Gerald Ford gets a pacemaker

(Los Angeles-AP, August 21, 2006) - Former President Ford underwent a procedure to have a pacemaker inserted on Monday.
The announcement came late Monday afternoon, a few days after he was admitted to a hospital for testing.

The full statement form President Ford's office reads,

"Former President Gerald R. Ford has completed an evaluation and series of tests resulting in the implantation of a cardiac pacemaker to enhance his heart's performance.

"The procedure this afternoon went smoothly and without incident. President Ford is resting comfortably with his wife and children and is expected to continue his recuperation at Mayo Clinic for the next several days."

He was admitted Aug. 15 for tests and evaluation. At the time, neither the clinic nor his chief of staff would comment in detail on his condition.

Ford is 93-years-old.

Ford spent a few days in Colorado's Vail Valley Medical Center last month because of shortness of breath. In January, he was hospitalized for 12 days in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to treat pneumonia. Five years ago, Ford suffered two small strokes and spent about a week in a hospital.

Ford became the nation's oldest living former president after the death of Ronald Reagan in 2004.
