way of their metal work. Russia has a very impressive degree of Blacksmithing in past and even recent history. So my inquiry is in regards to the hammer of your Communist symbol. I have maintained that the hammer depicted is a one of ours, a Blacksmith hammer. Yes?
 Quoting: trueforger

Yeah, the symbolism was of "Union of Peasants and Workers", where sickle represent peasantry and hammer is a symbol of workers - metalworkers above all.
There's a monument in Moscow depicting Worker and Kolkhoz Woman that was originally placed in Paris during the World's Fair [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

OT:
As I see it, one of the main errors of Soviet ideology was disrespect towards mental labor. It sounded like this: "There are classes of workers and peasants and a layer of intelligentsia between them." Interesting fact here, that North Korea ideology integrated intellectuals as a third "class", but they have their own problems too. Because it's fine to proclaim "self sufficiency" when you have a 1/6 of the globe's land, but doing the same on a half of Korean peninsula was a complete stupidity. All the rest - including outright dictatorship and starving population is just a result of that not quite wise decision.

silly question here. who came up with city signs in front of Russian and Ukrainian cities?

example:

[link to upload.wikimedia.org (secure)]

I saw huge signs like this in most Ukrainian cities while watching footage. I like it.
 Quoting: Matjaz

That's the thing I don't know for sure.
Quick trivia search resulted in nothing too.
But I think that Moscow, St. Petersburg and some other big cities had such ornate signs even before 1917, and then Soviet architectors imitated it and made it into tradition.

Here's a search of such signs.

In Russia, the people see the propaganda on TV/news, but they laugh at it, because it is so crude. But in the USA, people watch the propaganda on TV/news, and they fully believe in it, because it done so much more professionally. Would you agree, disagree, or have no opinion?

Is the KGB still as much in control of free speech as before?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Here's one of the recurring misconceptions which made me to create this thread...

For once, there's no KGB now. It was renamed FSB (Federal Security Service) and don't manage media. We have a bunch of other services to do this work (RosComNadzor - Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications) and they just monitor content to be appropriate: blocking extremist and porn sites and other such things. Cases are passed to FSB only in the case of uncovering some serious extremist organizations.

There are of course some journalist disappearing, being suppressed and other vile things. But none of that is by hand of Federal government, I assure you.
As a rule, if some journalist is prone to seek dirt, he'll be seeking it everywhere. If you look closely at the journalists that were allegedly "disposed of because they were targeting Putin", you'd see that they were investigating mafia, corruption on municipal level and many other things. They had a lot of enemies, but when they are finally murdered, Western and Western-aligned MSM blame their death to Putin personally without any other thought.

I can personally confirm, having spent 20+ years in lawsuits against govt officials in the USA, that Russian corruption can't be worse than the corruption in the USA. At least, it would be impossible, because every level of American politics and corporate policies are driven by it, eg, "behind the scenes" operations that operate with complete disregard to law, and without any fear of law - because all of the judges are corrupt and bought. In the USA, the mafia IS the government, but most all Americans are blind to it. The mafia in the USA didn't disappear, they just decided government and government subcontracting to be a more lucrative racket.

Well, in general Russians don't see any difference between different states of US. Most of us has never encountered any US citizens - let alone from different states. Just like most of Americans can't differentiate between people from Moscow, St. Petersburg and, let's say, Tomsk or Vladivostok.
Those who can claim some knowledge about US tend to have more sympathy towards South with its more traditional standing.

As a rule we tend to differentiate between government and people most of the time. Here's Dugin's insight on Russian disposition towards US and Americans: [link to klou.tt] He's not quite mainstream, but in this particular case he's right.
 Quoting: Tamonten

Thanks for this link: [link to klou.tt]

It's always interesting to me to read an individuals' historical account as opposed to state-approved history.

I'd like to think most educated folks around the world are able to differentiate between the US Government and its people.

Do you and/or mainstream Russians in General feel the USA Gov't was/is behind all the 'colour' revolutions?
We all breathe the same air.

Even though that's complete horseshit, would you say that's true?

