Re: Disco Flashback! Get Up and Dance..
(sigh) Most of the stuff posted so far are things that were beaten to death on the radio. In fact, even the clubs started getting lazy in the mid-80s.

I took a trip to NYC in 1985 - went to the Palladium, which was supposedly one of the hot clubs at the time. It was run by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager of Studio 54 fame. According to the material in Wikipedia ( [link to en.wikipedia.org] ) it was supposed to play new wave, Euro and house music.

Guess what I heard all night? The same crappy pop and "dance" music I head on the radio in my backwoods town.

I went to NYC's top club to hear Shannon's "Let the Music Play"? Really, DJs? REALLY? Big, BIG disappointment.

The problem was - the public is basically lazy. It was illustrated by a letter a DJ wrote in the industry newsletter Dance Music Report in the early '80s (I used to subscribe just to keep up on what new was coming out so I could buy it for myself). She said that every time she tried to break out a new song, people would come up to her and whine "can't you play something we know"? She said that people are basically insecure, and cannot trust their own taste and judgement. They needed radio to reassure them that it was OK to like something - that TPTB in the music industry gave their stamp of approval.

I even learned that myself. When Michael Jackson's Thriller was released in Oct/Nov 1982, the first single off it was "The Girl Is Mine", followed by "Billie Jean" in Jan '83. I used to play for my friends the title cut, and they were like "nah". Not the least bit interested.

Five singles later and finally "Thriller" was promoted as a single in Nov '83 - a year after the album was released. And these same people I initially played it for were now all excited about it. I asked them "why do you like it now and not when I first played it for you"? No response. They couldn't answer. They just all looked like mindless sheep.

The answer: programming in action. None could think for themselves. They were just told "Now here is a song you are all supposed to like". And so they did. Like robots.

And it's gotten worse with society in the past 30 years.

Anyway, here is some REAL Disco and dance music! From a person who lived through the time and the scene.

You people crack me up. Disco was killed in a baseball field in 1979. That's why I started posting new wave music after 1979. Video killed the radio star.

No - what killed Disco was that many of the people in the clubs around America were not heavy drinkers. While there was some drinking and some drugs, the majority of the serious dancers did not.

Even with high cover charges the clubs could not make money. Needing to succeed financially they turned back to the more heavier rock sound, as they knew that that crowd loved their alcohol.

And THAT is what killed Disco.

I'm guessin' you missed this, Derp:

I remember this. I was in high school. The white chicks all of a sudden stopped listening to disco, overnight. THAT is what killed Disco. How old were you in 1979?
