Very true OP, mechanization is getting cheaper so if human labor goes UP it's a no brainer. The trend has been in place in better paying skilled manufacturing jobs for decades now so if you give the corporations enough of an incentive to roboticize more mundane tasks the outcome is a given.

Meh I think you are underestimating the money and assets these companies have. They also like the optics of having employees as of now.

I’m a business owner who can not afford to pay somebody $15 an hour. But I wouldn’t want to pay anybody less than that because I’m not a piece of shit so until we can; my wife and I will do all the work.
It is a CHOICE what you pay people and a CHOICE to raise prices. They have tons of assets/property and can make cuts in other places if they WANTED to. But that’s the nature of the corporation. They are legally bound to maximize profit. They have brainwashed you to think that they “have no choice” and it is “automatic” that prices will rise, all small business will go out of business, and that they have no choice. It’s total bullshit.

At the end of the day, I choose my prices. The market guides me in this decisions but it is my choice. And some things sell for prices you wouldn’t expect. Consumers can sometimes have a strange psychology as far as prices and their perception of things that are almost counterintuitive. For example, sometimes people in our business go through the entire pricing cycle (start off at a kind of higher price then drop it drop it drop it until it sells) but we start that cycle over after it bottoms out and doesn’t sell. Then sometimes if you relist an item for a much higher price it you tried before - many are interested and it immediately sells. I’m sure there are lots of reasons for this like it is perceived as cheaply made or fake if it is a designer brand and you drop the price too low.

Anyway

Those who are against a higher minimum wage, please consider that you are paying much more thru taxes to subsidize the housing, food, and general living for these low wage workers than just paying these fuckers a decent wage or paying a couple bucks more for a hamburger. They have brainwashed you to think this is the way it has to be so they can have you pay part their “real” wages and living expenses so they profit more.

Also, the people that say well I worked hard to get $15 an hour and I deserve it. Don’t give it to them because then I will be equal to them! No you won’t. Your current job at $15 will have to increase your wage to keep you around. Otherwise, you would just sack groceries.

And pro-tip: anybody out there who wants a cushy job....right before the $15 is about to pass or be implemented I would suggest you get something like sacker and work there for 6 months to a year. It won’t last long as purchasing power and everything will get fucked up- most things will adjust so you probably even won’t be making that much more but it’ll be worth it and awesome for a while. Total slacker 420 shit.

But yes this is a complex issue and I wish people would try to think of things more analytically and takes things into consideration that they normally dismiss out of hand because that is what their party or ideology has taught them they are supposed to believe.

People that work a full time job should be able to at minimum have their NEEDS taken care of and if they WANT more they can go do something else.

It’s not right. Nobody appreciates the people who do shit jobs but if there was no janitor at your building the CEO would be swimming in shit! Your value as a human being and to a company is more than what they are willing to pay and what you actually earn. Money and status should not define people. We need to start appreciating honest work whether the system values it or not

And I think we are further off from full automation than people think. They want you to think that so they can continue to have an excuse to depress wages and profit.