I had to explain to them that hussain is the worst president ever and when I asked them how they felt about putin even though they were on foreign soil they were afraid to answer the question

I'll combine answer to this two questions into one because they are similar.

do you like putin as your president ? what is your opinion about oligarchs, they should be shot dead or not ? do you drink alcohol ? :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69700313

How do Russians feel about Putin? Obama?

Do you like Vodka, if so, what is your favorite?
 Quoting: Kraut

I've already answered about vodka and alcohol in general here: [link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

As for the rest...
Oligarchs are now mostly stripped of the power they had at the 90s. Putin used Khodorkovskiy (who clearly lost it thinking that he can buy everything and everyone just because he had enough money - stolen money I should note) as an example, resulting into quite ridiculous behavior sometimes. There was a story with Vekselberg and his Faberge Eggs, Abramovich who became governor of Chukotka and some other such things... Now they are the necessary evil. They have next to nothing political influence and that's it.
The problem here is that "cleansing" the top won't help: you could replace them only with other people of the same kind. The only difference is that if current ones are already full, new ones would be starved, resulting into another tour of what we call "peredel" ("redistribution [of property]"). And one peredel was quite enough for us.

About Obama and Putin...
I'll begin from my (and my family's) voting history.
During 90s my parents voted for Yeltsin mostly because alternative was even worse. In 00s they stopped voting because everything was stable and everyone just wanted to enjoy it. Also - Putin had a clear impenetrable majority. The same majority elected Medvedev on inertia of Putin's approval. In 2011, when Parlamentary elections were proclaimed to be rigged by the opposition (mostly people who were in power during 90s and are unpopular among the general population for this very reason). Fun fact here is that the result of so called "Bolotniy process" (protests on Bolotnaya square not far from Kremlin) was quite opposite: people who stopped voting long ago, but remembered 90s and what those people done while being in power, made their way to the voting booths and elected Putin with overwhelming majority. My family as a fine example: non went on 2008 elections and everyone voted for Putin in 2012.

About current Putin's policy...
According to Levada public opinion monitoring center, Putin have an approval rate of 89%. That's considering the fact that Levada is pro-Western entity.
Of course not everything is perfect here. But there's an interesting division in Russian politics and minds. Our government is divided onto two parts: Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs are subjected directly to the President and people mostly approve of their work. But other Ministries - of Welfare, of Education and Science, of Transportation etc. are under Prime Minister Medvedev jurisdiction and are often criticized for inefficiency, corruption and other things. Not that there's no corruption in police for example, but here the old Russian principle "Tsar is good, but retinue is vile" is working.
The general rule is - if Putin is monitoring something personally, it works. Part of it is his personal charisma and competence, another part is the aura of supreme leader even Yeltsin and Gorbachov had despite all their numerous faults.

About Obama...
Well... it's unclear how to describe a public Russian opinion about him with polite terms. The most brief explanation would be this one: [link to klou.tt] "Obama is a schmuck".
My personal opinion is that he, as the vast majority of Western democratically elected leaders, is out of his league. He would be nice notary somewhere. Just like I can easily picture Hollande working in a library, and Merkel - in some bank in the province.
The problems with western democracy as it is now is that it gives the best chances to mediocrity. Actually it was the same with late-Soviet higher-ups.

Picked several personal questions that are easy to answer:

Are you male or female?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51892828

Male. Not quite what you imagine if you think of Russian man though. My avatar is my stylized portrait.

English seems too good to be a Russian.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69086635

Well, thanks.
I think that studying it for 9 years in school, for 3 years in college and reading quite a bunch of English books had some result. But I really started to use English in conversation only when I came to GLP. Not counting brief trips abroad of course.

What is your favorite place to visit, either in your home country or abroad?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69939941

Well, I studied Japanese history for a reason. I admire Japanese culture for being consistent through all its history.
I lived in Japan for a whole year in 2013 mostly (October 2012 - October 2013). My favorite place there is Kinki region (Kyoto, Nara, Ise).
In Russia I visited all the old cities of central region during late 90s, but they are to common to me to distinguish one or two.
