Re: America -Then vs Now. It’s Almost Unbelievable
Good read:

[snip - less than 50%]

Newsweek magazine, on December 27, 1982, in an article entitled, How the Bible Made America, made this revealing
statement, “historians are discovering that the Bible, perhaps even more than the Constitution, is our Founding
document.”

To understand the core values of a nation, one must simply look to the beliefs set forth during its conception, and, in the
case of America, during the transitional years of the American Revolution. Judge for yourself how far we have drifted from
the original intent of early Americans. Consider the following:

Then: If a proposed article for the Constitution was not supported by, or rooted in the Bible, it was not considered. In their
early writings, many of the Founding Fathers quoted or referenced the Bible nearly four times more than any other source.

Now: The Bible is mocked, ridiculed, and discarded.

Then: First introduced in 1766, William Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws, served as the legal reference for the
Founders, as well as for many early American lawyers. Blackstone’s commentaries were deeply rooted in biblical principles.
It’s been said that Blackstone was the first to use the phrase, “the laws of nature and of nature’s God.”

Now: “It is unconstitutional for students to see the Ten Commandments since they might read, meditate upon, respect, or
obey them.” Stone v. Graham, 449 U.S. 39 (1980).

Unfortunately those who read this who already appose any type of biblical teachings, will just be more motivated to destroy our god given constitution...gasp

The founding fathers might have used Christian morality as the basis for their system of government, but they also did their best to make sure that said morality couldn't be imposed from above. Thus while they desired a government based on Christian principles, they also wanted one free from religious entanglements. Clearly, they understood the concept of "grey area" in human affairs. Something neither the religious or the non-religious seem to see anymore.

Thank "god" man has evolved and became more intelligent. Intelligent enough to cast off the chains of religion. Our Constitution is secular and the product of the Enlightenment; not holy script (which retards and debilitates the mind).

Yes. I do. (At least in regards to religion). Are the American people the dumbest on earth? Yes. Easily groomed, conditioned and brainwashed to accept the next foreign engagement/incursion.

I've been around a long time, and dumb Americans are a recent development. Trust me when I tell you that the dumbing-down of America was not an agenda initiated by Christians.

You can say bible bible till you turn blure in the face but ultimately it's going to be interpreted by mortal man. And then corruption, war and crime will set in. Oh that's right ....it has. I'm an atheist so I have no agenda to promote or protect any "holy book" whatsoever. To me it is all bullshit. Literally. But that's another topic of discussion.

Let me say this though -- America was founded on Christian principals. There is no denying that those very principals made America the greatest country to ever exist and as America slowly loses her Christian principals, we can see the result -- this is a sinking ship, fast.

Those who forget where they came from soon find out how fast their end comes.

I'm not promoting atheism as that is a personal choice and I believe humans have not evolved far enough to accept the truth that there is no god, which is why we must maintain our Christian heritage.

I'll tell you this right now. America truly used to be #1, but it's not #1 any longer. It has slid horribly downhill and is unrecognizable from what it used to be. Maybe you're too young to have ever known any better.

Re: America -Then vs Now. It’s Almost Unbelievable
The Founders drew on the Bible and believed that Christianity was necessary for civil morality in a republican system.

It doesn't follow, however, that they believed Christianity should be imposed through law. The First Amendment is very clear - indeed, is even clearer in its first draft. Government shall make no laws respecting the establishment of religion.

Yes, freedom of religion doesn't mean freedom from religion. No one is arguing that it means that. But it does mean that government will not impose religion through law, including through laws governing public school.

Why is this important? For one reason, a reason that all Christians can accept, it prevents one sect of Christianity from gaining dominance over any others. It's easy for Christians to say that America should make laws based on the Bible against atheists or Muslims. But let's say we do: which Christianity do we use? Baptist? Unitarian? Catholic? "Nondenominational"? Calvinist? Lutheran? Should schools teach that Christ was a human, a god, or both man and God? Should schools teach pre-trib or post-trib? Etc.

Now part of the confusion here arises from the fact that the Bible used to be taught in schools. But the schools in which it was taught were state-run schools. States weren't originally bound to the Constitution, and so if their state constitution permitting teaching the Bible, they could do so. But with the steady imposition of the federal constitution on the states, the first amendment has come to apply within the states. Furthermore, the federalization of schools and required the imposition of the first amendment on state schools. So while state schools could teach the bible previously, they find it increasingly hard to do so now.

The answer is obvious: free up the education system, and then the freedom of atheists like myself is respected (my children won't be forced to learned Christianity at the point of government's gun), and Christians will be free to teach their children whatever brand of Christianity they prefer.

The founders never told anyone that the bible was not the basis for the founding documents. They mentioned God often in all their writings. They worked hard to assure the religious freedom for all American. The freedom of religion they wanted was to keep the government out of religion, not to keep religion out of government. They knew that a government without religion would be corrupt. Amazing how they could see the future.

The thing that makes me LOL about all this religious crap on this thread is they IGNORE the very fact that brought the founding fathers to this land, it was 'religious' rule they were fleeing. Freedom FROM religion was as important to them as their Christianity.
The other hysterical thing here is that the very posters on this thread will turn and vote for republicans at every election, barr none! As though the very fact they are republican makes them 'righteous' in their mind. Actually if they look around these are the anti-Christians.

The piece that many people miss, most purposefully, if that the Judeo-Christian moral framework was just that: a moral framework. Small minded people contend that one must either accept every word of the bible literally or discard it completely. Wiser men see it for what it is...the wisdom of the ages told in parable; mixed with legend, propaganda, and allegory from various times in our history, that provides a path for men to live side by side in relative peace.

The Bible is probably the most important document in the Western world, and is in fact the underpinnings of our society whether one is able to accept that or not.

Personally I don't believe in "God", but I do believe in the value of the 10 commandments and the basis of Judeo-Christian values and ethics.
