Re: Snake Bite Stories
When I was a teenager a few friends and I were walking along a wash. We came upon a large cut out in the bend of the wash. We decided to check it out since a lot of time stuff that get washed down during a heavy storm will accumulate in areas like this. We ventured into this cut out approximately 15-20 feet when all of a sudden one of my friends screamed a blood curdling scream! We all took off running as fast as we could. As we exited we were all laughing and joking. My friend kept saying he got bit by something. He removed his shoes and dropped his pants to reveal 2 small puncture wounds just below his knee. We knew right away it was a snake bite since a lot of our cattle or horses would have the same bite. By the time we got him to his house he was in extreme pain and his knee had already swollen to twice its size. His parents rushed him to the Dr. where they were told it was a rattlesnake bite. He spent a few days in the hospital but eventually recovered fully.
What makes the story great is the fact my father and the boys father wanted to see where he got bit at. We took them to the spot and after about 20 seconds upon entering the cut out. We heard them open up with their 12ga shot guns. Came out, grab a box of shells and then blasted some more. After about ten minutes my dad came out with 7 or so rattle snakes. All said and done I wanna say it was about 40-50 they killed. We just happened upon a den of them. CRAZY SHIT! We did spend about 4 hours skinning snakes. Good shit to eat especially if smoked.

Re: Snake Bite Stories
My nephew was bitten by a 6' plus eastern diamond back rattlesnake in North Florida woods. He was 13 years old and he and his cousin went during a summer day to go fishing in a pond that was about a mile back in the woods. They saw a new deer stand on the way and Alex ran to climb up first, he stepped on some plywood and saw the snake at the same time it bit him in the upper calf just above his snake boot! The force of the bite knocked him back on the ground. He said he tasted a metallic taste immediately. They bgen the walk back and within a few minutes he was hardly able to walk. Alex had a cell phone, they called 911 and stayed on the phone with the operator until able to make it home with his cousin dragging him most of the way.

By the time they made it home, the ambulance and county sherriff were there and took him to the little high school nearby. He was airlifted to Tallahassee where he stayed in intensive care for 2 weeks. He received more antivenin at the time than had ever been given. It was brought in from all over the country and eventually south America. He almost died. It was terrible.

He survived, he has some paralysis from damage to the tendon. Snake hunters from all over the south looked for the snake, because from the fang width and venom it was assumed to be a 6 to 7 foot female. They need this kind of snake to milk to keep antivenin supplies.

The cost of the antivenin exceeded 100,000 dollars. Insurance paid. The sherriff gave my sister a copy of the 911 call. They gave the cousin a hero award for saving my nephew's life.

And he doesn't go in the woods in the summer anymore.

Re: Snake Bite Stories
in cases of a venomous bite, first thing to do is electrically neutralize the venom. if a car battery and jumper cables are readily present, touch together both positive and negative leads to the wound site. the electrical voltage will break down the venom.

disclaimer: make sure you...re not all wet.

Re: Snake Bite Stories
When I was around 5 or 6 my brother and I were playing outside in the front yard throwing a tennis ball.

He threw it low and it rolled in between my legs and just up and over a row of monkey grass outlining an area with bushes. I could see the top of the tennis ball sitting there.

When i reached down and grabbed it I felt something strike my hand almost like several bees striking at once, I immediately started to pull my hand back but got bit a second time. As soon as I pulled my hand back I saw what bit me.

My dad was out back cutting grass and my mom was inside, upstairs, taking a shower. Both heard the unearthly scream and ran to my location. I described what bit me, they quickly loaded us up and we went to the hospital.

I was lucky, the first bit the 2 fangs landed right on top of the bones in my hand and was unable to sink its teeth in very far, because of this and the fact I immediately pulled my hand back may have saved me. Its second bite was unable to deliver enough venom to require AV.

Everyone had come to the conclusion from my description of what I saw it was either a baby rattlesnake or a copperhead/cotton mouth.

I always thought copperheads and cotton mouths were the same thing, I learned something new today.

That's a really cool story! And yes, I've only had rattlesnake and it is delicious. Tastes like chicken.

