Dozens Of Scientific Papers Withdrawn After Peer-Review Fraud Uncovered | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 67476524 United States 05/01/2015 09:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | While the politics and cronyism was evident, there was still pride and integrity. The pride was often false--she would take on a younger researcher's work like a mad dog. But academia still held dear these traditions of peer review. No doubt medical research has been for sale, but counterfeited peer review is morally bankrupt. It looks like money and greed has corrupted every last thing. |

Just like everything else, they steal or knock off other peoples hard work. They take legitimate peer reviewed journals, change some key indicators around (like the name of a gene) then submit to another journal. During the revision process, they offer to put more names on the paper for a price. According to the SA article, American and/or British researchers are still doing original legitimate research. Take that how you will, but that's what the article said. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 59922783 China 05/01/2015 10:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This must be the pay to play online journals, whereby the author pays to get published. These journals act like there is some scientific rigor, but how can there be when the author themselves pays the "publisher" and recommends the peer-reviewers? It seems to be modeled a bit like self-publishing. This is not the standard with real scoentific journals. They have their own independent list of reviewers and the reviews are anonymous, generally one way (authors don't know who is reviewing them.) Obviously there is still much bias because the reviewers know not only who they are reviewing but also grant info, like who funded them and for how much. I'm sure this overt bias plays into who gets published. A few journals have a mutual anonymity, but not many. I have a sneaky suspicion that if the entire process were completely anonymous, including the results of the studies (there is a bias against negative results,) science progress would take HUGE leaps forward. |

This makes sense. The scientific culture allows for researchers in Asian countries, particularly China, to cheat with impunity to get ahead. It's the way they do it. One plumber will have a license to do plumbing etc. then decide to do brokering (without a license); drag in off the street, young upsatart, wanna-be-plumbers (unlicensed), that work for state minimum, to broker out to your house to work on your plumbing, gas furnace etc. These are those that blow up houses after they leave and have "worked" on a gas furnace. |

Insight from Martin Armstrong I attended the dinner in Washington that was a political bash. I went with my friend Dick Fox who was Chairman of Temple University at that time. The person in charge of seating put the two of us at the table with the environmental group heads. They assumed we were with a university and spoke freely. The conversation was frank and it was all about how to use the environmental movement to reduce population. They fought for wetlands to stop construction. We listened to this revelation and Dick egged them on pretending to be on their side. They even want harsh prison terms for minorities to stop them from have children. Dick finally asked them – Whose grandchild are you trying to prevent from being born? Your’s or mine? The farce was then up. There is a difference from wanting a clean environment and using this as a tool for a hidden agenda. It is no different from taxing the rich that ends up as always the middle class while they borrow from the poor and do not even pay them interest with their annual tax refund. Nevertheless, it is likely to remain central to science and journals because there is no obvious alternative, and scientists and editors have a continuing belief in peer review. How odd that science should be rooted in belief." |

Do you think even the base idea that we find something and name it after ourselves, rather than a poet would name something, or one who was humbled and mystified before the majesty and wonder of the Cosmos? There's much to be said about humility and knowledge. The most brilliant men I've worked for are also some of the most humble. |
