Man reunited with his missing dog after 8 years

I had a chocolate lab when I was a teen. I was walking in the neighborhood one day and saw this kid beating the dog -- who he had tied up to a post. One thing led to another and this kids mother called the cops and when the cops shows up, they side with me and next thing you know, it was agreed that the dog was mine. Took her home and she was the best dog you could ever have.

She was 8 or so years old when I moved out of the country. 7 years later, I come back to the USA for the first time and my dog was still around... just barely. She was clearly having a lot of difficulty getting around but at the same time, still enjoying life.

When I got home she did not know who I was... for the first couple of days she would come in the house and go right past me and on to someone else she knew.

Then one afternoon I was sitting in the living room and she was laying on the floor in front of me... and she yawned. When she was a puppy and still remembered me, one of the things I would do when she yawned is act like I was going to put my foot in her mouth... just as a way to play with her.

So I did it again... I acted like I was going to put my foot in her mouth and she looked at me, her tail started to wag, and this old dog who could barely moved jumped off the floor like a puppy.

After that, she would not leave me alone... back to being my best friend. I think I spent more time on the floor over the next couple of weeks than I had my entire life so that I could spend time with her and not see her in pain trying to spend time with me... if that makes sense.

She died a few weeks later.

So I do think that dogs can remember... might take something to trigger their memory, but it is still there.

I bet Duke has some unbelievably awful breath!

Yeah, every time I came home from the hospital my dog seemed like she didn't know me until she sniffed me and then she went crazy!

Rotts are incredible dogs...they are very affectionate and intelligent.

People underestimate them

Dogs rely way more on their sense of smell than their eyes.

I wouldn't expect Duke to visually remember this guy after 8 years...but he definitely recognized him through smell

So where was Duke the past 8 years?

Was he in someone else's home?

Yet someone decided to check him for a microchip?

The video didn't get me verklempt. That comment did, however. I agree.

This was one of the quirks of my last one, a cross rott/dobie superior specimen of dog, she would bury her shit. Dig, dump, bury. Spent a lot of time with the catz.

It's beautiful things like this which even if I try I can't help but shed a tear.

He was abandoned or got loose a second time. It happens.
