Just had a random thought....is this the secret of alchemy?
Not physically turning something into gold, but making a "priceless" commodity out of a seemingly valueless product.

Possible examples for theory: silk (china), Tulips (dutch), spices, oil, the virtual stock market, etc.

This would make alchemy more a form of social manipulation through supply and demand for those who "know" how to do it, rather than the age-old myth of being able to turn things into gold.

just a random thought I had, but what say you?

Yup, another good example. Making the current people that control the world and media the masters of alchemy.

It's amazing how often studying sociology comes in handy.

Re: Just had a random thought....is this the secret of alchemy?
Good random thought, and great thread, but the secret of alchemy is the perfection of yourself...

In chemistry, vitriol is iron or copper sulfate salts and their derivative, sulfuric acid. The name comes from the Latin for “glassy,” after the resemblance of iron sulfate to shards of green glass. Vitriol is symbolized alchemically as the “green lion,” a poisonous substance that appears when metal is degraded by acid. Sulfuric acid, or oil of vitriol, was used in the synthesis of the lapis philosophorum- the Philosopher’s Stone. One unique peoperty of sulfuric acid is the dissolution of metals- all except for gold, on which it has no effect.

The alchemical motto for vitriol is “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem,” “Visit the interior of the earth and rectifying (purifying) you will find the hidden stone.” The motto originated in L’Azoth des Philosophes by the 15th Century alchemist Basilius Valentinus.

Interesting, thanks. I actually don't know much about alchemy or its history.

But just from my brief experience thinking about it, it seems the most successful "alchemists" would be the ones that perfected the art of finding the strings that control society (the interior) and learning how to manipulate/ control it (the gem).

I'm just thinking about all of it from a different pov. One that wouldn't involve any type of classic alchemy (chemestry, science, etc), but more from a social control side. I do really appreciate your post nonetheless.

O, it is not. You said yourself - vitriol was used to separate base metals from gold.

Thank you! Your comment is fascinating though, as the philosopher's stone seems to be a central theme in alchemy. The thinker's stone...

Re: Just had a random thought....is this the secret of alchemy?
Well, marketing is how it's all done, so that makes sense if everyone is controlled by money.

I had a random thought about alchemy the other day....

I was going to the bathroom and I could not believe how much I was peeing... so I got to thinking - maybe I'm a water elemental.

You know how trees produce gasses, and cows methane - well, every living thing must be producing something, it's just that we aknowledge very little in in these terms other than forests and cattle.

So man could be a producer of water for his alchemical ability.

So maybe the secret to alchemy is to produce other than our natural inclination to produce into something desired; by knowledge and teachings of other lifeforms and have command over our natural products through alchemical study.

Otherwise we flood the earth with our own water product.

Alchemy is both perfection of physical and spiritual.

Not being of one particular method rather all into one.

Much of alchemy and the occult is simply code and not meant to be taken literally, at least not by those meant to read it.

As above so below.
