I love math. I was really good at it in high school and college. I could do derivative problems that took up an entire page or two per problem. I always loved math because there IS in fact a correct answer. You just have to know how to find it. This is where the problem comes in for most people. If you forget a formula or a rule along the way, or you failed to grasp something in the first place, there's no way around it. You can't move forward. You have to go back to that place of failure and start over.

There are two times in my life where that almost happened. One was 2nd grade. I had chicken pox and was out of school for two weeks. I missed the lesson on how to multiply. When I got back to school, I had NO idea what the teacher was talking about. The second time was in 6th or 7th grade. I was out sick for a couple of weeks and missed the lesson on negative integers. I was beyond lost when I returned.

I have no idea how I got back on track, but I'm lucky I did. I know first hand how easy it is to fall through the cracks in math.

I use the same side of my brain as you do. I'm a writer who literally tested out of every grammar class, and A+'d every paper I've ever written. I also wrote all my girlfriend's college essays, and she got A+'s on those, even Women's Studies..

I hated math with a severe passion. Hate, hated, math hate! I equated math with grammar for English - NOT NEEDED TO CREATE. Math to an artist is like requiring tangents and radius degrees on a brush stroke to paint an arc on a tree branch. Painters don't need to map out each brush stroke to create.

I bought the book for my college course and read the whole thing before I took the course. I learned to love math the same as I could love an essay structure; topic, supporting, conclusion. Each equation was a story. Once I viewed each equation as a story, the logic of balance gave me the intellectual squirt of creative energy that I needed to pass the course, and to love math as a dummy's way to map the creative brushstrokes of a painter. Algebra is karma, yin and yang .

I have a friend that knows a guy who used to be roommates with this chick who has an uncle that swears he saw GM once while hiking in the Calahara desert.
