how many people work for companies which measure how "engaged" you are at work?
Or they think this is a solution. ....having more "engaged" workers is a way for better retention?

FML.

whatever happened to let me do my job, get me the resources I need to do it, and compensate me well for results?

Fuck this namby pamby pansy BS.
first time I heard this shit, I didn't know wtf people were talking about.

This is some diversity PC BS coming from the HR department or their consultants, I guess, but c level execs are concerned about employee scores on being "engaged."

Wtf....yet another thing which notches down productivity while people go to meeting on the topic, discuss it, create questionnaires on it, send them out, people hv to fill them out, they are tallied and then endless discussion ensues

Meanwhile a good consultant or team can come in and assess the environment and give you feedback which those fucking surveys never will...like you have an Indian mafia in here, they are all CYAing for another, they take other people's ideas as their own as they freeze people out of meetings they should be attending, all in the name of their own job security and not what is best for the company. .....just an example.
those are answers you will never see on a freaking "engaged" survey.

I hope more mission focused employment won't hv all this irrelevant BS.

My profession is in technology, too.

I just got a LinkedIn alumni discussion notification from the last consulting company where I worked - big 5 - re: "engaged" employees from some Indian douchebag, saying an engaged xyz workforce may be the solution to IT disruptions, says the woman, a principal at the firm, who is now the leader of xyz services group.

LOL

Ahahahhhhhaaaaahhhhhhaahaha

*gasp*

Like sales of services are gonna go up with that human capital BS.

Must be a fucking slow ass train wreck in motion, wld hv thought it wld have been faster.

Anyhoo....fucking happy not to be there now.

Yeah, wld do that if I wasn't in the position of having to inflict this BS on my own staff and be in meetings where this shit was discussed seriously. i wanted to just stand up and say wtf....you gotta be fucking kidding me, right?

Currently, not in a position to be in a position and when I am again I will be looking for mission focused work.

The problem is the C-level managers. Once they realize this, if ever, problem solved!

I cannot say that is a truism at all....I've known some great c-level execs and hv been downstream from some less than stellar, from my perception anyway, ones as well....my first mgmnt job was when I was 25, and so I don't want to be all armchair quarterback like, but some don't (seem to?) care about their staff, I call those ones REMFs, even in the civilian world.

some problems are in-house work mafias....this I hv seen only with minorities.

some orgs are just siloed and the middle mgmnt is turf crazy ... couple that with not being in a right to work state or other employment guarantees and NIGHTMARE!

some orgs insource and or outsource badly.

if i won the lottery I'd start my own businesses with products and software already designed in my head. I don't hv VC connections....my brother knows people like that but different arena...and he's too much my big brother to think I know anything anyway. Haha.

I have not heard of this before. And no, my company is not into this, don't need to be since they keep everyone way too busy that there's no chance anyone is feeling unengaged with their job.

Well, engaged is about more than working and being busy (actually I think it has nothing really to do with those things), it is about how you FEEL ... about how you are treated, how you like your job, how you like your boss (stupid as often good bosses are not always well liked), how you like your entire chain of command, is your voice heard, do you feel discriminated against or maligned or whatever, how you like the company, if you understand what the company does, do you know the company's targets or mission, do you know how your position fits in with the rest of the company, blah blah blah ..... probably missing big things bc I thought this was a supreme waste of time when 12 plus hour days w/o counting bberry time at home was not enough time to even read all or respond to all my email let alone get headway on projects for needed improvements. I was beyond stressed, so were the hard workers on my team and people want me to think about this shit? So, mgmnt above me has good numbers?

Now I see it rear it's head in the consulting world?

I mean this place had deficiencies alright bc they allowed the minority work mafia to decide who to lay off and who to keep....middle mgmnt was the problem to people being disengaged.

You're not engaged enough shill, your shill work is lacking.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35166950

If you think this is shilling or that I'm a shill you are incredibly wrong.

I don't like the whole work mafia thing or engaged business, it is a decent company in many ways. My profession isn't shilling...I never knew what that was until i started inferring what it meant by seeing it here on glp.

Yes, my employer is wasting money on this bs now. Losing credibility by the day.... Consultants whose main skill consists of excel spread sheets and power point slide deck presentations rehash the work they did for the last client and charge $175 per hour...scope and approach, project milestones, implementation plan, communication plan, metrics, hogwash. Meeting after meeting on the importance of employee recognition (Nice work, Sally!), innovation (Great idea, Lance!), diversity (Our differences are our strengths!), inclusion (T.E.A.M Together Everyone Achieves More!), going green (Remeber to power down before going home! And use that recycle bin!) Not to mention they actually believe in global warming excuse me climate change. So much political correctness I could barf.

I have learned the importance of sprinkling my vocabulary with the phrase of the month, and to always document my 'staff recognition' in emails (Let's all give Sally a big thank you for her important contribution to our sunshine club event!), and to properly space my deliverables lest I offend a lesser-skilled but higher ranking manager. What a crock.

Yeah, that sounds like a horror of a consulting job....know big firms have methodologies, so these hopefully tried and successful deliverables are re-used, yet customized to each client and in my consulting we were always told to improve on everything we did, so that our deliverables constantly were being improved upon for new clients, and high level project phases are typical like....design, build, implement, review, post deployment operations / support, continuous improvement
...most companies might change something but the typical, iirc, is like 5 major areas with numerous dependencies and milestones. Haven't run a big project in a few years with all the lovely obama unemployment I experienced....then I had a staff job for awhile which had me on the other side of the table. Honestly, I love consulting work bc I like to solve problems / first things / innovate.

Sounds like you hv human capital (hr) consulting in there as well......with the staff recognition and other things you mentoned.

For $175 you must be fed, mil, state, local, or ed....or hv a smaller consulting company doing the work. Fed, govt, mil, ed get good discounts. My hourly rate was @$425 iirc, but I didn't see that, I hv made $135 (commercial) with no benefits and $90 (fed) with some benefits (health insurance) when I was consulting on my own....making more than I did working for a big 5 firm...I did earn it though, busted my ass on the first one and the second one was fubar managed and just weird.

I know exactly how you feel.

Job recruiter questions who have no idea who i am are like "how do you stay engaged at work?"

wtf? i dunno, red bull?

i got passed over for a 10k promotion because of affirmative action and the guy is a clown.

celebrate PC bullshit and diversity yay! :D