I had a rattlesnake "den" experience once too on an old deer lease out near Palo Pinto. I was only about 8 at the time. My step mom and I had climbed a tall hill while exploring and decided to rest on a huge rock about half way up. While sitting on the rock, we kept hearing this strange rattling (which we assumed was my BB gun I carried everywhere). Nothing happened, but when we got back down we told the rancher our story and he had this ominous look on his face. He asked which rock and we pointed it out. He preceded to tell us that under that particular rock was home to the largest den of rattlesnakes on his property. He said he killed half a dozen snakes a week around there. Which made complete sense after he told us, cause I knew I was almost out of BBs...

Wow, what a terrifying experience!! So glad to hear everything turned out alright. That's right up there with true grit for bad rattlesnake bite stories. Do you know how much anti-venom they actually had to use? What year was it that it happened?

Re: Snake Bite Stories
I was walking a pond on a ranch in southern Oklahoma. The ranch is in the Arbuckle Mountains. This ranch is loaded with huge rattlesnakes, copperheads and a few water moccasins. I used to kill at least 6 copperheads around my house every year. My dog found most of them. She is Scottish terrier and had a certain bark that she had when she found a copperhead.

Anyway, the day I was fishing, I walked past some weeds and heard something rustling in the grass. I just walked past. As I was standing on the bank, A HUGE water moccasin crawled out from where I had just walked and slithered in to the water. I have seen MANY water snakes in my time, but this was the one and only moccasin I had ever seen. UGLY MF. It hissed at me as it left the bank and the hair on my neck stood straight out.

Another time, I walked out to my truck about dusk and saw what looked like a stick laying between my truck and the yard. My lab came over and got between me and the "stick" and then I heard a rattle. Scared the shit out of the dog. She jumped and ran off. I walked around my truck and got my shotgun and blew that snakes head off. Skinned it too and tanned the hide. It was about a five footer.

Oh and I am a 57 year old woman. I'm a tough old broad.

And the weirdest part of that story to me was so could the Pharaoh's magicians. I know Moses's snake ate theirs, but it always gave me the creeps that they could do it too.

I've heard the number of snake bite deaths in the US rarely exceeds ten, annually.

That number always perplexed me because I've personally known almost that many who died locally from timber rattler bites through the years.

Seriously...

Re: Snake Bite Stories
Learned something about rattlesnakes recently that I would never have imagined!

An acquaintance skinned a large rattler someone else had killed with the intention of making a belt. Though the snake was already dead, he carefully cut off the head and disposed of it properly prior to skinning.

A couple of days later he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. For two weeks the doctors were flummoxed! Nothing helped and his body seemed to be 'shutting down'. After a multitude of tests (many left-field, stabs in the dark, wtf IS this) the doctor asks if he had any contact with a rattlesnake.

Antivenin was started and improvement was rapid!

Bottom line... Never handle a dead rattlesnake that didn't have the head removed at the time of death! The venom can spread through the skin and be absorbed through your skin!

Who knew? We always cut the head off to kill them and never dreamed handling a dead snake could be deadly.

Sounds like you have some cool dogs.

Water moccasins are just mean. They're the only snake that actually seem to want to hurt you. I've seen them in trees while fishing just drop down into your boat and get hostile. And I've heard stories from some old fisherman on Lake Caddo that moccasins will actually chase your boat if threatened.

Was bitten by a ball python a few years ago. I knew that pythons were constrictors and not venomous so I didn't go to the doc. The bite was on my underside of my right ringer finger. The holes left were small and it all happened soooo fast. But the pain was way more intense then I could have expected. The pain actually lasted almost 2 weeks. I think the fang caught the tendon running down my finger and maybe knicked it? Idk but I could barely more my finger for about 2 weeks until it finally started to subside.

The Python was relatively small only about 14 inches long, considering how big they could get I guess I was lucky.

Prob not the snake bite story you were looking for but its the only one I have and wanted to post it just in case

Also, here's a GREAT rhyme to remember about coral snakes

"If red touches black, your ok jack. If red touches yellow, your a dead fellow"

Some snakes mimic the colors of a coral snake. So if you encounter or are bitten by what you think is a coral snake, remember the rhyme. Could save you life!

Very true about the rhyme. I remember it growing up!

And I had a western hog nose for a pet as a kid and his bites hurt like hell too. Any snake bite is no joke, just like your python story. Their mouths tend to be pretty nasty and full of bacteria also.

Thanks for dropping (slithering*) by and posting!

