yes - Wilbur Smith - Rivergod follow that with the Seventh Scroll
and then be astounded by reading the rest of his literature

another totally astonishing book is one called 'Inca gold' by Clive Cussler [Wilbur Smith reads Clive Cussler himself!]

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one of my Favs.

Its about a Libertarian Revolution by the future population of the Moon.

They hold earth hostage with Moon based weaponry. IE: threatening to rain rocks down upon the planet.

Dan Simmons' "The Terror." About British ships searching or the Northwest Passage in the late 1800's. Add a dash of the paranormal to the human emotion and there you go.

James Ellroy is a favorite author of mine. Lots of history to go with the drama and conspiracy. From Black Dalhia murder, thru JFK, Howard Hughes, Hollywood and LA won't get any better noir anywhere.