Re: Snake Bite Stories
When I was a kid I was always catching snakes to keep as pets even though every time my father found out I would catch an @ss whipping from hell. One day I caught 2 ground rattlers and had put them in a empty fish tank we had in a cabon (cabon=shed, Im from Louisiana.Thats what we call a shed) My father said he was gonna go look for something in there and I slipped off to go remove the snakes before my father found them.Well I grabbed both of them and just when I bent down to drop them in the long grass, one of the lil shits bite me.I went told my mother and of course all hell breaks loose as she panics.I get taken to the ER and my parents are going ballistic. The ER doctor tells me he notices how calm I am and that Im smart for not panicking.I tell him I'm not worried bout the snake bite,I'm worried about getting a whippin when I get home. The doctor & nurses all bust out laughing.I got a lil sick from the bite but nothing major.I have also been bitten by a couple chicken snakes and grass snakes over the years.

Another story I have is my brother is extremely scared of snakes. One day I caught a chicken snake and was chasing him around the yard.As I was chasing him it bite me.Well a couple days later he is chasing me with a big banana spider and it bites him.I'm not scared of snakes but I am terrified of any kind of spider.

Whoever said that water moccasins are mean is correct. Most snakes will try and flee but a moccasin will actually go after you rather than slither away.Had them come at me when we would go froggin at night.

I actually found that out after I got him. My dad bought it for me at an exotic ship when I was about six. It snagged my thumb a few weeks later and it's saliva made it go numb. But the fangs were too far back for it to ever get me with those. I still don't understand how my parents thought THAT breed of snake was a good idea for a kid, but it certainly was gorgeous

Re: Snake Bite Stories
Both my stories are from Lake County Florida. At a school years end Lake party. I watched in HORROR as a big water moccasin headed straight for my oblivious 5 years old son who was playing in the lake shallows. It took one of the dad's at the school picnic to throw a rake right at it to have it swerve course. It was heading straight for my child with intent - believe me.

Scary!!! Just a hour before most all of the kids had been in that water and had that snake gone after one of those kids then it most likely would have succeeded.

Second crazy story happened years earlier - I worked at a Golf Course and one of our regulars got bit by a rattler during play - and the freak finished his golf game, he was an old Florida Cracker boy. He had two big hole marks on his calf that never went away. They also found a rattle snake curled up at the back of a stall in the ladies room one time.

The first story, about my son - it freaked me out so bad, riled up my Veteran PTSD so bad (I am a mom, with combat PTSD) that the ruminating made me so crazy I called the Veterans Hot line later that night just to calm down. It was awful. I don't ever want to feel that helpless and see a thing like that ever again.

But I will tell you a story a real story.
A boy got bitten by a king brown snake, he was in a spa at a place called Eeldon, its kind of a camping holiday resort.
Anyway it jumped into the spa bit him multiple times.
He was 9 years old he died while his parents were speeding him to hospital.
His liver exploded.
He was just to far away from a hospital.
Now they have anti venom in a medical center at that resort.

Anyway it jumped into the spa bit him multiple times.
He was 9 years old he died while his parents were speeding him to hospital.
His liver exploded.
He was just to far away from a hospital.
Now they have anti venom in a medical center at that resort.

SO sad and horrifying and probably an awful painful way to go. :-(

Was a very isolated incident, one that made the news.
A very large adult male brown snake, gave that kid a hefty belt of venom several times.
When it got into the spa he kept trying to fight it off and it bit him more.
I can't even imagine how those parents would feel I have 2 kids myself at the time I was young didn't think about it much.
Just a bad sequence of events ambulance was screaming towards them at top speed 200 kmh just couldn't get there quick enough.

Yes it happens, freak things. Even bees can kill you. Sadly it seems these things are not spread out the right way though - you have despicable people that seem to go on and on untouched - and then you have kids that die on vacation. Its not fair.

Re: Snake Bite Stories
When my husband was young , he had a little dog that got bit by a timber back rattler. He said the dog's head swelled up as big as a basketball. His grandfather went to the creek and gathered jewelweed, boiled the roots in milk, dog drank it and the next day the dog was back to normal.

Re: Snake Bite Stories
Not a snake, but has anyone here ever been stung by a velvet ant (aka 'cow ant')?

I got bite by one when I was about nine.My hand swoll up three times the size of my regular hand. When it stung me if felt like someone hammering a railroad spike into my hand.I eneded up at ER due to me being damn near allergic to anything that stings. This happened when i was around 9 and Im 41 now and I can still remember the pain of that sting to this very day.
